Film: "Mai..."; Actors: Asha Bhosle, Padmini Kolhapure and Ram Kapoor; Director: Mahesh Kodiyal; Rating: ***1/2 - - teaches you how to value elders.
The mother is a figure that instantly evokes tender thoughts in each of us. Getting singing diva Asha Bhosle to play the mother in "Mai..." was itself a master-stroke. At 80, Ashaji, with all her years of experience as a singer of unlimited range, brings those vocal emotions into visual terms.
Ashaji does tend to under-act or not act at all in the more dramatic moments. But that inability to give a virtuoso performance in the high emotional moments is a part of the singer-turned.

Mumbai, Jan 29: Director Mahesh Kodyal's Hindi film "Mai...", where Asha Bhosle makes her debut as an actress, is releasing Friday. The legendary singer says it was not difficult to make the transition from singing to acting at this stage of her life when she is 80.
"It is a mother's role. I didn't have to act. In fact I think acting is much easier than singing. While acting, you get your emotions broken into several shots before they are conveyed. While singing, all the emotions have to come out in one go in one take. No, I didn't find playing the mother in 'Mai...' too difficult," said Asha.
However, it is a definite 'no'.

New Delhi, Jan 29: No hardcore romance and no rib-tickling humour - the first Friday of February has three offbeat Hindi films releasing in theatres. "Mai...", "David" and "Listen... Amaya" - each film has a different flavour to offer.
However, there is a common thread between "Mai..." and "Listen... Amaya". Both are about relationships.
"Mai...", the acting debut of veteran singer Asha Bhosle, narrates the story of an old desolate mother, who suffers from Alzheimer's and is tossed between her four children.
When her son and two youngest daughters try to run away from taking her responsibility, the eldest daughter Madhu, played by Padmini Kolhapure, takes a stand against the wishes of her husband and tends to her.

Asha Bhosle's acting debut in the film Mai at age 80 has not been difficult for her at all. The director Mahesh Kodiyal who also makes his debut in Mai, explains why. "Ashaji's songs have always been the highest form of emoting. Even while giving playback voice to heroines, she was constantly emoting to pitch-perfection in the songs. The difference was earlier she emoted for other heroines. In Mai, she emoted for herself. I thought I'd have to do a lot of rehearsals with Ashaji to get her familiar with the camera. But she took to the camera like a born actress. Let's not forget her father Pandit Dinanath Mangeshkar was a brilliant actor. In the 1920s and 30s, he'd play both male and female parts, since in those days women were averse to acting." Mahesh remembers when he went for the first reading with Ashaji. "I gave her some...
