good stories require heroes or at least antiheroes
nerrdrage15 February 2024
Here we have the story of Christian Dior, who rationalized working for the Nazis, even at a pretty low level of serfdom, because he was supporting his sister and so-far unseen father, and giving what money he could to the Resistance.

The premiere episode made it look like Coco Chanel was going to be the more heroic figure but now she's coming off even worse. She doesn't seem to make a conscious decision to be the pawn of evil people. She just makes no move for it not to happen.

Traditionally in a story, you need someone to root for, at least one character who merits having a story told about them. This character does not need to be a saint. Dexter Morgan, Tony Soprano, Walter White, et al prove that it can be done with antiheroes, and done very well.

But neither Dior nor Chanel even qualify as an antihero. They are just weak people blown by the breeze, this way and that. I'll give it a couple more episodes and see what materializes, but it's not looking good.
