Here's the first trailer for Rebirth, a new low-budget film from Netflix that stars The Cabin in The Woods and Dollhouse's Fran Kranz as a guy who gets sucked into the weird world of a cult. According to /Film, it's the first in a series of low-budget (about $2 million...so, relatively low-budget) projects Netflix is financing and developing with filmmakers, so it should be interesting to see what kind of creativity flows from the comparatively small amount of pressure that comes with a small budget and knowing that these filmmakers are backed by a streaming company that believes in their vision. Rebirth is written and directed by Karl Mueller (Mr. Jones), and also stars Harry Hamlin, Pat Healy, Steve Agee, and more.
Here's some especially good news for those of you who are super into this: the movie debuts on Netflix this Friday, so you only have to wait...

Mr. Jones deserves credit for creativity no doubt about it. The crux of the film is genius and inventive and for an hour fans get a seriously atypical found footage offering that chills from time to time. Its the smaller script details and the finale that sputter and completely die. Theres just nowhere to take the story. And if there is Karl Mueller had absolutely no clue where that destination could be found (or hes been doing some amazing drugs and he reached said destination all by himself). Its a shame this one unravels to such a degree. A clich but defined climax would have been a superior option to that offered by the final cuts big reveal. At least we could have put two and two together...

Choosing to live in an isolated cabin in the wilderness for a year in order to work on your relationship sounds like a terrible idea. It becomes an even more terrible idea when you discover that your nearest neighbor happens to be the reclusive, mysterious artist known only as “Mr. Jones.” But photographer Scott (Jon Foster) and his very supportive girlfriend Penny (Sarah Jones) think that living in an isolated cabin next to an artist known for disturbing, sinister sculptures is actually a great opportunity to make a documentary about Mr. Jones and maybe garner some fame in the process.

The creepy new movie Mr. Jones brings a whole new angle to the found footage sub-genre of horror. Recently, writer and director of Mr. Jones, Karl Mueller, sat down with Dread Central to discuss the film.
Mr. Jones (review) is a brilliant looking film, especially on Blu-ray. Mueller talked about how he managed to create such a crisp looking movie. "I’m very pleased with how the look turned out," Mueller said. "Obviously a lot of the credit has to go to my amazing D.P., Mathew Rudenberg. We had a pretty ambitious plan for shooting the movie and not a lot of time to do it in, so Mathew’s ability to move fast but still get it right was absolutely critical. We shot most of the movie on the Arri Alexa, which is an amazing camera. The current wave of digital cameras is particularly useful on horror films...

What's distinct about "Mr. Jones" is that it lengthily utilizes three separate storytelling techniques. The narrative begins with found footage, then segues into documentary before closing with a more conventional structure. Given the sloppiness of Karl Mueller's directorial debut, it feels less like innovation and more like an attempt to cover up shortcomings, as if he had the kernel of an idea and only begrudgingly filled it out. Usually you see this in screenwriting classes during workshop sessions. Rarely does it play out on the screen in front of your eyes. We're introduced to dim would-be filmmaker Scott (Jon Foster) just as he's taking girlfriend Penny (Sarah Jones) to a secluded cabin in the "woods" that pretty much just looks like a desert. Having abandoned his life, Scott eventually notes that he "misses [my] TV" and that the nature documentary he had planned was less than fully formed. This does...

In Mr. Jones, Scott (Jon Foster) is desperate to make a great documentary. That’s why he moved himself and his other half, Penny (Sarah Jones), to a cabin in the secluded wild. They thought they were alone, but they discover a legendary reclusive artist known only as “Mr. Jones” living nearby. It looks like Scott’s found the subject of his documentary. Too bad it could cost his and Penny’s lives…and more.

"Scott is a filmmaker in need of inspiration..." in a film whose very genre is in need of inspiration: found footage horror. The Tff festival guide bills Mr. Jones' writer/director, Karl Mueller, as someone who has "taken the found footage fright film to a new dimension, introducing a completely unique labyrinth of terrors." It's a bold statement, but one I took with a grain of salt. So many horror films have made similar claims, and those films have been liars. When you're sprinting through a herd of cattle, it's hard not to step in the bullshit. And speaking of shit, at first it seemed like we could be in for some of the "same old" variety. The trick to any found footage film is coming...

Scott (Jon Foster) is an aspiring filmmaker with ambitions of making the most beautiful nature documentary the world has ever seen. He has sold his apartment and convinced his girlfriend Penny (Sarah Jones) to move with him to a dream house in the middle of nowhere. With no TV and hardly any cell phone coverage, there should be nothing to distract Scott from his work. Unfortunately, there is also nothing to distract Penny from the cracks forming in their relationship, and Scott's procrastination and increasingly poor decisions like going off his medication are pushing her to the edge. Everything changes, though, after Scott has a chance encounter with a stranger in the woods. Scott discovers the stranger is the enigmatic Mr. Jones, a legendary modern artist who mailed out his frightening scarecrow-like art pieces to complete strangers around the world back in the 1970s. Like Banksy, Mr. Jones isn't really his name,...

The Tribeca Film Festival has a lot of fun with their Midnight movie slate. This year, we've enjoyed the outrageous found footage anthology V/H/S/2 as well as the telekinetic kid tale Dark Touch. So, I went into two other flicks from the Midnight selection with high hopes. Happily, neither Mr. Jones nor Fresh Meat disappointed as each offered its own unique take on after hours terror. Written and directed by first-time filmmaker Karl Mueller, Mr. Jones is an inventive interpretation of the found footage genre that unfolds a wild fantasy story about the cannibalistic nature of art. Penny and Scott (Sarah Jones and Jon Foster) are lovers who have come to a remote cabin so that the latter can kick his inner demons (vaguely established as they may be) while working on a nature documentary. Penny, a professional photographer, puts her life and work on hold for her...
