FACE YOUR FATE
nogodnomasters14 April 2019
Warning: Spoilers
The film gives you the feeling it is the end of the world, but that was just a frequent overuse of the production company over promoting itself during the opening. We then see a bunch of old Nazi stuff and two bad female actors pretending to sob loudly while dad injects himself in the chest. We them switch to 10 years later and to color film as we poorly build the character of a few college girls, who eventually drive into the desert, the same desert where our Nazi girls live. If you read the back of the DVD, its says the rest.

The film was low budget and bad. It switches back to black and white for no particular reason. The acting was sad, dialogue poor, and plot not well developed. The zombies were boring.

Guide: F-bomb, grope, brief nudity.

Call me predictable, but I prefer my gore to be in colour.
BA_Harrison20 January 2015
With its heady concoction of lesbians, Nazis and zombies, Blood Soaked certainly has many of the ingredients necessary for a delightfully deranged cult movie in the making; sadly, a poor directorial decision midway means that the film never really fulfils its potential.

Things start off promisingly enough, with a gritty prologue that introduces its psychotic Nazi sisters Sadie (Laina Grendle) and Katie (Hayley Derryberry), before cutting to pretty freshman Piper (Heather Wilder) as she settles into her new college, quickly making a new friend in sexy sophomore Ashley. Director Peter Grendle lets the action flow at a relaxed pace, allowing the audience to get to know and like the protagonists. We don't mind, since we've already seen what's in store for them, and it looks like it'll be worth the wait.

Before long, Ashley reveals that she is a lesbian and convinces Piper that a little sexual experimentation might be just what she needs to help her get over her boyfriend, who is miles away, back in her home town. As Piper and Ashley canoodle in the desert, who should turn up but sickos Sadie and Katie, whose fascist sensibilities are offended by what they see. The scene is now set for some seriously exploitative action...

And then BAM!, just as the plot is about to head into much crazier and bloodier territory, with the abduction of Piper and the introduction of a zombie army, the fun is totally sucked out of proceedings with the inexplicable use of black and white cinematography, in conjunction with shaky hand-held camera-work and inadequate lighting, which turns the rest of the film into a muddled, murky, monochromatic mess. From this point on, it's hard to see what's happening, and even harder to care, the excess of shaky-cam and black blood making several potentially gruesome scenes extremely underwhelming.

Fed up with squinting at the screen trying to figure out what was happening, I was glad when the film finally finished—a shame, because, for a while there, I was having a good time.

'Blood Soaked' (Screener Review)
theicon8712 July 2014
Warning: Spoilers
If I said it once, I said it a thousand times. Whenever I dislike a movie, I tend to try and see the positive, and elaborate on what I did like about it. That way my reviews aren't rants. However, every once in a while a movie comes along that I just see nothing in. And unfortunately, Blood Soaked falls into that category.

Hitting DVD and VOD June 17th, Blood Soaked starts off in black and white, and we see young Sadie and Katie holding their dying father and crying. Then it cuts to 10 years later, and the picture gains color. We see a college freshman move into her dorm with help from her complaining mother. Soon after, she meets up with her roommate, and they develop a relationship quickly. While off in the New Mexico desert doing annoying cutesy flirting, the new couple is interrupted by the psychotic sisters we saw ten years ago as children. Now, they're racist Nazi's who have a thing for killing people, and bringing them back from the dead via an injection.

How these two low-grade white trash girls got a hold of something as precious and complicated as a zombie serum, I'll never know. There's a lot about this movie that isn't logical, and will give you a headache thinking too hard on it. It soon becomes a low-budget take on House of a 1000 Corpses, only with out vision or direction. The acting is incredibly weak to top it all of, and all the gore scenes are mostly in black and white, making any bloodshed null and void. The camera angles are wonky, and the steady shots aren't steady at all. It's very shaky, and looks amateur.

It's obvious by watching that it's a low-budget production, but what I'm aggravated by most, is the lack of commitment this feature has. It really doesn't appear to me that anyone on screen was really trying. Their dialogue is terrible, and it's delivered without confidence like it's a school play rehearsal. I'm sorry, but I just can't praise a movie, cast, or crew for making a movie that looks like you just had fun filming the whole time. The music is lackadaisical, and doesn't do anything to help the scenes progress but add a goofy flare. It's just over the top randomness that forgets small details, such as having blood on a knife that was just used to stab someone several times.

After murdering people, the sisters feed them to already existing zombies that they made. Some people they bring back to life, others become food for the undead. It all plays out in a brutal fashion, but it's really hard to buy into considering lack of effects, and the fact that all the good parts are in black and white, saving all the color shots for looking at nothingness in the desert. It just doesn't make sense to me, and the creativity behind Blood Soaked is severely lacking. So you've got a lopsided plot, bad acting, lame dialogue, little-to-no gore in color, and just an overall tiring experience. I won't be watching this again. It tries to end in a twisted Re-Animator-esque way, but it's a little too late. The films lack of inspiration and impact are already cemented by that time.

On the positive side, I hope those involved in this movie who plan on really making a career of acting or filmmaking learn from their mistakes, and try a little harder next time. It be cool to see some of the cast in future projects putting forth a good effort. It's just unlikely, because usually those involved in films like this don't really want to act as their job, they just want to be in a movie. In which case that shows, always.

Could have been SO good but... black and white? Really?
ssmith201029 June 2014
"Blood Soaked" could have been a great cult film, if not for an incomprehensible directing decision.

After an expository introduction, we are introduced to Piper (Heather Wilder) arriving at college with her mother. Piper meets one of the RA's, Ashley (Rachel Corona) and despite the fact that Piper has a boyfriend back home, there is attraction. Finally, during a road trip in the desert, Piper and Ashley give in the nature, share a kiss, and begin to talk about possibly being a couple.

But that's about the end of the good times for our heroines -- enter psychotic sisters Sadie (Laina Grendle) and Katie (Hayley Derryberry) who brutally (and I do mean brutally) attack them. Things go from bad to worse as we end up back at the sisters house -- turns out the sisters are not just psychotic, they are also Nazis and have created a bunch of zombies.

Story-wise, "Blood Soaked" does almost everything right. The lead actresses are great in their roles, the story is nasty and never lets up and the story moves in ways that were unpredictable. However, there is a big problem. Just when the sisters attack, the movie -- for absolutely no reason at all -- changes from bright color to bleary, blurry black and white and stays there the rest of the film. There's no good reason for that --- maybe they saved money by not printing in color? Unfortunately, at the same time they stopped paying for color, they also apparently stopped paying for lighting, because not only is the last 2/3 of the film in black and white, it's so poorly lit that at times there just seems to be a series of gray things on the screen. This is especially bad in scenes where seeing what is happening is important -- for example, Piper is attempting a "MacGyver-style" trick on a phone, but it is impossible to see what she is going. It makes the movie virtually unwatchable. I have no idea what could have possessed the director to do this.

Also, as an aside, in addition to not paying for lighting, he apparently also stopped paying for a tripod. Because at times he flings the camera up and down and side to side... you think found footage films will make you queasy? You ain't seen nothing yet.

But all that would have been forgiven is if weren't for the decision to jettison color in favor of poorly lit fuzzy black and white. If the movie stayed in the crisp, clear color of the first third of the film, this would be an 8 or 9 for me. Now, at best a 5 and it kills me to say this because the story and acting is SO GOOD. I have to assume that the black and white was done in post-editing and can be undone. Maybe the director will read these comments and re-release the film in its original color. We can only hope.

Mindless viewing
Leofwine_draca25 October 2018
Warning: Spoilers
BLOOD SOAKED is the usual vapid indie horror flick with aspirations of being a 'grindhouse' movie, whatever that is. A couple of women go on the usual low key road trip, but soon find themselves held captive by a pair of psycho sisters with a line in raising the dead. Filled with experimental-style black and white inserts and some terrible acting, this is mindless viewing.

Sexy little movie
julietothearnold1 July 2014
We start with a pair of fresh lesbians in college, getting in fights and making out, they're stalked by some cool neo-Nazis who are breeding a zombie army and try to capture the lesbians... I don't want to say more cuz I didn't check the "spoiler" box but I loved loved loved loved this movie. Super stylized, very fun, but can't be taken seriously. Its meant to be like a fun crazy film that should be watched with friends at midnight. And yes, it switches to black and white halfway through but its a cool effect that has an emotional resonance with the story, its not just tacked on. I liked it, it makes things different and adds a dirty grit and grime that other movies just don't have that really reminds me of cool 70s exploitation. Seek this movie out of you know whats good for you, I got my copy from amazon, everyone gets drunk on the commentary track haha

A harrowing descent into hell
Woodyanders20 June 2014
Warning: Spoilers
Bubbly Piper (a winningly perky portrayal by the adorable Heather Wilder) and assertive Ashley (well played by the pretty Rachel Corona) are a lesbian couple who find themselves in a dangerous situation after the run afoul of the sadistic Sadie (aggressively essayed with deliciously nasty go-for-it brio by Laina Grendle) and her equally vicious sister Katie (a chilling turn by Hayley Derryberry) in the remote desert. Writer/director Peter Grendle brings an admirably harsh and uncompromising take-no-prisoners attitude to the bleak premise that delivers loads of startlingly brutal violence, a handy helping of in-your-face graphic gore, and a nightmarish mood that never lets up for a minute once it kicks into gear. Moreover, the story isn't nearly as predictable as one would expect, as a major character meets a shockingly abrupt demise fairly early in the action. Corona and especially Wilder make for extremely personable leads; their strong, natural, and utterly appealing on-screen chemistry makes them easy to root for and care about. Moreover, Grendle has an absolute ball with her juicy role as one remarkably mean and scary psycho bitch. The desolate desert location evokes a powerfully unsettling sense of isolation and vulnerability. Tyler King's crisp cinematography and the rattling score by Latifa Sams further add to the overall punishing impact. However, it's the straightforward simplicity of the taut narrative and the no-holds-barred sensibility which stays fiercely true to itself to the literal bitter end that give this picture its substantial wicked punch. A really rough and upsetting item.

Seriously great film
nicolebigbrown9 July 2014
I harbor a lot of passion for films that break molds and try new things, and BLOOD SOAKED is among an upper echelon of independent horror movies that take no prisoners and show you something you've never seen before, like it or not. In this case, you'll like it.

The plot treks through a relatively easy going first day of college for our rather attractive heroine Piper (played by Heather Wilder). She's going to art school and meets up with a standard issue art school crowd (pretentious, weird, self-absorbed, etc.) including the equally attractive and very lesbian Ashley (played by Rachel Corona). They hang out, go to a party, and Piper ends up cheating on her six-pack of a boyfriend back home and makes out with Ashley in a scene that is both exploitative and sweet at the same time.

Then, all of it goes wonderfully downhill. The new lesbian couple is ambushed by two insane neo-Nazi homophobic zombie breeding sisters, played incredibly well by the large chested Laina Grendle and the not-so-well-endowed-but-equally-easy-on-the-eyes Hayley Derryberry. Derryberry you will recognize from the horrid RABID LOVE from earlier this year, but do yourself a favor and ignore that performance (and film) completely, because this redefines her psycho persona.

Beyond that, I can't say anything more as I will get into an incredible amount of spoilers. But that's one of the things that sets this film apart from the standard issue indie dreck we all have to wade through. It's a brisk 70-something minute journey through hell for the nubile Piper that is a constant barrage of curveball after curveball of plot twists, bold cinematography moves, and seamless set design.

Many special things happen in this movie, I can't go into them all for sake of spoilers, but its main purpose is to have fun. Turn your brain off, crack a beer, enjoy the insane and illogical plot, and experience some camera moves and edits that amplify the off the wall experience. There is never a dull moment, it never takes time to breathe, and has its roots deeply planted in American grindhouse filmmaking. Not the way DEAR GOD NO did, with goofy subtext and stupid in your face delivery of ridiculous element after ridiculous element, but with a subtle seriousness that allows you to enjoy the relationships, get invested in characters, and then have a laugh as they die at the same time. Its akin to the tone of the first EVIL DEAD, where its all delivered without a flinch or a wink to the audience, yet tonally it's a straight up comedy. This kind of mixture of comedic and horrific elements is something that's constantly attempted, but rarely executed this well.

As for the DVD, the extras are worth it and include the original short film BLOOD SOAKED was based on, two commentaries (one of which includes Wilder and Grendle getting drunk), an (again drunk) introduction, and some trailers.

All in all, this is another hit for what may be becoming my favorite company, Wild Eye Releasing. 10 out of 10 stars.

Nasty little horror film
Tryst466612 July 2014
Truly enjoyed this movie. It really stands out in a sea of by the numbers DTV horror releases. I get at least 10 in the mail every week, wasn't sure about this one but it makes so many wonderful and downright crazy/bold moves you're really kept on your toes the whole time. A bit of sex, a lot of gore, and a ton of insane grindhouse-style weirdness keep this one in my tops for the year so far.

All special effects are done practical, which is sorely missed in today's cinema. All actors tackle their roles with a seriousness that is rare. Other movies with this subject matter wouldn't typically attack this plot line with a stoic face but this one does. Its not goofy or cheesy, just freaking terrifying. Solid work, I want more.

A diamond in the DTV rough
susandavis35314 July 2014
I had the luck to watch at a friend's house, had no idea what it was, and was really pleasantly surprised.

I went in thinking it was a low budget DTV thing, which my friend often forces down my throat, but this one held something special in it. Really happy to have seen it, and really proud to be able to champion it.

A diamond in a gigantic rough. There's ample gore to keep most folks happy, a few sex scenes to keep more people happy, but what I really liked what was the art behind it. It tries a bunch of weird new things in terms of plot and cinematography that you just don't see everyday. Made it refreshing.

Blood Soaked
spellcaster-124 July 2014
Warning: Spoilers
A freshman named Piper on her first day of college is seduced by an older co-ed and shares a sleepless night in the New Mexico desert partying it up. But this newly formed lesbian couple's first day together is violently interrupted by a pair of orphaned sisters with a taste for kidnapping, torture and the creation of flesh-eating zombies in their underground bunker! As they fight for their lives and attempt escape, the couple uncovers the sister's terrifying plan for a Fourth Reich army of the dead. Now, only the couple's wits and survival skills will save them from this undead Nazi nightmare.

BLOOD SOAKED is properly titled as the blood and sheer brutality in this film is mind boggling. There were several times that I was taken aback by what I'd just witnessed. So kudos must be given there. It seemed as if those involved in the production of this movie made exactly what they wanted to achieve. One aspect that confused me was why does it change from color to black and white mid stream? I think if it would have all been in black and white it would have been much better. I'm not sure if this was due to lack of funds. Being a special effects person myself I personally know showing blood in B&W is much more cost effective and easier to do so I'm hoping this was the case, it just kind of confuses the viewer but the greatness of the story and the attacks by the sisters quickly makes you forget about that and just carry on.

I must admit that for an independent film this one outshines most made and makes for a good creepy ass movie. For the majority of the film the cinematography is done well but at times it's like "whoa, we're watching The Blair Witch Project" with it's shaky camera shots. BLOOD SOAKED Is one that should definitely be played in a dark room to obtain the full creepiness. As for the play up of the movie "lesbians and boobs" I just don't see it. There was one kiss and very few boobs shown, which was fine by me as I despise films trying to ride the soft core porn train to obtain views. But being billed this way was just misleading.

Now it wasn't until I started this film that one of the NAZI sisters was played by Hayley Derryberry. she wasn't billed well and isn't even listed on the IMDb page which is a big shame. In no way am I trying to take anything away from Heather Wilder or Laina Grendle's performances. They were excellent yet I personally felt that Derryberry's performances was the best in the film. She showed the psychosis we're supposed to believe from the girls to the fullest without over doing it. As stated I'm not trying to take anything away from the film it just saddens me when i see a performance as such and the person delivering isn't even credited. But enough of that. BLOOD SOAKED is one hell of a weird, bloody film.
