Outstanding episode with cleverly shifted timelines
wryboy8 January 2023
It's all out war now between Cara Dutton and Bannon. Timothy Dalton enters the series as Bannon's wealthy backer whose greedy interests lie in the riches of the surrounding mountains. Teonna finally finds a better use for a stack of bibles. Spencer and Alex find themselves on a seaside coast of Africa somewhere, enjoying an idyllic romance of sun, sand and waves. Sheridan series is hitting its stride now and this episode does not disappoint. His clever use of slightly shifted timelines makes for a blockbuster closing sequence with Spencer and Alex. If the closing graphic is accurate, it appears we will have to wait a full month for the next episode.

Top class tv
DrMarazanvose8 January 2023
Taylor Sheridan I salute you.

I have seen a lot of television over the years and metaphorically waded through a lot of dross that studios churn out without thought nor care to the content nor the quality. In recent times it has become much worse as a swell of activism has stained the industry further.

Your shows rise above the mediocrity and show the rest not only how it should be done but why - to entertain, to give us a break from our daily lives and let us escape reality if only briefly.

I have watched Yellowstone, 1883, Mayor of Kingstown, Tulsa King and now 1923 and you just keep knocking it out of the park.

Extremely well crafted series with fanstastic actors and production values to match.

So little tv makes me lose track of time and leaves me wanting more.

This may read like a bot wrote it, like so many other reviews, but I can assure you this is just the words of a true fan.

Long may you reign supreme because you sir deserve it.

Thank you.

As for this episode - if I could give it 11 out of 10 I would :)

Masterpiece !

Masterpiece !

Last week i said that 1923 has some problem in storytelling and even though i really like it, relationships between characters are not likeable as much as it was in 1883 but this episode.... man... it was a punch in the gut and Helen Mirren, this legendary lady was freaking great and totally stole the show!

In this episode, we had three different feelings in three storyline: 1-The Duttons fights I admitt that in the beginning of the episode i was emotionally moved.

This storyline was sad but with some hope.

2-Catholic boarding school it was full of shock with and it left me with wonder that what the hell is going to happen?

And still, there was hope 3- Spencer Finally... this is what i was waiting for!

There's a conflict between this story and Duttons fight.

This one starts with happines like (my life is can't get any better) but the ending is pure sandness.... and still hope.

The core of this episode was hope, like how i feel about the rest of the show!

Convent education: bringing it all back
Matti-Man22 February 2023
Anyone who thinks Taylor Sheridan's portrayal of the draconian behaviour of the "sisters of mercy" is over-the-top has clearly never attended a convent school.

I was at convent school for a year in 1964/5 courtesy of my Roman Catholic grandmother and while, granted, the education I received did set me up for a scholarship at a good grammar school and, for the most part, the nuns were kind and considerate, there was one sister who was borderline psychotic. She was very fond of battering ten-year olds across the back of the hands with a metal edged ruler and on one occasion, my parent were forced to "have a word" because they felt they were paying fees for education, not for torture.

My wife, too, was convent-educated and more than once ran away from the school when she was denied a drink of water by the "well-meaning" nuns.

So I would have no problem with Sheridan's portrayal of nuns, especially in view of what's come to light around how the Catholic church treated unwed mothers in Ireland as recently as the 1950s.

That aside, 1923 continues to be a riveting watch, almost - but not quite - as good as 1883. But then, I'm only on episode 5, so there's every opportunity for Sheridan to knock it out of the park in the last few episodes and elevate my score of 9 to 10.

Standing side by side with the best episodes of "Yellowstone"
Geekofriendly10 January 2023
Warning: Spoilers
I am envious of the creativity that Taylor Sheridan has amassed and even spread further along his Yellowstone saga. Because "1923" just might become the crown jewel to the mighty Alabaman throne.

Ford and Mirren haven't been this good in ages; the old man moves like his body has literally de-aged by 10-15 years just by riding a horse again and you can tell she's just having a tremendous time stretching her acting legs. The rest of the cast has also quickly sprung their own little roots and this episode even gave us a taste of Dalton as a devilish businessman.

The particular standout of this episode is one of the most well-deserved deaths of a terrible person in recent TV history (almost literally "by Bibles") . Every time Teonna (played by Aminah Nieves in what is sure to be a breakout performance) goes into her full-on rebellious rage mode, I become a gitty cheerleader and root for her freedom and liberties as if her character was part of my family.

The most shining stand-outs of the show however are Alex (played by a very lively Julia Schlaepfer) and Spencer (Brandon Sklenar who somehow managed to steal the show from the get-go with barely uttering a single word). Sherdian went full "Out of Africa" on us and sprinkled it with his staple sheridanistic wisdoms to form one of those unforgettable lovebirds that are simply magnetic. I would love if the new couple continued to explore their gorgeous subtropical surroundings and not have a care in the world and I will find it a bit jarring and disappointing when that mountanous reality hits them on the head. I somehow feel protective of their joy. Silly, come to think of it.

What can I say, Sheridan writes great romance like a 21st century Jane Austin and it goes without saying that he knows how to provide action and thrilling adventure. And he especially knows how to put all of it to make (yet another!!) spectacularly engaging TV show.

Last two episodes touched the greatness
8512223 June 2023
Greetings from Lithuania.

Last two episodes of "1923" touched the greatness. Everything worked on a highest orders: storytelling, acting, cinematography, directing. Writing was superb as usual. At this point in the series i can say that i prefer 1923 over 183 so far - it is that good.

The setting in Africa and cinematography reminded of Terrenc Mallicks works - they are breathtaking. Every storyline so far is highly involving, and brutal in its own way. Acting by Aminah Nieves is very strong - so far she is one of the leads i think.

Overall, 1923 so far is better then great - last two episode touched the greatness.

Nope, 1923 is still nowhere as great as 1883...
ajmillar14 January 2023
1923 is good but, still not great. 1883 remains the superior show and curiously enough, it has to do with the ROMANCE NOVEL silliness of Spencer and Alex. It's not believable because it feels so forced-YOU MUST LOVE THIS COUPLE!!-SEE THEIR CHEMISTRY??!!. It's way too forced...like something out of an afternoon soap opera.

1883 has the perils of the Oregan trail and all the different interpersonal relationships going for it. I watch 1923 and I start missing James, Margaret, Elsa and Shea-As well as Thomas, Wade and Ennis, Sam. I watch 1923 and chuckle through the corny soap opera romance between Spencer and Alex-Who have no chemistry which is why it's being oversold.

The portrayal of nuns is such religious bigotry
kkbmkwgcq17 January 2023
A good story but the portrayal of nuns is so over the top that it isn't even believable. Cringy to say the least. It seems like the producers are trying to pander to the Indigenous cause so much that they make the religious sisters so demonic that it is unbelievable. At least in most of the Yellowstone episodes, there is lot of grey mostly portraying two sides to anything, but believable. Here they go to such extremes to paint the religious as evil that it takes away from the plot. When they try too hard to portray someone as a victim, it takes away from the point they are trying to make. Cringy artistic license.

Episode 4
bobcobb30110 January 2023
Warning: Spoilers
I was surprised to see such high scores for this episode as I found it to be quite boring actually. We did have the student finally get revenge on the ruler abuser sister, but that felt lke a cop out of a cheap violence to shock us rather than to tell us a substantial story.

The scenes in Africa and in the water were just dragging so long and accomplished nothing. I am sure some people loved it, but I am not one who watches TV to "ship" couples, I would much rather be witness to some exciting drama than seeing a couple in love.

The show is still worth watching, but definitely felt a little boring tonight.
