The conflicts and an artist
AvionPrince1617 December 2022
Warning: Spoilers
I really enjoyed Pentiment. Its pretty original. And remind me a little bit of Disco Elysium but just for the structure of the video game: how narrative is it and the focus on the story. Here we follow an artist who will witness the conflicts of different people in the church and religious people about different problems (taxes, love, relationship and even murder). Yes there will be some murders and we will try to know who did this. And our choices will make the story more engaging and will make us more focus because some choices ( who will be killed for the murder is pretty brutal and we need to choose wisely and also what we did and who we talked to during the time that was free is really important to gather informations and make an opinion. But not all the people will like this game for sure. It have a lot of text to read, need some attention and the gameplay can be repetitive because we just clicked the whole time. But really get into the game even if im not really religious and i didnt understand some of the problems in the church and stuff. But it was a good experience and we can really feel the impact of our choices. And thats a good thing. What i didnt like it was the fact that the game dont have voiceover so sometimes it can get pretty boring and lack of personality. We have only the sound of the atmosphere and the ambience. The murders story is going trough the whole game and that was pretty tense to see and to know if we will be able to catch the killer and reveal his/her crimes

A nice video game if you are patient, like read and more into story choices and gossip. Because after all, the game its just a way to gather infos about people and try to know more but sometimes its enough to make an interesting video game like this one. Pretty original.

A True Masterpiece

A Review of a game set in the Protestant reformation from a reformed pastor!

I did not know what to expect with this game but it blew me away.

First, check out Obsidians YouTube to see how much they put into the set and fonts in the game. They consulted actual historians and other PhDs. The game is art, like actual art!

Also this game was the first game I've ever played with a bibliography in the credits, amazing.

This game is rich in so many ways from the art direction to the history, characters, and story. The plot is thick and very intelligent and it all comes together in a beautiful way. The rpg elements are so fun, especially for a pastor who has had theological education. I knew a lot of the terms and even some of the Greek, Hebrew, and theological words and lingo. But don't let that keep you from it, it was just an added bonus for me, but you do not have to play in a way that makes you learn that, you can be a hedonist pagan if you want.

Here are my positives
  • Art style and font work.

  • history
  • commentary on religion and social classes
  • amazing story and murder mystery plot.

  • the two protagonists are goated for me. Such good character work for a non-voice acted game.

  • the writing
  • the rpg elements
  • the process of investigating and accusing people of murder.

  • this game is a true work of art in every way.

You need to give this game a shot especially if you are a game pass subscriber! If you are unsure wait to make a verdict until you begin investigating the first crime, you will get hooked!

A bit interesting but nothing special

It's just one of dozens of games in recent years that create the illusion that choices affect the story. Pentiment can be extremely boring most of the time. There is too much unnecessary dialog to lengthen the gameplay. You don't know what will affect missions and what won't, so you have to interact with everything. In short, the lack of variety in the gameplay and the lack of options makes it a mediocre game. The only interesting thing about the game is the historical period it takes place in and the extremely cute art design. I endured and finished it for that, but I would never go back and give it a second look. The story is ridiculous anyway. Nothing we do throughout the whole game serves the main story. The game constantly distracts you from the main goal and makes you make irrelevant choices.
