Exquisitely filmed, very well edited journey to Master in the Himalaya
Much as Gilgamesh, heroes in the Bible, a bit of Adam and Eve, David & Goliath, even Jesus, or modern-day Superheros who try or succeed in transcending death, Padma Sambhava, the Precious Guru of the Himalayan regions, is seen on many levels. His story, part historical, part mythical, has been passed down for hundreds of years by mostly illiterate raconteurs.
The photography is, like the landscape, spectacular and starkly beautiful, and the people, telling us directly their heart connection to the Precious Guru are mesmerizing.
The cameo interviews of a wide swath of people from the highest mountains and mesas on earth are touching, moving, tender, and ultimately hopeful.
Western followers of the great icon, memorialized in massive statues and worshiped in remote caves, attempt to bridge Eastern devotion to Western rationalism while fondly holding the myths and stories personally inspiring.
Midevil demon-slaying hero, cultural phenomenon, is suitable for all seasons, according to his devotees.
I could have done without the hillbilly music -it seemed inappropriately jarring - much as I appreciate Jody Stecher, Peter Rowan, and other Buddhist bluegrass musicians.
Aside from the exquisite dances and breathtaking scenery, individual followers of this Buddhist paragon for ancient and modern times offer a glimpse into transcendent worlds both within and without and are a transmission, or teaching, in themselves.
