A rather strange doc, this. We essentially tag along with the late Alan Rabinowitz of the Panthera Corporation as he investigates the attempts of ultra wealthy businessman Tomy Winata to rehabilitate "man eater" tigers in his own private conservation reserve.
Narrated smoothly by Paul McGann it begins as actually a fairly granular analysis of Winata's operation and Rabinowitz is not uncritical of the scheme which is refreshing. It is a sticky wicket for sure and balancing the rehabilitation of rare but very dangerous creatures with human community safety is not a simple task. More to that - Winata is not a clear-cut figure and the fact it is he entirely that funds this from private wealth seems rather unsustainable. Really, there are no easy answers here - so it's disappointing that the overall conclusions of the documentary are fairly indifferent and it comes down clunkily in the "guess this is fine then" camp.
One of the more odd "investigative journalism lite" style Natural World docs you occasionally get, but Rabinowitz was a nice screen presence, McGann is a great narrator and there is some great tiger footage here - just a shame about the simplistic conclusions.
