Armand Assante, Peter O'Toole, Michael Madsen
steveo1228 April 2017
Warning: Spoilers
I've heard over the years that Jerry Lewis is revered in France. Apparently, in Kazakhstan, they revere 80's American crap action movies. Apparently, they study them closely. Somebody got enough money to get some big and small western names, some pretty starlets, a whole bunch of tough looking people to play actors acting in a crap action movie, an arsenal of weapons, blanks and squibs and then set out to deliberately (it can't be an accident) re-create the best of the worst of the 80's drive-in fodder. They even got them a young French Keanu clone. The only reason it's in English is because they dubbed (with the exception of Assante and Madsen) essentially the entire movie and instructed the voice actors to disregard what was on the screen and concentrate on enunciation. They even dub O'Toole for the five minutes he's in it.

Early on, I thought Armand Assante ("Paradise Alley") was going to be big. Here he shows why that never happened. We already know Michael Madsen will say yes to a paycheck. Not that there's anything wrong with that. But it gets worse: all three of these big names signed on for a two picture deal. This is the second. This one is probably better.

On the other hand, if you like 80's crap, this is real good.

That this would end up being Peter O'Toole's last film, that his career would end with three strikes, is an unfortunate illustration of the mundane reality of the glamorous film business.

Boring and long winded
ScottPortals6 July 2017
Calling this an action movie is a stretch since there are only 3 or 4 very short action scenes all under 1 or 2 minutes. For the most part this is a crime/drama with a lot of people sitting around talking. Armand gets the most screen time. Bolo and Don are wasted. Bolo has one short fight where he throws two punches. That's it.

The cinematography is decent which is why I'm giving it 3 stars. Having this many b movie stars in one place should be a treat, but most of these are cameo appearances only. I ended up fast forwarding through the movie in a futile search for the action. One final note: the climax made no sense any way you look at it. These characters are truly stupid. Skip this and go watch Skin Trade instead.

low budget movie
This is one of those low budget movies some of the talking is dubbed, the acting is really bad the CGI computer special effects are bad, there are a few movie errors, i only gave it 4/10 and I think that's being kind had more money been spent on it with some good actors it would have been a good movie

A cheesy B-Movie
PuckerFactor4 April 2017
It's a shame this was Peter O'Toole's last movie. Fortunately he's not in it much. We may have to question his sanity in accepting this role. If your'e a fan of the gold medallion wearing 80's crowd then this badly written cheesy B-Movie is for you. What ever happened to Armand Assante?...this movie is what happened to Armand Assante. All Hollywood producers and directors know Michael Madsen is the kiss-of-death to any movie he's been in since Reservoir Dogs. You'd have to be living in Kazakhstan not to know this...It's bad, really bad.

Peter O'Toole ?
tamsinmccormick10 July 2017
This is the worst film I have ever seen - even worse than Freddy Got Fingered.!! How did they get Peter O'Toole in this as He died in 2013 ? The film has 2016 in the credits ( It is on Netflix )and 2017 on here (Imdb)

I cant see anything to suggest that the film took 3 years or more to make. It looks like a 3 to 4 weeks job !!

ran out of time/money
marsjones23 July 2017
They had a lot of material to work with. It looks like an OK movie ended up on the cutting room floor. The production value was there, the acting and dialogue wasn't great but who cares? It needed at least a few scenes in civilization so the low budget wilderness wouldn't be so obvious. Too many twenty foot high doors being opened by tiny people.

Attempted cultural experiment in hybrid Kazakhstan dark comedy filmcraft . . . maybe?
charles00027 July 2017
This is just . . . strange, surrealistically bad. It's intended to be (I think) some sort Kazakhstan interpretation of cliché action movie vignettes, woven together into a bizarre concoction of what is supposed to be a story, of sorts.

As a sort visual art piece, it does have its moments. Clearly a lot of work and technical effort went into this production, not to mention a budget to make this possible. Perhaps the most interesting aspect of this film is who they managed to get to star in this strange production.

The voice dubbing is beyond comical, but then again, that description summarizes this entire production. Clearly, this is not for everyone, or even that many, but for those looking for a weirdly out of sync, attempted cultural experiment in hybrid Kazakhstan dark comedy filmcraft, this might be your cup of tea . . . maybe.

Rating? OK, 3 stars for effort.

Incoherent Rubbish

Wow, this is so poorly made it approaches "The Room" levels of unintentional hilarity. Highly recommended if you're on the hunt for terrible movies. Otherwise steer well clear. Terrible. 1/10.

watch something else
unkel_andee16 November 2017
Warning: Spoilers
This review may contain spoilers I watched this movie on Netflix and came to IMDb to see if Peter O'Toole was really in the film.He was. I had some high hopes for this movie as it starts out with several b movie action stars sitting around a table. Sadly they are mere cameos and a group of mostly unknowns star in the actual movie. The story seems jumbled and hard to follow the action, what there is of it is mediocre. IMDb seems to connect this movie to another as a re=edited version of that film. Perhaps the original version made sense and was interesting. I found this version to be neither. Most of the actors, including Peter O'Toole are over dubbed. Even the narrator who is supposed to be the lead character(I think) sounds nothing like the on screen voice. I love campy outdated 80's style action flicks. I did not love this.Unless you have no choice watch something else.

Is there an award for worst movie?
Frankki10 May 2017
Warning: Spoilers
I order to qualify for a worst movie award we should start with quality actors. I don't know how they convince Armand Assante and Peter O'Toole to play parts in this. Even aging action stars like Don Wilson and Bolo Yeung should have known to stay clear of this movie. Next, you have to fail at some of the components of a movie. The plot, script, acting, action, special effects, stunts and most any other component of a good film were all disappointing. There were completely pointless cut scenes to their childhood and romance as if building up to something, but went nowhere. I couldn't figure out why the voices were dubbed over the entire film, regardless of who was speaking what language. I rarely find myself wishing I could get my time reimbursed after watching a movie for an hour and a half, but this is definitely one of those times. I will have to admit that Armand made the most of his role. His scenes almost convince you that the movie might go somewhere, but ultimately they only led to more disappointment.

Full of stars
martialartsactor29 March 2017
In our time, there are only few movies which has lots of stars of 80s we can see in action. Seeing Bolo Yeung, Don Wilson, Hiroyuki Tagawa and Armand Assante in one movie was so unique experience. Besides this, film is flowing pretty smoothly and I can easily say director Salamat made a promising movie for his first feature as writer, director and producer. 10 from me.

What can we say about Diamond Cartel? It's just one of those movies you have to see to believe.
tarbosh220008 June 2023
Warning: Spoilers
To the extent that it's possible for a human mind to comprehend it, Diamond Cartel appears to be about a gangster named Mussa (Assante) and another gangster named Khazar (Tagawa), who both want a large diamond. Somehow a boyfriend-girlfriend team in Kazakhstan get the diamond and go on the run. In the meantime, a parade of cameos appear before our eyes, which include such fan favorites as Michael Madsen, Tiny Lister, Bolo Yeung, Olivier Gruner, Don "The Dragon" Wilson, and, of course, Peter O'Toole as Tugboat. In his final film role, of course. Sure, it's an utterly confusing mess, but that's part of the fun...we think.

Get ready for a nutso trip to Kazakhstan if you dare to enter the kooky, wacky, and crazy world of Diamond Cartel. As if the fact that it makes no sense wasn't enough, there's also narration over the top of it, as if that clears anything up. In addition to that, just about everybody in the film is dubbed in a highly amusing manner, the two most noteworthy examples being Don "The Dragon" Wilson and Peter O'Toole. We're not sure why they dubbed The Dragon here. But, then again, we're not sure why they did anything they did.

As fans, we know Wilson's inimitable voice. You could say he has one of the most recognizable voices in DTV action. So when you see him on screen, and this odd, other voice comes out, you can't help but laugh. Same goes for Peter O'Toole. Just how they got O'Toole to be in this oddity is anybody's guess, but when they did, they used someone else's voice, and he sounds a bit like Darth Vader. Like many in the cast of fan favorites, his screen time is very limited.

Speaking of limited screen time, Madsen, Lister, and Gruner - who, by themselves, would make a great cast in their own right - get very minimal roles. All three together probably equal about a minute of screen time, if you can believe that. It's really mere seconds for the bunch. Bolo gets more, including a fight at the end, and he only says one word in the film - "Yo".

There's a section at roughly the halfway mark that runs for about 15-20 minutes where everyone's voices echo. Then it goes away. It makes about as much sense as anything else going on around here. There are ridiculous green screen and other CGI-type effects. People yell while shooting machine guns. Sometimes there are shootouts, blow-ups or fights. Out of all the stars of the film, we get to see Armand Assante the most. He wears several absurd outfits, including a suit with no shirt underneath the jacket. He screams and yells, just as you want him to. At least he dubs his own voice. It would be a real tragedy if he didn't.

What else can we say about Diamond Cartel? It's just one of those movies you have to see to believe. For the cast, plus the nonsense, we would actually recommend it. But just keep in mind you will be puzzled throughout the experience.

A "diamond" that completely fails to sparkle
TheLittleSongbird15 April 2018
With a talented cast (Peter O'Toole was my main reason for seeing this and it was interesting how his final film and role would fare) and with such a good idea for the story, there was an at least decent film somewhere in 'Diamond Cartel'.

An at least decent film that never comes out. 'Diamond Cartel' could have been far better. No, scratch that, it should have been far better. It could have been a diamond in the rough, it would not have mattered so much if it was not quite a gem considering the budget, but it fails to even be that and it completely fails to sparkle.

Lets start with the few good things, being a fair (or try to be) reviewer who tries to see the good things in bad films. The photography and production design are not bad at all, looking generally colourful and slick. Armand Assante also attacks his role with enthusiasm, he is the actor who tries the hardest, is the least poorly used of the actors and is definitely the actor who comes off best.

Regarding Assante though, it is clear that doing something with what he was given was not easy for him in having to work with such limp and unnatural sounding writing, too many far-fetched and on the wrong side of odd moments and an insipidly written character. In his favour, as said, he was clearly giving it a go and he was not completely wasted.

That cannot be said for everybody else, with the rest of the cast looking uncomfortable and miserable in roles that are far too limited in writing and screen time. This is including Don Wilson and Bolo Yeung, have not seen in a while a film that wastes its cast like 'Diamond Cartel' does. It also has to be down there with the worst final films for any talented actor there is, Peter O'Toole deserved much better than this. There were talented actors that went out on career lows but still managed to be the best thing about the film in question (even the only good thing), Boris Karloff comes to mind. O'Toole was nowhere near close to being as lucky, didn't see the need for his involvement with his role being little more than a useless cameo with embarrassing dubbing that robs him of his distinctive speaking voice. The less said about Michael Madsen's phoning in the better.

The dubbing as an overall whole, as has been said before in previous reviews, is terrible to the point of unintentional comedy. It certainly affects the dialogue, what was already a limp and cheesy script has those factors plus the strangeness and stilted-ness multiplied to the maximum. It also makes it difficult to take any of the characters seriously, a big problem when they were not interesting or likeable in the first place with insultingly stupid character behaviours.

Moreover, the story never comes to life and is far too bizarre and far-fetched. The climax is far from spectacular, it was actually ridiculous beyond belief and not buyable or thrilling for a second. The action is clumsy and very deja vu, complete with confused editing at times. The effects are less than special as well, their slapdash look sticking out like a sore thumb.

In summary, a long way from sparkling or a gem. 2/10 Bethany Cox

So this is what a film looks like in Kazakhstan
Leofwine_draca14 October 2017
Warning: Spoilers
DIAMOND CARTEL is one of the worst films I've seen in a while, and I've seen a lot of them. It also happens to be the first film I've seen from Kazakhstan, which doesn't bode too well. This is a messy thriller with barely any kind of plot, just various 'good' and 'bad' characters chasing each other around, before finally coming together for a big shoot-out at the climax. The Kazakh leads are terrible and wooden in the extreme and the whole film has a too-bright look to it, with CGI backdrops throughout; even the main actress looks constantly airbrushed.

Literally the only thing this mess of a movie has going for it is the cast, with lots of old-time faces showing up for cameos. The worst of these is poor old Peter O'Toole, whose swansong this is; his voice is dubbed over in a very insulting way. Michael Madsen shows up for five minutes and Don "The Dragon" Wilson sits at a table alongside Olivier Gruner and Tommy 'Tiny' Lister, perhaps remembering their '90s heydays. Armand Assante chews the scenery horribly as the villain of the piece, while Cary-Hiroyuki Tagawa does his usual thing. Best of all is the great Bolo Yeung, who at least gets one (brief) fight scene. Other than the cameos and the fun ending, this film's terrible, so you have been warned.

Confusing and boring
Wizard-820 May 2018
Before watching this movie, I had never seen a movie made by Kazakhstani filmmakers before. After watching it, I have no desire to see another effort, at least any time in the near future. This movie goes wrong in just about every area you can think of. The only positive things I can about it is that it's decently shot, has (mostly) decent production values for what clearly wasn't a mega budget, and it has a one in a lifetime cast (though most of these well known actors are wasted in very small roles.) However, the movie is for the most part such a mess, it's hard to get any enjoyment out of those positive features. The story is extremely confusing, as if something went terribly wrong when it was translated into English. None of the characters are particularly sympathetic or interesting, with the only interest being how badly a lot of them are dubbed into English. Also, the movie doesn't know what it wants to be. Sometimes it's an action flick, other times it's a suspense thriller, and other times it plays like a very black comedy. With no constant tone, it's hard to keep your mind focused on what's happening, so much so that you'll start to forget the few coherent story details minutes after they unfold.... and you'll forget the entire movie minutes after the end credits start to unfold. I usually love B movies, but this particular one is really bad, even for my low standards.

An incredible cast ruined by not giving them any screen time.
danteasdale45825 April 2020
Warning: Spoilers
Spoilers

With a cast including legends Cary Tagawa (mortal kombat), the amazing Bolo Yeung (bloodsport, double impact, enter the dragon), Tommy Lister (fifth element, Friday), mike Madsen (any Tarantino film pretty much) and Don Wilson (tons of (90s action movies). Armand Assante and Peter o tool are prolly the movies biggest know actors.

This cast is AWESOME. Lemme go on record and say I was so happy to see BOLO Yeung back. Guess what? He has about 5 minutes of screen time. I swear I caught him standing, sleeping in the background.

This movie is basically an Armand Assante fest. He has some of the most screen time. Which is fine, but with such a big supporting cast, why no use them.

They kill off Tommy Lister, Peter o tool and mike madsen with in minutes of them making an appearance. Cary Tagawa is prolly the movies best performance. He's really ruthless but he's only in it for about a third of the movie.

So on to the movie: it try's very hard to be super stylistic and it does succeed sometimes but most of the time it borderlines dumb. The budget is obviously low and it really shows with what the movie sets out to do. The story is passable and with a bigger budget, could have been pretty cool in the hands of a better team. There is a pretty annoying love story thrown in the mix also, which is pretty much just cringe worthy and though to watch at some points.

The cast is really good but underutilized and it's sort of grind house style of goes for would have been so much better if a better team was behind it. I think it's worth a watch, but you prolly won't have any interest in watching it again.

Nothing is what it seems
nogodnomasters15 July 2017
Warning: Spoilers
Russian crime boss Mussa (Armand Assante) and Mr. Lo of Hong Kong make a $30 million dollar diamond deal that gets raided by Aliya, former Casino worker and trained assassin. Ruslan, a former lover and childhood friend of Aliya almost gets killed. As they make their escape, everyone is after them. "Nothing is what it seems" we are told by Aliya who does part of the narration. The film takes place mostly in non-scenic southern Siberia.

The film opens with a lousy teaser and takes most of the film to get back to it. It starts out as a decent grindhouse with appropriate soundtrack, then is ruined by a lengthy Asian style love story. It has some good shoot outs but also a ridiculous car chase scene with 50's style effects for the car ride against the gang that couldn't shoot straight. The last five minutes attempts to make amends for a bad film by creating some idea of being twisty and clever. Peter O'Toole had a very small role near the end which he didn't do well.

Guide: F-word. No sex or nudity.

Diamond Cartel review
JoeytheBrit22 April 2020
Splashy, confusing gangster picture set in Kazakhstan that suffers badly from its director's determination to make the world's coolest movie. It's a mess, no doubt about it, but strangely watchable thanks to its eclectic cast of has-beens and never-wases.
