1970s Turkey perfectly rendered
shirley12vineyard30 August 2018
Reading some of the others' comments confirms for me that unfortunately world-wide audiences of a particular country's screen industry forget to drop their own cultural spectacles for another pair for the vastly different sensibility that is conveyed - here Turkey. Also to realise that these dizi are a unique format. An English speaking 'westerner' just doesn't 'get it' always. Many 'southern-Europe-to-middle-eastern' ways of thinking are vastly different. The under-pinning of secular Islam is very enlightening, as fans who view a lot of this genre can attest; so much of that culture relates so well to the best life values. (Yet often there is no overt 'religiousness', bar the plain rituals of funeral and wedding.) It's so good to get a feel for all of these things. Marshall-ah! The family table; the emphasis on healthy eating, the daily courtesies, the patterns expected in the 'coupling' department, the tactile affection commonplace between siblings and family members,

Story-telling is so embedded, poetry is generally known and treasured and metaphor and allegory are everywhere in this part of the world, and in Karadayi. In my country anyone who drew attention to themselves gently to launch into an often poetic story, and to have the company s/he's with (usually his family) attentively loving it would be an oddity. The Persian, Sufi, Aramaic, Turkish, Arab and all the 'stahns' have a huge store of narrative. Long-windedness can be a put-down summation. We have to start by knowing that these TV dizi are not 'soaps' - they are tele-novellas with 2 or 3 seasons separated by and summer breaks. For impatient Anglo-celtics they can be too drawn out, but for me as someone who just isn't held by today's trends Sci-fi, or CGi, GOT, Block-busters or fantasy, there is gold to be found in Turkish drama. The ease of incorporating passion, sensory delight, sweet verbal exchanges perfectly expressed in ease of owning emotion and poetic sweetness. The de-sensitised "West' calls these attributes cheesy, cliche - sadly.

The technical expertise in Karadayi is to die for, settings, location always real (not parked out like the US/UK ones can be) - costumes perfect etc. Karadayi just won me over right at the start; amazing to see a 1970s setting in perfect detail; dial telephones, woolen overcoats, flared pants, snall family shops, tweed women's professional suits, non-skyhigh heels, American imported cars. I couldn't fault any of these aspects. And I'm surprised that no other comment has rejoiced in this. (No cellphones interrupting every 5 minutes as they do in the large number of contemporary urban popular dizi!).

There seems to an endless supply of gorgeous looking people in the cast but also the ordinary and unprepossessing. Kenan Irmilioglu is of charismatic looks, is tall and imposing with his co-star Bergutor Kolar a tall actor also, a perfect foil for her co-lead. Mahir is too noble by far perhaps, given as he is, to fiery anger often causing trouble. Cetin Tekendor is a veteran 'older person' with a 'centering' role in the story. But all the cast performs expertly. Netflix often start a sub-titled series off, but due to contract issues will often show only the 1st Season. The frustrated viewer must search for various server Groups ('Turkish Dramas with English subtitles' is a starting Google) which provide sub-titled versions which usually require a donation.

I give this series high praise - although I may find viewing all episodes for the full show's length a challenge as always there seems to be a too dense middle stage with more sub-plots and additional characters, adding twists and turns. But Karadayi has so much going for it it should be worth going the full distance.

Raising up against Treachery
azeemmujad17 October 2022
One of the masterpieces of Turkish producers and directors as well as the actor. A series full of excitement and resisting against enemies. The rise of a brave and courageous man of a territory with an aim of revealing criminal's real face hidden behind masks which gradually succeeds doing it and prevails justice for all the people. One of the leading actor's famous words in the series.

"If you don't burn,if I don't burn and if we don't burn who will bring light to the darkness"

In conclusion from all the above discussions we reach to the result that the series is full of:Mystery,Treachery,Betrayal,Moral Lessons,Justice privilege,Lawmen's and government authorities fake identities,Loyalty.

Conflicted
fmayila15 April 2024
Suffering through this series.

Love love everything about this drama but at season 2, I'm starting to really suffer through the plot.

I love the addition of a new character but it's not enough to push the narrative forward.

I'm left with the feeling that the story is going nowhere and the constant repeating of plots (back and forth of the main couple, in and out of jail, etc) is exhausting.

Reluctantly taking a break.

Reluctantly because it's still an amazing cast and script but right now I can't deal with the repetition. At this point, I don't know what they could have done differently to push the story forward.

Karadayi: Full of life lessons
lfeisee19 September 2018
The first time I started Karadayi was three years ago, I watch two episodes on YouTube and stopped because I thought it was too slow... then three years later, it showed up on my Netflix recommendations. I was at a different place in my life and I started watching it again.. and lo and behold, I couldn't stop! I binge watched the 93 episodes that were on Netflix in two months (because I work for a living).. and I was left wanting more! I needed to see how it ended. So I looked and looked till I was able to find Seasons 2 and 3 on another source. I loved how the series took time to develop the characters, and how those characters changed throughout the series. Some even transformed from annoying to stellar. What I realized is that by the end of the series, I knew each and every character so well that I could anticipate their next move. And I knew the streets of Mahir's neighborhood.. where the bakery was, where the Kara shoe shop was, where the indoor bazaar was and most of all, I looked forward to Mahir and Feride's rendezvouz in the beautiful and quaint Cay Bahcese. I also loved how characters weren't just good or evil.. they were given context.. you knew why each character was the way they were. And when one of them overcame a difficult life choice, or came to a realization, you cheered. The story starts as a murder.. Mahir Kara's father, a shoemaker in Istanbul, is framed for a murder and Mahir goes undercover as a law clerk on his father's case to prove his father innocent. While undercover he falls in love with the Judge in charge of his father's case. But as the series progresses, you see that its more than just a murder.. that the frameup is a result of corruption in the system.. and that is just the tip of the iceberg. Along the way, over the course of the 3 plus years that is the timeframe of the series, you meet the Kara family. You go through their trials and tribulations as they struggle to prove their father's innocence and you witness a love story unlike any you have ever seen. Every woman should be loved the way Mahir loves Feride, and every man should be loved the way Feride loves Mahir. Their love is mature, self sacrificing and has withstood the test of time and tragedy. Only the first season of the series focuses on the murder trial, but the other two seasons bear out the fruits of the investigation that Mahir along Feride have conducted along the way. Quotes like "As long as the sun comes up, and we open our eyes, we hold on to hope." may seem cliche, but you will remember their true meaning as you watch the tribulations of the Kara family.. And new quotes like "If I don't burn myself, if you don't burn yourself, if we don't burn ourselves, how can there be light in the darkness?" will forever be ingrained in your memory as you face the notion of righteousness vs power in your every day life. I can honestly say that Karadayi gave me a whole new perspective on life, family and justice. I highly recommend it.

A very well built series with a very real-looking story
EimanRahimi28 July 2015
I feel a duty to share my feelings about Karadayı. I watched this series dubbed in Persian split in 350 episodes. I feel a close cultural background with this story especially the timeframe of its events in the 1970s. As a whole, the series look quite different in texture from almost every other series or movie I have ever watched in my life. It is very real. I am not a critique, but I am going to share what I could absorb from Karadayı:

1. I admire the great play by Kenan İmirzalıoğlu, Bergüzar Korel, Çetin Tekindor, Yurdaer Okur, and virtually all the cast. I can't point out any particular actor/actress. They are a team of professionals in one place. Kenan, for instance, can express a broad spectrum of feelings on his face. He can mimic, let's say, 15 shades of happiness, 16 shades of sadness, 17 shades of anger, combinations of them, as well as diverse shades of indifference, astonishing, and virtually any feeling in its right context without any exaggeration. In his extreme anger, Kenan can momentarily get a little bit hopeful and happy; and then resume to his previous level of anger. For example, anytime after getting good news about his father, Nazif, who he holds him in high regards, his face blows into cheers and happiness. I have never been able to feel the life as vivid as Kenan feels it!. He should be a gifted actor whose face muscles are richly innervated. Kenan has been excelling in his roles compared to his plays in the previous series. Same thing with Bergüzar. She can love you now and despise you next minute. She can be so flirting in this scene and so serious in the next scene. They both can cry anytime they want. Other main characters are also great players. I should also congratulate the Persian dubbers. They conveyed passion, love, kindness, anger, and every other feeling through their voices. You could easily tell when the character was determined or hesitant just by listening to their voices. Kenan has enjoyed many dubbers in his other series such as Ezel, but Mr. Nader Keymaram has done an extraordinarily superior dubbing job for Kenan in this series.

2. The directorship is simply GREAT! The way the scenes relate to each other and the story timeline is put together entices you to be impatient to watch the following scene or the next episode. I couldn't sleep enough just to watch it continuously, even 15 episodes in a row sometimes. Although the story could still be trimmed easily, the prolonged story is not a big deal, especially when moral lessons fill in the conversations.

The series depict a story that seems very real. I noticed some less real or less logical parts throughout the story, but they are infrequent and pleasantly forgivable. These less real scenes are just symbolic, used to narrate the message of the story, and don't affect the beauty of the whole thing.

There is a high fidelity in expressing the time of day (using dusk, the moon, and the newspaper boy) and time of year (using people's clothing, green plants, winter trees, snow, and people discussing weather).

3. The camera does a professional job. The camera captures the scenes virtually from any angle regardless the location, either a small room, on the street, on a hill, etc. The camera is just salient in three dimensions. It can move fast focusing in or out, descending or ascending based on the stress level of the scene. It can suddenly start to swirl vertically or horizontally if needed. It showed Mahir once he was sitting on his bed in the jail, leaning to wall behind, drown in his thoughts and banging his head slightly, slowly, and repeatedly to the wall. The camera, showing him from his side 90 degrees turned, as if he is banging is head to the ground, to entrain your empathy with his deep sorrow. The camera does a lot of subtle tricks in every episode. I wish I were a cinema critic to pick all its tricks. But the ones I can notice, help me to feel the fragrance of the scenes better. The light helps the camera to emphasize the feelings of the characters much better.

4. The music is from a great Turkish composer, Toygar Işıklı. I didn't know him before, but I am addicted to some soundtracks such as Ateşe Yürümek, Ölüme Gülümse (İdam Sehpası), Elimi Tut, and Benden Kaçış Yok (Turgut). I should appreciate his choices of the old songs including but not limited to Sensiz Saadet Neymiş (by Yaşar Güvenir), Kıskanıyorum (by İnci Çayırlı), Unutama Beni (by Esmeray), Geri Dönülmez Bir Yoldayım (by Neşe Karaböcek), Sensiz Kaldığım Geceler (by Şecaattin Tanyerli)

In summary, Karadayı is the best series I've ever watched. I laughed and cried with the characters. I was just stuck to the chair, hungry to watch next episodes. I wish it never ended. I will watch it again next summer.

Superior in every way!
windwhis121 March 2018
My heart sings, cries, laughs, and warms as I watch this series. I find that I can not watch the American TV series as the modern producers seem to go for cheap sex, bad humor, and shallow content. My opinion may be viewed as being bias and general but as I compare the content, and the depth of the story and acting in Karadayi I can only say that it superior in every way. It successfully portrays real selfless love not just between the main two characters, Mahir and Feride but allow love for family, neighbors and friends. The characters, emotion, interaction with family all feel real and genuine. The love story and struggle has left me in tears many times. I look forward to coming home and spending sometime with these characters. Netflix customer service can provide no information on when or if the remaining series will be aired and so I wait with the hope that Netflix will stop streaming partial seasons of these foreign TV shows and either get all on the seasons and air them or not put them on the site for viewing; it is frustrating and annoying.

Netflix/ ResumenHD
mwaceves21 September 2017
I loved this series. I don't speak Turkish, but I found a way to see it through all three seasons.

First, I loved the actors. All the principal actors were fantastic. The Kara family, Feride and her mother, the friends from the neighborhood, the other love interests, were all very believable. A few of the bad guys were over the top, but I guess the global audience loves seeing the bad boys being bad. Targut was kind of funny when he had his tantrums.

I thought the plot was well developed and had lots of interesting twists. I enjoyed the backstories of all the characters. I fell in love with the Kara family, especially the parents, with their love, strength, courage and poetic embrace of life.

The direction was good. The actors worked together seamlessly. All that emotion was pulled out of everyone. There were many beautiful romantic scenes. The director did not depend on cheap tricks, like showing the same events over and over, or holding onto facial expressions too long. The settings were interesting.

I binge watched season 1 subtitled in English on Netflix. The rich voices of the actors made it easier to read along and know what was going on. After season 1, I looked around YouTube for more English, but

just found a few scenes.

Then I found Resumen HD in Spanish. This became the Feride and Mahir show because they cut most of the other scenes that had other actors, keeping just enough to keep the plot together. There were things that I never did understand, like why Mahir's brother had a sudden change of opinion, but I still enjoyed watching the story to the end.

Big promise that comes up way short
fringe-180087 April 2020
Entertaining but that's about it. There is lots of shortcomings. First of all this way of thinking about life and about decisions in general do not appeal to my way of thinking. Do people really believe that this situation with main characters would work in real life? The idea that someone in their 30's would be willing to sacrifice their life to save their old father is just naive. The judge in her 30's is still a virgin and never belonged to anyone else can only make sense in Turkish culture , I guess. And why do they have to make , supposedly, good characters look like animals out of control when they want to make them just look mad? Just look at Mahir when he gets mad. He looks worst than a psycho. And he is supposed to be a good character. Another story is Feride. She can be tough and independent with anything and anybody else, including Mahir, when she has to but when it comes to her father she is like a 5 year old who has no say on anything and can't think for herself. Is this normal in Turkish culture or where does this come from? This show has to be based on something(every day life in Turkey?) otherwise why would they make it like this? Nazif Kara. I can't stand him. He thinks that he is a king and people, his family included, have to ask him for everything and kiss his hand! Turkish creators can't be surprised that these shows are not as appealing to western world viewers as say US shows. They get tired really quickly of the aggressive nature of the main characters when they should be portrayed maybe a bit softer ( they still can be tough without looking like caged animals). These kind of shows are probably great for third world country audiences but western world will not accept this kind of portrayal of good guys, family members like fathers and mothers control of their sons and daughters. etc.. Can't believe it that people were watching this garbage for 115 episodes. P.S. The evilness, backstabbing, disloyalty that gets portrayed in turkish shows is not seen anywhere else and I never new it existed.

What a great Series
sueburke-043022 September 2017
My husband and I binge watch this 1st series of Karadayi and enjoyed every episode and not wanting them to finish. We feel anxious now about when we might see the 2nd and 3rd series on Netflix in Australia??

This series is up there with Magnificent Century, 1001 Nights, Gran Hotel and we have had many late nights trying to fit in as many episodes as we could. Just lovedit!!

The music, scenery and the acting are amazing all the actors had a depth that draw you in to their colourful worlds. We find that there is no going back to TV in general for us which has no content to speak of.

The Turkish sure know how to put together a great series that keep you wanting to go back each night to catchup on their stories.

Without good acting though the storyline would not be realised as it is in these series, wonderful actors who portray their characters so well.

It's a 20 out of 10 for us!!

Rather Complex drama
lia0002717 June 2015
Warning: Spoilers
OK first I really didn't like to watch this series mostly because Turkey's series has very long eps, boring and easy to predict plot, also the story is too complex with mindset that different with people's mindset in my country, however this serial even though the story is rather dragging since Turkey's drama tends to make unwanted scenes and uses slow-motion for the effect still acceptable. Let's see for a foreigner like me who grew up in a free country and received education abroad I'm used to having broad minded and easy-going attitude so I sometimes rather don't understand with the naivety of the characters' mind but still I try to understand more. So when the story went to season 2 it became better mainly because of the plot. The villain truly showed brilliant thinking and other character like the brother of the hero here showed distinguish breakthrough of naive and kind mindset still the script written slow hence the series which suppose can be short become longer than its necessary. Then on season 3 where the start rather entertaining to see the male lead became smart and nurtured as a kind gangster by his father's friend but then the writer tried to make him looked dumb again by made him come back to his old lover (Feride) well let's say because she was a dumb she was dragging her lover became dumb too, let's call Mahir and Feride the main lead characters here as dumb and dumber just like what a person wrote in one of Karadayi's forum.

I find it funny reading comments mostly from "Karadayi" forum that called "Orhan" the hero's little brother here as Dumb even called him and his ex-brother in law Dumb and Dumber, well certainly the person who wrote it is rather dumb herself and yes the ex-brother in law is truly dumb but let's try to understand that this guy was losing his beloved kid certainly he could get angry to the world and get drunk, back to the topic Orhan is not a dumb person this guy using his brain and mainly because Orhan is the smartest in the family because his brother is a hot-headed person so he was easily being set up by many people and his hot attitude fought with injustice openly created many enemies for him and his family while Orhan is a calm person he would think first before act (of course accept for love he chose his ex whom betrayed him once). However on season 3 they changed the smart Orhan became stupid Orhan, Orhan was dumb when he chose to go back to his stupid brother then almost got himself killed few times because of his stupidity. The father is OK but had old- fashion of thinking, the women there cannot live without men supporting them yup on the old days it happened but women in Kara's family are totally being over protected by the father and brothers hence making them cannot think far beyond border. The villain here "Mehmet Saim" is a genius master mind freak killer, he never used his own hand to kill people instead using other's but the man got what he deserved at the end. Then we have the heroine "Feride" Mahir's ultimate lover, supporter, and true love she was rather naive and stupid but she was growing up throughout the series because she was living in a world created by her father so she didn't really know the situation and the bad things happen in a real world. I didn't really admire her selfish love for showing amazing love for Mahir and not caring for her parents' thought and well being at all but the writer worked hard to show that her dad is the evil one so it's OK for his child to take her dad's love for granted, while honestly I can understand his dad's mind. Who would want her/his daughter to end up with a rude and stupid person like Mahir who throughout episodes always ended up in jail because his hot-tempered attitude hence easy for his enemies to trap him killing someone, no plot changed it happened around 3/4 time already or maybe more until I lose count of his stupidity. Here the writer of the story tried testing their love into a despair before actually gained "Happily ever after" ending.

So watch this drama if you have spare time with your family because this series teaching people about hideous and cunning way of people hurting others and for people to survive and defend their family and love. Most importantly not to act like Mahir or you'll end up in big deep troubles like he had and don't act like Feride a selfish young woman with no logical thinking who can only think about her beautiful and pure love while not thinking about the consequences of her actions, she always think that she is the most tragic heroine in the world while hello most people couldn't be as lucky as her being pampered in a rich family, being protected, and more important get a good job as a judge because of your dad's connection and being respected and listened to by people. Teens can believe this non sense story but the rationale will not.

I don't really like this serial but since it is showing in my country on weekdays night so it's quite entertaining to watch it but the story as I wrote before is too dragging and many unnecessary scenes are shown also the characters becoming stupid on season 3 except for Ayten, a smart woman who could protect herself after her divorce and still cared about others.

Btw this series is better than ezel, that one is boring and too complicated and non-sense with tragic ending.

One of the best TV Series, Watch it !
privategoko5 December 2012
Warning: Spoilers
Kenan İmirzalıoğlu is one of the best actor in Turkey, and as his last TV Series " Ezel ", this one is also as perfect as it, if i summaries, the story is taking place in Istanbul at around 1973, and it tells about a murder of general attorney, who is killed at his own room. There is an old man called Nazif is accused of this murder, that there is a secretary witnessed this murder but the problem is that she only saw him with a bloody letter opener near general attorney's dead body. After that Nazif got captured and is waiting for the death penalty. Nazif has an ambitious, tough and intelligent son called Mahir. Mahir has 1 month to convince the adjudicator that this murder wasn't done by his father Nazif. He planned to go to the court as a trainee advocate, he prepared every fake necessary documents to start his internship with the adjudicator. This was a perfect planned assassination, that he needs to solve many things and also he should be careful to not to show his real identity. And the story begins !!

Addicted to Turkush TV
vandaiwanowski5 June 2017
I feel compelled to reply to some comments made in this forum. Ezel was my first experience of a Turkish TV series and I adored it. I do not agree that the show was boring, nor complicated. Once you got your head around the plot it was simple enough to work out! As for boring, well the slow motion & emotional scenes are what is best about these shows. I had been watching American shows prior and yes I enjoyed some very much, however by comparison most are filled with explicit sex scenes and overly glamorous film stars. There are exceptions naturally, and I have set aside that aspect in those that I have liked.

Yes there is a glamour to the cast of Ezel and Karaday1 but they come across as super intelligent and real. You can relate to them easily. They come across as deep and meaningful people who have worked hard to achieve such successful shows.

I am mid way through Karaday1, loving every second of it, as mentioned in other reviews, I too cannot wait till the next episode. I too find myself binge watching, till wee hours and not ashamed to admit the odd afternoon session.

Karaday1 did take a little longer for me to get into, but it gets better as it goes along. Long - yes, boring - definitely not, complicated - takes concentration which is a credit to the writers.

The music to Ezel is haunting and will stay with me forever. Thank you Turkish TV

Karadayi is definitely the best series i've ever seen. I've never seen anything like that!! It's so smart and exciting and every episode was full of action and excitement since episode 1 till episode 115. I would like to thank the whole cast for this amazing show i'm so grateful i watched it and i wanna thank them for the hard work and everything else. I never regretted watching this show and i would like to tell everyone else to watch it because it's worth it. Also it's almost unbelievable how things changed from episode 1 till episode 115. And i loved the new characters in season 3 and btw season 3 was the best, everything was clear and everyone is working together to give this amazing result, all the seasons are remarkable but season 3 is just something else, i'm so proud of the cast and i'm thankful.

Outstanding drama series about the beauty of family, honor and love.
raneydog-5157019 September 2018
Excellent series with two main characters, Mahir and Feride , but supported by a stellar group of actors and actresses throughout the entire series. While it is subtitled, that is never a problem because you become so swept up in the storyline you lose sight of the fact you are reading the words. As an American, I am hard pressed to think of a series that is this compelling and well done. I'm aging myself but The Thornbirds and North and South come to mind. It is a must see series. You will also begin your obsession with Turkish drama.

One of my favourites
mozzarellasticks1 September 2023
I really loved this drama and I strongly recommend it if you're into gangster and mafia movies. You're literally never bored and it has damn good lore if you also don't care that much for the romance. The atmosphere, the vibe, the aesthetic and music are all amazing, too. I really liked Mahir's character - yes, he is bad tempered and loses it quickly but it's really interesting to see that. It shows that he cares deeply for his family and loved ones, and that he's not perfect. Gotta love a little villain behavior in protagonists tbh.

On another note, yeah, the drama has its flaws, it's high-key unrealistic - I don't think anyone would give so much and be capable of sacrificing themselves just to save their father, who is old enough and almost on their death bed (Mahir is still kind of young, he has his whole life ahead of him as well!), but I love the concept nevertheless! I'm still gonna give it 10 stars :)

My #1
swtsthng-259-85613018 August 2021
I resisted this one for a while... wasn't big into the mustache or the 70's... but I knew the show had good reviews and people loved Feride & Mahir. So I finally gave it a try and 115 episodes later, it has moved into my number one spot and will be one that I rewatch over and over. Everything was top notch... the writing, the cinematography, and the acting. I didn't think I'd fall for this one, but the passionate and intense love story is one you don't always find. If you are hesitant to watch this show for any reason.... don't be. Watch it. You will not be disappointed.

An outstanding work (Karadayi)
sallly-547004 February 2021
Amazing work as each actor has done justice to the characters. Im really unable to decide is that the director's magical tpuch or the remarkable talent that each actor has. Kinan deserves a diamond medal or award not a golden one and each of the rest actors, starting from Ferideh, ect. A perfect work I think i will never enjoy watching any other drana than karadayi

The best turkish Series i have ever seen

Karadayi earns a perfect 10 out of 10 for its exceptional storytelling, brilliant performances, and high production quality. Kenan Imirzaloglu's portrayal of Mahir is outstanding, navigating a compelling narrative filled with suspense and unexpected twists. The chemistry between Imirzaloglu and Bergüzar Korel, who plays Feride, is captivating. The character development is top-notch, with a supporting cast that enhances the series' authenticity. The cinematography beautifully captures Istanbul's charm, and the music score elevates emotional moments. Karadayi masterfully balances drama, crime, and romance, making it a must-watch that sets a new standard for Turkish television.
