The Russell Murders
This terrible crime is usually alluded to as the Chillenden Murders, because it was committed near Chillenden, Kent. The documentary itself – one of a series – includes dramatisations, though not of the actual crime, and interviews with some of the major players including Dr Shaun Russell and the detective in charge of the investigation.
For pragmatic reasons it glosses over the non-evidence against the man convicted twice of the murders of Dr Lin Russell and her youngest daughter. Michael Stone has now been behind bars for over a decade and a a half on the word of a drug addict and habitual liar who claims he shouted a confession through a prison wall. If you find that a tough one to swallow, once when he was arrested, the same man tried to phone his own mother. Who was dead!
A lot more could be said in this vein, but although this case is regarded by many as a miscarriage of justice and by some as one of the worst in English criminal history ever, this documentary is not about Michael Stone but about how a terrible crime with no rational motive destroyed a family.
Shortly after the murders, widower Shaun Russell relocated to Wales where he lives to this day; his surviving daughter has made a recovery that is nothing less than miraculous. If she suffered permanent brain damage, it does not show in her work. Having graduated with a BA in graphic design she is now a successful commercial artist as well as an ambassador for the Born Free Foundation.
