Haitian filmmaker Raoul Peck's last work, the feature documentary Assistance Mortelle (Fatal Assistance), saw a limited theatrical release here in the USA, opening at New York's Film Society of Lincoln Center exclusively, in February. An exposé that offered the world a look at the international community's response and reaction to the devastating 2010 earthquake Haiti suffered, as seen through the eyes of Haitians in Haiti, the 100-minute film (culled from a total of over 500 hours of footage) was shot over 2 years, starting soon after the January 2010 earthquake, through last year. It addresses the reported billions of...

Haitian filmmaker Raoul Peck's latest work, the feature documentary titled Assistance Mortelle (Fatal Assistance), will open at New York's Film Society of Lincoln Center exclusively, starting this Friday, February 28, 2014, for a one-week run only. One only has to tally up all of the “buy this t-shirt/pair of kicks/hamburger and we’ll donate a fiver to the cause” campaigns after the 2010 earthquake in Haiti to know that many businesses used the opportunity to make money off this tragedy by exploiting Westerners’ desire to help. What you may not have known is that too many NGOs and charities work on much the same principle. ...

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has revealed its 276-member-strong class of 2013.
The list, published by The Hollywood Reporter, includes actors, cinematographers, designers, directors, documentarians, executives, film editors, makeup artists and hairstylists, "members-at-large," musicians, producers, PR folks, short filmmakers and animators, sound technicians, visual effects artists, and writers.
Jason Bateman, Rosario Dawson, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Milla Jovovich, Lucy Liu, Jennifer Lopez, Emily Mortimer, Sandra Oh, Jason Schwartzman, and Michael Peña are among the roster of actors, while "The Heat" and "Bridesmaids" helmer Paul Feig made the directors' cut.
"We did not change our criteria at all," says Academy president Hawk Koch of this year's larger-than-usual class. "Yes, this year there is a tremendous amount of women, a tremendous amount of people of color, people from all walks of life. This year, we asked the branches to look at everybody who wasn't in the Academy but who deserved to be.

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced today the 276 members of the entertainment industry invited to join organization. The list includes actors, directors, documentarians, executives, film editors, producers and more. The Academy just added 276 Oscar voters.
That’s 100 more than last year, and part of an easing of a longstanding cap on the number of new members allowed to join the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences each year.
AMPAS usually adds between 130 and 180 new members, replacing those who have quit or passed away. The membership now stands around 6,000.
Jason Bateman, Jennifer Lopez, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Emmanuelle Riva, and Chris Tucker are among the actors who have been invited to join, the organization announced today.
Other interesting additions: the musician Prince, Girls and Tiny Furniture writer/director/actress Lena Dunham,...

A film that's high on my to-see list this year, and which I think will generate some discussion here and elsewhere... Hatian filmmaker Raoul Peck's latest work, a feature documentary titled Assistance Mortelle (or Fatal Assistance in English), which is currently traveling the international film festival circuit, since it's Berlin debut in February. I was informed this morning by the Fatal Assistance team, when I inquired about screenings in the west for Stateside audiences, that the film will next screen at Hot Docs in Canada, on April 27 and 28, and May 5, with Raoul Peck in attendance. And after that, Bay area folks will be able to see it when...

Thanks to Martine Jean, who, once again, translated this interview for me from French to English. Berlinale – Special Program 2013 France, USA, Haiti, Belgium 2012 Regie: Raoul Peck One only has to tally up all of the “buy this t-shirt/pair of kicks/hamburger and we’ll donate a fiver to the cause” campaigns after the 2010 earthquake in Haiti to know that many businesses used the opportunity to make money off this tragedy by exploiting Westerners’ desire to help. What you may not have known is that too many NGOs and charities work on much the same principle. Fatal Assistance (Assistance Mortelle) is Haitian-born director Raoul Peck’s attempt to set the record straight. The feature documentary rebukes the naive assumption that relief efforts are purely altruistic, and shows...
