The Concert for Bangladesh: The Making of the Film (2005)

*** 1/2 (out of 4)

Fun, ten-minute featurette talks about the making of the concert film and the issues that kept coming up trying to get it all on film. Mix engineers Norm Kinney and Steve Mitchel are joined by director Saul Swimmer as well as Neil Aspinall, Jim Keltner, Jann Wenner, Jim Horn and Chuck Findley as they discuss making the movie. From everyone on the technical side of things it seems getting this concert on film was something they just weren't really prepared for. The best parts of this featurette deal with them talking about how many different people were on the mixes and how difficult it was to separate everything and make it presentable up to George Harrison's standards. There's talk about eight guitars being on one mic, which of course would be a nightmare. There's also some stories about how at times each camera in the building would run out of film at the same time and it's clear that the filmmakers were thankful that there were two shows to take from. Overall this is a pretty good, if way too short, look at the technical side of getting this film into theaters so fans of the film should enjoy hearing these stories. There's nothing ground-breaking here but it's a fun short.
