My pulse it was a pounding
morrisonproductions1 January 2023
I almost turned this episode off halfway through and gave up on the series. The story was close to nonexistent or rather, seemingly so, characters ambling through scenes that seemed inconsequential to the narrative.

-A salesman pimping the way of the future -Helen Mirren's theorizing on why his way will make that future an apocalypse -Driving out into the middle of nowhere in the most dangerous place on earth to look at footprints (a trip that Spencer surely would've seen it as literally poking the lion and never would have taken)

But then the last fifteen minutes came, wiped away all that plodding nonsense and blew me away. My skin tingled all over. I was sitting rigidly upright without any memory of moving into that position. By the very end, tears made very real threats to escape my eyes, and that is extremely rare.

I hope this episode is an omen portending the quality of storytelling coming our way in 2023.

Happy New Year!

One intense episode
terrylarosa2 January 2023
Warning: Spoilers
You'd think the elephant and lion attack would have been enough but they throw in an intense climatic gun battle with several wounded and one death. One of the most intense and suspenseful episodes I've seen in any show in quite a while. Terrific acting and some nice romantic scenes before chaos ensues. Looks like Spencer is finally coming home with his new fiancée. Doubt it Ford is kicking the bucket this early but you never know. This show is even better than 1883 and after that mediocre mid season finale of Yellowstone; that one too. Like to see this one come back but probably won't happen.

My jaw was actually hanging open...

****Spoilers*****

O M G! This was a heart stopping episode.

***Really. Spoilers.***

So EVERYTHING we thought we knew was wrong. Every article speculating that this series would be about John was wrong, since he's DEAD. I'm not even sure who modern John's grandfather is anymore.

AND THANK YOU TAYOLR SHERIDAN FOR GIVING JACOB DUTYON A BETTER DEATH THAN GEORGE LUCAS GAVE HAN SOLO! I know, he's not dead yet, but by now we know what dark blood coming from the right side of the abdomen means.

That said, really? I mean, Harrison Ford has been BRILLIANT so far, and it resulted doesn't look like he's going to make it to episode 5, much less 8.

Jaw-dropping

Warning: Spoilers
Seriously, my jaw was actually hanging open.

But before I get ahead if myself (and into spoilers), I love it when Taylor Sheridan starts to wax poetic. How does anyone have, much less voice, such impressive insight into to human nature?

****Spoilers****

**** Really - Spoilers ****

O M G. It seems EVERYTHING we thought we about where this story was heading, or who this story was about, was WRONG. We barely got to know little John in 1883, and now he's DEAD???? I'm no longer even sure which brach of the family tree leads to the present-day Duttons.

**** More Spoilers ****

Well, we all know by now what dark blood from the right abdomen means, right? (I really do NOT want Jacob to be dead, but do we expect him to survive Episode 4 ?) That say, THANK YOU, TAYLOR SHERIDAN FOR GIVING JACOB DUTTON A BETTER DEATH THAN GEORGE LUCAS GAVE HAN SOLO. If I had to watch Harrison Ford die again, at least it was "a good death" ( to the extent there is such a thing).

Amazing ending

Warning: Spoilers
I think Sheridan should write less than what he is writing now.

He had 6 season for different shows and 2 script for films in just 2 years and obviously he's working on next seasons of 1923, Tulsa king, Yellowstone and Mayor of kingstown and his upcoming projects such as 6666, 1883:The Bass Reeves Story, Lioness, Landman, Fast and his new project that he revealed a few days ago.

I'm not saying that i hate 1923, in fact, i really like it, but when you comper it to 1883, it feels like a soap opera!

The romance beetwen Spencer and Alexandra is so bad!

Just remember the love between Elsa and Ennis in 1883 (Africa) storyline was a little bit flat (i think it's done now after the magnificent ending of episode 3) Still, 1923 has 2 great storylines (Duttons fight for their land and Catholic boarding school which i think is the best for now) and i think the rest of the show is going to be great (but not as magical as 1883) so, we have to wait.

Warning: Spoilers
Loved 1883. Love Taylor Sheridan.

Mirren, Flynn & Ford, ditto.

While I'm enjoying the ranch side, REALLY struggling with the Africa line. Let's come home from the war & try to single-handedly wipe out big cats & hephalumps. And make sure to show dead animals so there is no doubt they're dead. And instantly fall in love while we're about it.

And please, save me the killing animals was what it was all about back then parsing.

If that continues, it's going to be a much shorter story for me, as I'll be ff-ing thru it.

I was rooting for the elephant to just step on the jeep.

Ray Bradbury fans will understand my review title.

The Catholic-run school scenes are going to be really difficult for all kinds of folks as well. True stories, absolutely brutal to sit thru. If we warn watchers abt language & drug-use, this might warrant a heads up as well.

This is ep. 3, hoping they leave the African Continent soon.

9/10 for the ranch team, 3/10 for Africa side.

Ok but the Africa storyline was unintentionally hilariousl lol...
ajmillar2 January 2023
1923 is a good show...not great but, it is good. However, the whole Africa storyline is something out of a romance novel. In fact, it's even more over the top, cliched filled than it should be. Hell, Danielle Steele's romance novels were grittier, lol.

I like the Spencer character but does he need to fall head over heels with the English woman HE JUST MET 48 HOURS AGO?!.

1883 is the superior show. Superior to Yellowstone and 1923 because it was gritty and I cared so much about the characters. I love Sheridan's work and watch all three Dutton dramas but would rank them as such: 1883...then Yellowstone, then 1923.

Episode 3
bobcobb30110 January 2023
Warning: Spoilers
Well, we did not have to wait until the season finale to find out what the opening scene from the premiere was about. That was a little bit of a shock as usually they tease something and don't address it again until the finale, so having that resolved and wrapped up in episode three was a bit of a shock, but a welcome shock for sure.

This show has strong sense of purpose, they know what they are hoping to accomplish, but there is also just an overwhelming sense of wasted time. You cannot just rely on images of the old west and these expensive towns that they built as sets to hook viewers in forever.

Sorry I don't get it?

Three episodes in and I don't know who's who and what their overall role is in the story. Going from the ranch to Africa, to orphanage, to the city, back to Africa? Very disjointed and confusing. I fell asleep twice watching this episode, so I had to try to remember where I left off and start from there. What does any of this have to do with modern Yellowstone? Is somebody supposed to be John Dutton's dad or granddad or is that yet to come? I'll give it one more episode and call it a day. I guess I was expecting too much. And is Harrison Ford in this series? Hardly ever see him and Mirren. So sad, I was expecting much more.

Warning: Spoilers
Am I watching the same show that other people seem to be watching?? I mean this show is somewhat original in a different story that most things are on TV at the moment and it's got some pretty big actors and actresses in it but let's face it it's not all that in a handbag.. It's pretty disjointed there's some sloppy bad acting they're clearly using female sex reality to try and sell the poor storyline, you can clearly see the girl's nipples for half of the time they're in the town and then we get to see her naked later on.. Gross. Shameful! Harrison Ford and Helen Mirren are definitely excellent actor and actress but that's not keeping this show alive. The story really isn't all that interesting It's about ranching and the guy in Africa. It's not early that much going on. Are people so desperate for decent TV that they just go insane when something is slightly okay? I don't get it.

I really wanted to like this. I tried Yellowstone and now 1923. They're boring! I'm not one of those action-film addicts. I can take a slower story, but this latest group of western sagas... moves... so... slowly. It's like they're purposely dragging out routine shots of people walking, talking, riding horses. We get it. The scenery is pretty but get to the point already!

Also, the trek through Africa is just excruciating. You know why we don't often hear about Americans getting attacked by wild animals? It's because they don't typically walk around isolated brush land in Africa. Sadly, the characters involved here were so uninteresting that I started rooting for the wildlife.

At this point, I'm wishing all the Duttons luck and moving back to stories based in big cities.

Uneven & weak writing in this episode
freedomkrg28 February 2024
My rating for the series overall will probably be much higher, but the writing for this episode was very lazy.

Any scene that involved action in this episode was full of impossible, improbably physics defying events.

Writing about hunting that seems to be written by someone who has never seen, handled or fired a weapons, and certainly never hunted.

The "cheesecake" somehow has access to a never ending supply of sexy lingerie in the wilds of Africa, in 1923. Uh-huh. Okay.

Cowboys, who never need, never use shovels while out with the herd, show up and provide half a dozen shovels, out of nowhere, when they are unexpectedly needed.

Again, this concerns this episode, and generally I don't find much to nit-pick in Yellowstone series'
