Saul shows sympathy
Tweekums19 November 2012
Warning: Spoilers
After the massacre in Gettysburg Saul goes to a maximum security prison to see terrorist Aileen Morgan to see if she knows the identity of the mystery man Roya met in the previous episode. Aileen claims to know who he is but she has one condition that must be met before she will tell Saul what he needs to know; she wants a room with a view. Unfortunately the prison warden isn't keen to grant Saul's request; clearly he sees the prison as his bailiwick and he won't let an outsider tell him what to do. Saul won't take no for an answer though; he takes it all the way to the attorney general; he just has to hope the information Aileen is offering is accurate and useful. Meanwhile Brody and his family have gone to a fund raiser at the country house of a wealthy party backer. While here Dana comes clean about the accident but rather than wanting to do the right thing Vice President Walden and his wife just want to hush everything up; Brody is willing to take Dana to talk to the police but when he gets there he finds Carrie waiting for him; what she says will have serious implications for Dana and her father.

After the surprising action in the previous episode it won't come as much of a shock to find this instalment is more restrained. That doesn't mean there is no drama though; the scenes between Saul and Aileen are nicely tense as we can't tell if she is just playing him or if she genuinely wants to help; Mandy Patinkin and Marin Ireland put in fine performances in their scenes together. The scenes at the fund raiser are good too; Damian Lewis does a fine job portraying the awkwardness Brody feels in the situation. The various people's reaction to Dana's confession was hardly a surprise but it did advance the plot by driving a wedge between Brody and the Vice President that will no doubt effect later episodes.

Clear and Unclear--my theme, for "The Clearing"
talksallabout-426-53634514 November 2012
Warning: Spoilers
It is clear that a terrorist attack is coming, but when and where and what is still as unclear as ever. Roya intercepts Brody as he is jogging in the park and tells him "it's close." And that is all he, the CIA, and we the viewers, know. ...

Carrie meets with Mike. She once again tries to make it clear to him that he must cease and desist his investigation into the death of Tom Walker. She tells him is too emotional because of his involvement with Jess, Brody's wife. She tells him the best thing he can do for himself and for Jess is to stay away from her. Will Mike take this advice? I tend to doubt it. ...

Another thing is clear. Brody is under a lot of stress. He has to constantly lie. Lie to Jess. Lie to Walden. Lie to Roya. Carrie may be the one person in his life that he does not have to lie to. He tells Carrie about his conversation with Owen. He feels a lot of guilt because he is not the man that Owen is. He says, "Owen believes that I am like him. That guy is the man I could have been if I hadn't lost myself." The lies and guilt are getting to Brody.

Carrie takes his hand. They look at each other for a long time. Then they are swept up into a kiss. It's not clear who "swept" first. It appears it is simultaneous. Brody is unclear about whether he can trust Carrie. He asks, "Is this for real? Are you just handling me? Carrie replies, "Brody, I don't know. I don't want you to feel used." Brody answers, "I feel used and lied to. I also feel good. Two minutes with you and I feel good. How do you pull that off? More kisses and Brody leaves. It is clear that both Brody and Carrie are unclear about their relationship....
