Gonzaga premiered opening night at the Toronto Brazilian Film Fest this past Thursday. It tells the tale of the famous Brazilian singer Luiz Gonzaga de Nascimento and his rise to fame. The film also contains original pictures and clips from his various performances. The film captures the historical spirit of the times as we follow Luiz's humble beginnings up country in Pernambuco, his stint in the army and his eventual success in Rio de Janeiro. We learn of the troubled relationship he has with his son Luiz Jr. or Gonzaguinha. This is not due to lack of love or affection, but probably due the incredible pressure that the artist comes under trying to promote himself and his lack of any formal training. This is an excellent study of how a man's spirit and desire can propel him to success. Although as in all aspects of life, there is a balancing effect as inter personal relationship problems arise and must be dealt with. A maçã não cai longe do pé!
