L.A. intensity

Agh, that final scene was awful. The image of a devastated Lydia cradling her infant as the paramedics wheel away her only support network. I'll say this for the writers, at least they don't resort to these kinds of gut-punch endings to prop up lesser episodes.

It's a shame about Steele (Derek Ray), but he wasn't going to last. Although the irony of his name is sweet (when the bullets start flying . . . ). And I dunno what happened to Drucker, but the new lady Sarge is a nice change. She doesn't get much, but it's nice to see another strong female presence.

What's really notable about 'Heat' are its comments about the LAPD. There's an episode-stealing scene in which Cooper lays into a judgmental ice cream vendor about how deserving of a break police really are. It's an impassioned (and effective) speech and goes a long way towards engendering goodwill. And on the other hand, there's about burnout cop (Chad Michael Murray) railing against the department for not standing behind officers when the chips are down (under the bus" gets through a lot this season). This isn't a political show, but what it says abut life behind the badge is no laughing matter.

Warning: Spoilers
This episode was such an improvement over the premiere and it was not just the episode as a whole but also the moment I remember the most was the final shot of Lydia holding her young baby while her mother got taken away dead which was so emotional especially for the character who would feel so guilty. The episode did seemed to be all about the guilt of these L.A. guards from John finding the man from the golf club dead in his army suit to Ben and Sammy fighting over the lie told by Mendoza and how it led to the death of a young child which is such a hard thing for me to watch whenever it is shown on screen. The cases were all interesting and seeing Ben and Sammy's relationship since the police academy has not been a good thing as they seem to fight all the time especially in the hospital scene where it's obvious Sammy is the one who really knows what he is doing. Lydia still was the strongest character and lately she has been affected by her baby but it became real when her mother was found dead leaving her alone with a baby knowing she has lost her mother whom she depended on so much lately to deal with the baby.

EPISODE GRADE: A- (MVP: Regina King)
