Filming wrapped in May 2014, with release set for April 2015. However, the studios weren't happy with the initial cut. Soon after, Bingbing Fan ran into tax problems. Fan was a major Chinese actor, and Chinese investors contributed 50% of the film's budget. Fan's income tax issues and the resulting negative publicity in China effectively killed her career, and with it any chance of a lucrative Chinese release. With no major studio backing, and Pierce Brosnan as the only international star in the cast, the film sat on the shelf for almost 8 years.
The film was partly filmed in the Palace of Versailles, including a huge dance sequence filmed inside the Hall of Mirrors. They had to film at night, when the tourists weren't around, and struggled to finish up by 5:30 a.m.
William Hurt died two months after this film's release, leaving this as his last film to be released. The last film he shot was Black Widow (2021), but that was released before.
Filming began in Melbourne 23 April 2014 with an announced release date of 10 April 2015.
