A brilliant start.

How far would you go to protect one of your kids, would you protect them if you thought they were guilty of murder?

I thought this was an excellent start to this two part drama. Two families have joined together, and naturally all is not well, throw in the murder, and suspicions, and you have problems.

Who killed Lorraine? Plenty of suspects for us to consider at this early stage.

Wonderful acting by all, Clunes, Norris and McGann all excellent.

I get a Broadchurch vibe early on here, bit sure if anyone else feels it too?

Loved it, 9/10.

A Mother's Son is a psychological thriller that asks the question. What if you son has committed a brutal crime?

Rosie Haleton (Hermione Norris) has a difficult relationship with her ex husband David (Paul McGann). She is now married to a widower Ben (Martin Clunes) and has two stepchildren. She also has two children of her own with David.

A teenage schoolgirl is found dead in the woods. Rosie discovers her own son Jamie might be involve somehow. He went to school with the dead girl.

Rosie has seen his blood soaked trainers hidden in the house. Jamie is being bad tempered and also creepy around the house.

Rosie looks into his internet search history and is shocked with the kind of porn he has been looking at.

Rosie confides in David who follows Jamie and is not pleased that he has hooked up with an older more troubled boy.

The first episode has an interesting premise. Jamie could be a suspect or is he just a surly teenager. Low on suspense at least there are other possible suspects. The police on the hunt for the killer and they brought a man in for questioning early on.

A lot could hinge on the concluding episode. Norris is good as the conflicted mother. McGann and Clunes really do not have much to show in the first episode.
