Wow. Where do I begin. Not good.
scottmichael-593-9682576 October 2013
Plot - weak, poorly planned, full of holes and questions, and well, kinda dumb.

Acting - Not one of Dominic Purcell's best moments. Best actor of the film was the young daughter. Brendan Frasier is just a poor actor to begin with so casting him in an action/thriller is a recipe for a lot of good jokes and unbelievable acting. Its really bad actually. His panic'd yelling is really humorous. Like scared little girl meets Encino man.

Setting was the only plus to this movie. Some great scenery if you like nature. That's about all.

Tons of mistakes but OK small budget movie
Anhaley775 October 2013
I think the storyline of the movie was decent, but there were so many mistakes it's impossible to list them all. To name a few: they were not smart with the windows. You can see cameramen in the cabin windows toward the end of the scene in the cabin. There are also LOTS of missed opportunities - one being that the good guy leaves a rifle with the bad guy after fighting with him. The guns seem to have endless ammo, they run instead of utilizing vehicles, and they seem to all be able to find each other in the woods remarkably well - too well.

I'm giving it a 5 out of 10, because it's decent enough. Just don't watch it if you're one to really pick movies apart. You won't enjoy it.

Just finished watching this movie. The few written reviews this movie has received so far are a little on the harsh side. Although this was not a great movie it certainly was not a bad movie either. It was stuck someone in the middle. I really loved how this movie is set in Ontario, Canada. I am from Ontario myself and so it is refreshing to see movies from home so to speak. The idea behind this movie is solid enough the acting was a bit weak even for a big star like Brandon. I would say the best acting was from Dominic Purcell who is best known for his role in Prison Break.

I rated this movie an 5 out of a possible 10. I was not bad but it also was not that good good either.

Run... from this Awful Thriller
claudio_carvalho17 September 2013
Warning: Spoilers
The environmentalist Jack Damson (Brendan Fraser) accidentally kills a man during a protest in the woods and is imprisoned. Years later, his former wife and lawyer Maria (Amy Price-Francis) now is living with their daughter Jenny (Holly Deveaux) and their son Mikey (Christian Martyn) with Jack's friend Chuck (Daniel Kash). Chuck invites Jenny and Mikey to go camping in the woods.

Meanwhile the psychopath Tommy Baxter (Dominic Purcell) travels with his retarded brother Kenny (Ethan Suplee) to a cabin in the same forest and Tommy kills the owner. However Jenny and Mikey witness the murder and Tommy hunts them. Jenny loses her cellular and Kenny calls Maria believing that she is his mother. Maria tells Jack what is happening and he breaks out of prison to rescue the siblings from the criminals. Will Jack succeed in his intent?

"Breakout" is an awful thriller with a lame and stupid story full of clichés and terrible screenplay. There are many so many holes and stupid situations that it is difficult to list all of them. For example: (a) Jenny and Mikey sleep in the woods like angels while the psychopath is chasing them. (b) Everybody is stranded in the same point of the woods. (c) Jack easily finds Chuck and instead of the wounded guy drives his car out of the forest to call the police, he walks with Jack without a gun and slowing down his friend. (d) Jack easily finds his kids since he knows the forest, but he never brings them back to Maria's car. (e) Tommy misses all his shots except the one that kills the ranger. (f) Jack stabs Tommy on his hand but he never throws away the rifle in the river or brings the weapon with him. (g) Maria has successive contacts with Kenny, but she never goes to the police to report exactly what is happening in the woods. (h) The environmental problem is just a pretext to put Jack in prison and is totally forgotten. My vote is two.

Title (Brazil): "A Caça" ("The Hunting")

Stupid
jwhiteboca21 September 2013
Stupid goofs and situations, there are too many to list. This is a good example of an extreme waste of production funds. Since the director wrote it he clearly was blind to the numerous mistakes and nonsense situations. The bad guy is the worst shot on the planet. And the good guy kept shooting at a distant target with a sawed off shotgun. The topper was when the good guy fights with the bad guy and does not take his rifle from him and then runs away to continue the chase. I think the actors are not to blame as much as the director and writer. I think if the people responsible for this movie every want to work again they are going to have to change their names.

an insult to my intelligence
WatchedAllMovies14 November 2013
Warning: Spoilers
After watching half the movie, I decided not to allow the movie to insult me any further and stopped watching.

What's wrong with this movie: (1) normal people who sees a gunman killing people would call the police. In this movie, nobody does.

(2) if you knock down an opponent with a weapon, take the weapon from the opponent and make sure he doesn't gets up. In this movie, when the good guy knocks down the opponent, he runs without doing any of the above.

(3) if you have a rifle with a scope, you hide, take good aim and snipe at your opponent. In this movie, the guy with the rifle stands in the open, shoots without aiming and misses.

(4) if someone with a scoped rifle is hunting you, you try to stay hidden. In this movie, the good guys hop into a canoe, paddle in the river with clear view from surrounding areas and make themselves easy targets.

A bad movie is one thing, a movie made to insult my intelligence deserves a low rating.

As they said in the movie, RUN!!! (as far away from this movie...)
tnadasdi21 August 2017
From the beginning, movie made no sense. There was no connection from the flashback introduction to the main story, chasing kids in the woods, running in circles (really they seemed to run in circles for 3 days) to try to get away and too many holes to fill in the movie. (why were the 2 brothers running to Canada?)

All in all, this movie falls into the category of "2 hours I'll never get back again."

Awful plot, Stupid Characters
nancejo20 January 2014
Warning: Spoilers
Awful movie that seemed more like a propaganda film. Evnironmentalist - Good Guy. Guy from South and believes in God - Bad Guy. The writer can't develop proper characters so he just repeats awful stereotypes of people from the South. Plot holes galore. When you have a guy who is trying to kill you, you press home the attack. I guess the "Good" environmentalist just can't bring himself to kill to save his and his children's lives. It looked like something a teenager would write. For the writer and director's sake, I hope this catastrophe was the result of better parts being left on the cutting room floor. Maybe the short segments that didn't develop were because of time constraints. Who knows? Advice to Redbox (where I got this movie), please put better movies at your locations? I have rented several movies with well known actors that have turned out to be dogs. You business is getting the reputation for being a repository of dumb movies.

recommend watching
mfama_208111 March 2014
Good day fellow movie goers...I literally just got done watching this movie. I will admit that I was a bit Leary of this particular movie because of others reviews and comments about it on here....surprisingly, I found it to be a clean good movie. I would definitely recommend it. Its nice to find a movie that does not have sex and nudity in it. This movie kept my interest throughout it. Its also nice because every other word is not a curse word. I am sure there are others out there who are looking for the same. So if you are looking for a good clean suspense-thriller movie, I would recommend watching this one. Enjoy!!

Is this a joke?
oliverjamescarr28 September 2013
Warning: Spoilers
I watched about 40 minutes before I realised how junk the play off of this film was going to be...

After the basic character build (which was decent) the film just descended to a big clichéd mess. *Semi Spoiler* "Watch out for the river current" because any simple knowledge of water seems to go a miss with the kids and surely enough as I skip through the film, hey look! Kids fallen into the river rapids! /Spoiler

This film is an absolute joke, after watching many 'manufactured' films (Production companies pumping budgets into making any old crap in the hopes of making a profit in the opening weekend before everyone relays how bad it is...) this is the one that has finally got me to sign up for an IMDb account to write reviews to throw down the bad and praise the good.

The film industry has become very competitive and Breakout(2013) just isn't up to par at all...

Higher rating for not being hollywood uniform
illneverbethesame28 March 2023
I must say its truly difficult to find movies to watch that are not exactly like every other hollywood film in that particular genre. I like surprises. So when Im expecting the same old package as usual, with the only thing ever changing from time to time is the paper and ribbons its adorned in & it ends up being something different.....Iike that. Its a good change and one for the better. Movies dont always have to be promiscuous and sexual & corrupting with foul language/vulgar language, even indecent exposure and nudity all the time but if it dont have that people dont like it and its rated low.

Tommy Baxter: I can track cougar! I can track bear! And I can track you! - but i cant hit a barn with a scoped rifle
getjono24 May 2017
Warning: Spoilers
Seriously this movie is rubbish. Tommy Baxter misses 8 shots at 80m with a 40x scoped rifle. He not only misses, but lucky for him gets close and hits the hull of the canoe about 1.5m away from a human target. He would have to be the worst shot in movie outdoor history LMAO At that range anyone half competent would be deciding between a head or body shot

Pleeease - stop the rubbish 😂

How many bullets?
orangetrak28 September 2013
Warning: Spoilers
The main antagonist must have carried 5000 rounds and never had to reload, and this with a with a bolt-action rifle. Additionally, in terms of shooting accuracy, he couldn't hit the ground with his feet. While this movie was tense at times, it was so lacking in detail accuracy that it distracted you from the rest of the story.

Shooting a (very) sawed-off 12ga at 100+ yards didn't help either. The Daughter's phone seemed to have a full charge and great reception in very remote areas. The one bright spot was the bad guy's friend/brother, who seemed to be sharper/tougher than anyone else in the movie. I'm glad this was only .50 @ Redbox.

siburge2 January 2014
Warning: Spoilers
I too have to state my disappointment with this movie, a couple of things that had us yelling at the screen and there were lots i.e the kids after escaping might have gone back to their camp, the bad guy didn't go to the camp either, even though he knew there was one!!they all seem to be running around in circles, Brendon said he could track, yea right. after seeing Brendon appearance for the second time and each time after that my family would all call out "Run" cause that's what he was yelling out, won't mention the rifle thing, except the bad guy did use the scope to sight his quarry but not when shooting it, may be a sporting chance. and to finish, Brendon looked for ever scared silly, and what was the point of him taking a swim towards the end. it was unreal, on a positive side it did keep the wife awake the whole time, and not many movies can make that claim.

Um, what's the point of that movie...?
funnycommentor7 January 2023
The plot of the movie was kinda interesting, but not really innovative (because there are too many action movies similar to this one). The storyline wasn't well-written, it was full of plot holes and it wasn't very well-explained. The characters were kinda interesting, but I didn't really care what was gonna happen to them and they weren't developed, at all. The filming location of the movie was just nice, nothing wow. Of course, there were some intense scenes during that movie, but nothing WOW. The ending scene of the movie was kinda expected, but I didn't really care what was gonna happen, because it was a really boring movie. Overall, it was a low budget action movie, that wasn't innovative at all and I wouldn't recommend it to anyone...

One coincidence after the next
bowmanblue8 September 2014
Oh dear, where to begin. Sadly, Brendan Fraser might be many things, but a 'Bruce Willis' he will never be. What we have here - loosely - is 'Die Hard in the woods.' The former 'George of the Jungle' (aka Mr Fraser) has only gone and got himself locked up for protecting trees (perhaps he should have lived on Pandora?) and thus has found himself separated from his (not so loving) family. Then, if that wasn't bad enough, they only go on a camping trip and witness a murder! Cue Brendan Fraser deciding that that was the time he better break out of prison and save them. Because - and let's face it - no one knows those woods better than an eco-activist who's dedicated his life to protecting them.

So, if you think that sounds any way enjoyable or believable, go ahead and watch it. You may be surprised. However, for me, it was just one unbelievable coincidence after the next. I'm all far 'suspending your disbelief' while watching a film, but this is taking it too far.

If you like the idea of 'Die Hard in the woods' try a little-known film called 'Predator.' It was kind of cool. This, however, is not. End of. Sorry Brendan... but you're better off sticking to watching out for trees rather than protecting them!

Gotta get a rifle like that
pgfaini20 December 2017
The bad guys scoped high powered rifle was not to be believed! From the size of the muzzle, probably a .308Win. He must have taken at least 50 or more shots, without ever reloading, not to mention the five pounds or so of ammunition that would have pulled his pants down :>). Sorry, I'm a retired police officer and gunsmith, and couldn't let that slide.

It's not hideous. Just unpleasant.
mark.waltz2 December 2021
Warning: Spoilers
One dimensional villains and a very noisy soundtrack of intense action makes this outdoorsy thriller too unbelievable and headache inducing. A direct to DVD release (and I can see why), this is one step barely above an Asylum film, had they decided to rip off "The River Wild" with their usual annoying cliched characters and stock bad guys.

It takes forever for the real plotline of this to begin, about half an hour. You shouldn't have that long for character development especially when that part of the script just isn't any good. It's a messy opening without believable motivation that has father Brendan Fraser neglecting his family for environmental issues which ends up with him in jail. Once he's out, he's thrown into the crisis of trying to find his children who have been white water rafting and over here the shots of the murder being committed which has the killers on their trail.

Fraser's a great actor, one of my favorites to come out of the past 30 or 40 years, and it's a shame that his career has been derailed for Hollywood political reasons. To make a living, he has taken roles in films not worthy of his name, and he's one of the saving graces of this movie. Fortunately the actors playing his kids are not cloying ( a rare occurrence not felt in many recent films), and the villains are downright rotten without remorse. You know how this is going to turn out so basically it's 90 + minutes of very loud synthesized music (mostly base), and thus predictable and unnecessary. One of the lesser villains keeps referring to Fraser's wife as mama which is actually pretty sick. I didn't exactly hate this movie, but it's one that I really could have done without although I did enjoy scenes in the woods where I imagined the birds, bees and squirrels chanting simultaneously "Uh oh. There goes the neighborhood."

Simply Awful
moondoguk23 October 2013
This movie was excruciating to watch. Having paid nearly £5 to watch it on Sky Box Office last night, based purely on the synopsis which sounded amazing, I was dismayed at the shockingly poor standard of acting, weak bordering on pointless plot-line and low level camera work throughout. I resorted to fast forwarding the last 30 minutes such was the absurdity of it all. I expected marquee actors like Brendan Fraser and Dominic Purcell to bring substance and weight to the picture but their performances were as wooden and amateurish as the rest of the cast. Had I not paid money, I would have dismissed this movie within a minute when a glimpse of the poorness to follow was highlighted by Fraser. By the end I was so angry that I felt compelled to write this review. Please don't waste 90 minutes of your life watching this film, it's truly not worth it.

Passable B- film - not a complete turkey. Tolerable for a Covid lockdown evening.

Abrupt and unsatisfactory ending.

Not something Purcell or Fraser will look back on with too much professional pride.

Ineffective thriller
wellthatswhatithinkanyway21 January 2014
STAR RATING: ***** Saturday Night **** Friday Night *** Friday Morning ** Sunday Night * Monday Morning

Jack (Brendan Fraser) was imprisoned after accidentally killing someone during an environmental protest. He now has his ex wife as his attorney, and is on the verge of securing his release, only to find himself working outside jail when his own kids find themselves hunted by Tony Baxter (Dominic Purcell) after witnessing him commit murder.

This DVD offering has the right ingredients in place, in regards it's eerie atmosphere and setting, as well as a villain in the shape of Purcell, who has an undeniable presence in these roles that you just wish would be exploited in something better. But it never really comes together, and fails to develop in to a fully satisfying whole, thus never escaping it's restrictive DVD trappings. **

Disappointing! 2/10
leonblackwood17 November 2013
Review: I really got what I expected with this movie. It's just full of running in the woods and some gruesome murder scenes which made it slightly interesting. The storyline was extremely sketchy! I really didn't understand how Brendan Fraser was able to find his kids in the woods so easy, when the baddies couldn't find them anywhere. Anyway, you do end up sticking with the movie to see how the whole running in the woods thing pans out, but the acting was pretty terrible and the storyline really needed some thought. I'm not surprised that it went straight to DVD. Disappointing!

Round-Up: Brendan Fraser has just gone from bad to really bad in my estimation with this movie. He must have just wanted the money. The film looks and feels like it's made for TV and any idiot could have played Brendan's role. To be honest, it didn't really suit him, but Dominic Purcell was a great choice, along with his mentally disturbed brother. Any other person in the world would have called the police when they found out that there kids had been kidnapped, which was what made the whole storyline unbelievable.

I recommend this movie to people who are into there drama/thrillers about a father and his kids trying to escape killers in the woods. 2/10

disappointing
pjlb200818 October 2013
Warning: Spoilers
This is a curious movie. There is a decent set-up. The main characters are defined. Brandon Fraser plays a likable character. His character goes to prison because of an accident which leads to the death of an authority. While he is in prison, his children, a 16 year old girl and 13 year old boy, go camping along a river with a friend of the family. The paths of an evil guy and his mentally challenged brother intersect with Fraser's children during the camping trip, leading to the dreaded chase you have seen 100 times before. The evil character is over-the-top in his rage. No one acting like him could last 5 seconds in society without being jailed. There are severally shoot-outs between Fraser and the evil guy. Boy, these guys are bad shots! The children are whiny, shouty and completely annoying. The development of the mentally challenged character is downright bizarre. Although the plot manipulates you into feeling sorrow for him, and pride in his final actions, it apparently forgets the cruelty he exhibits to another character mid-way through the movie. The likability of Fraser's character erodes as the movie progresses. The set-up leading to Fraser's character getting into the chase was implausible. This movie could have been so much better. Watching it was a chore. There was no genuine excitement. I did not care about any of the characters by the end.
