- Inspector Reid and Sgt. Drake investigate the death of Samuel Fanthorpe, a mechanical engineer employed by the Argentine shipping company. It's clear from Homer Jackson's examination of the body that Fanthorpe's spine was severed with a sharp knife before his body was thrown into the Thames where he drowned. According to the managing director of the shipping line, Fanthorpe had developed a new powerful engine that would make theirs the fastest ships on the seas. Arriving in London around the same time is American tycoon Theodore Swift who is hoping to buy the Argentine line and merge it with his own shipping concerns. That isn't the only reason he's there however: he is also after Long Susan while his Pinkerton man Frank Goodnight is gunning for Homer Jackson. In their efforts, a policeman will die.—garykmcd
