Watch out -- your'll binge watch!
shannon-julie8 May 2018
Normally, I like to keep my hands busy while I watch tv, but with the subtitles, I found that I had to pay attention... so for 32 episodes (each almost 1 1/2 hrs long) I was captivated and not at all productive. But no worries -- this is a very special show. The symbolism and passion, a complete set of characters that you grow to absolutely love (or hate) and each one gets under your skin. I have a new appreciation for Turkish culture and for Istanbul and I am yearning for more shows like this one. A real treat, and I am soooooo glad I took a chance on something I don't normally watch!

the Turkish beauty and the beast
lonesomedove_8031 December 2012
I was looking forward to this Turkish remake of the class TV show beauty and the beast I did not know what to expect since the original is almost to copy but so far after watching 13 episodes I can say that it is am interesting remake of course the setting story and characters like the original is very fictional and has nothing to do with reality unlike the original the hero is not a beast but rather a disfigured homeless naive guy living in Istanbul tunnels he is fascinated by a rich TV presenter their meeting starts a chain of unpredictable events

the acting is top notch the guy playing subat is very convincing but maybe a little too good looking to play a creepy man but whats really outstanding about the show is the director I have never seen a TV show with such excellent cinematic direction at least not in Turkish shows

the show does have flows mostly with the writing its sometimes way over the top and sometimes cheesy but so was the original

overall worth checking out by fans of the original

Subat--Netflix
mwaceves7 July 2017
I really didn't think I would like this at first---It looked like it would be a mix of Beauty and the Beast with Ninja Turtles. Some of the acting was way over the top, so I thought this might be for a younger audience.

Once I gave it a chance I got completely pulled in to the story. The plot is very complicated, with several plots interwoven. Some are crime stories, some are love stories, and some are about fate, fraternity, loyalty, and betrayal. Also abuse and mental illness. There are medical experiments and a quest for eternal life.

I loved most of the acting. The backstories and character development made me sympathetic for all but the most evil bad guys. Subat and Yagmur especially change a lot as they mature in this story.

No spoiler--but the ending is extraordinary.

Like most of these Turkish shows there is no sex shown but there is a lot of violence.

At times it was obvious that the subtitles had mistakes--especially mixing masculine and feminine pronouns. It made me wonder what else I was missing.

Excellent technique and narratives
calincia28 April 2013
The series is a unique example of the Turkish TV industry. Subat offers a beautiful cinematic experience with over 50 very talented actors and actresses, unforgettable visuals and musical scores. To this date, I'm quite assured that no other Turkish producer and director have been able to achieve such exceptional viewer experience - which makes Subat an absolute benchmark for the upcoming projects. The plot does have sharp and shocking twists and key characters are introduced gradually, which creates continued viewer interest and enthusiasm. Compared to other TV series produced in Turkey, Subat is one of the few that respects the intelligence of the viewer and offers much more than what is presented on the screen if the viewer chooses to analyze the characters and puts the pieces together by himself. I must also add that producing such quality imagery and storyline is not that easy when each episode is approximately 100 minutes long and filmed on a weekly basis.

An overall excellent production that deserves much better recognition, and I hope to see more like this series in the future.

I love Turkish Dramas but I really love this show. So many great characters. Funny, sad, dramatic, love, forgiveness, everything. I wish we had good television like Turkish dramas. I am thankful that Netflix shows so many. I recommend everyone watch this show. I am learning the Turkish language so that I can watch good series and movies like this. Shows like this help me learn the language.

I just discovered this series on Netflix
treymoran-8434414 September 2020
I could not pull myself away from it. Loved the show. I really thought the actor playing Double/Davut did an EXCELLENT job portraying the split personalities. Some of the actors were way over the top but there are so many others that were so very good. Hated to watch the last episode since there are no more coming.

Very creative show with exceptional acting, writing, directing and visuals.
zeta-998326 July 2020
Istanbul is my favorite city in the world. With Covid-19 causing such a disruption, I have been forced to turn to NetFlix for entertainment during this quarantine.

I have watched "Resurrection: Ertugrul" and "The Protector". I enjoyed both.

I respect the work and dedication from the cast, crew and writers to produce this show. I am so impressed with the quality of writing, casting, acting and cinematography. The visuals are impressive.

This is a huge ensemble cast. Even harder to pull off than Game of Thrones. You do not have the special effects. Old fashion quality acting. You relied on solid directing and acting to produce one of the most unique shows I have ever seen. Yes...I get it is a little "campy", but that is the charm.

Each character was so well defined and maintained character. Only very minor breaks...that is impossible to do with a production of this caliber and pace. It had to be brutal some days.

The plot twists, new characters and seamless threading of the story lines was brilliant!!!!

I love the entire ensemble. Each actor/actress delivered their character perfectly. Each of the actors performed so well. I usually lean toward a character or two, but this cast gave you so many options. This show was one of those VERY rare collection of talent is unforgettable.

I do have to give one of the lead actresses a show out. Her portrayal of her primary and her disabled twin was remarkable - Oscar quality. But it was tasteful as well. Hard to do this.

Overall, I give this show a 10. I have never written a review on a topic like this. I actually created a login just to write this review to let the cast and crew know how much I appreciate a the high quality of their work and efforts.

All the best to each of you in this life.

Weird and wonderful!
mcgonaglejoe4 February 2021
I could write reams about this and still not do it justice. During the first 2 episodes, I thought "I'm not going to like this...", but I am now on episode 16 (still only half way), and the episodes are 90m long!

The cast is massive, nearly all of the characters suffer from some form of insanity, and most provide a great deal of background narrative, giving a sense of authenticity. There is some over-acting, but as you watch each episode, this seems to blend naturally, so that it just appears to be genuine aspects of the character being played. The key characters are excellently portrayed, I found myself empathising even with some of the most brutal ones.

I don't know if it is a true representation of Turkish culture, if so, it appears to be pretty violent, with verbal rebukes that would be appropriate in Western society being replaced with physical slaps. There is a lot of fairly graphic violence throughout the series, which adds to the excitement and fits in with the story-line.

The story-line (in the episodes that I have seen so far) fits several sub-plots together while still maintaining logical integrity and continuity. Puzzles are solved, sometimes in a single episode, but more often over several episodes.

The locations are impressive, featuring underground passages and homes, massive engineering structures, lots of derelict industrial scenes, as well as some luxury homes and buildings.

I could be critical on some technical points, there are a few instances when I thought "that would never happen", but if you ignore those and just go with the flow, it doesn't detract from the absorbing and exciting story.

Superior Look Into The Human Soul
bsteve21 September 2018
A unique blend of 360 degrees of emotions ranging from love and sensitivity to cruelty and hatred. Actors are superior in every sense and their portrayals become real. The explitives told by Aziz at the beginning of each episode casts the duality of human nature and conflicts and questions that construct such behavior. A learning experience for the viewer interleaved with tears and fear link humanities best and worst behavior. Had it not been for the sophomoric fighting scenes I would have given the show 10 stars.

Sufism is a state of affairs, it is not taught, it is lived
info-258-2661189 February 2021
The beautiful and the ugly series that I watched with admiration as a child is a wonderful blend of contemporary Turkish mysticism. A series in which the themes of hole, wealth, jealousy, ambition, death philosophy, double personality, love, hate, science fiction and thousands more human feelings and thoughts are wonderfully handled. If you say what else I know If a movie production can make me watch itself twice, I think it is a great production. I watched it twice and I really like the introductory lines of each episode. My second decision-making mechanism that a movie is good is that if I'm trying to find out the names of the film's director and scriptwriters, that work is really successful. If I spent time on it and made a video for youtube, I really liked it. When I looked at Imdb, it surprised me that it got a high number of 8.1 because imdb is a platform where artistic films do not get the votes they deserve because of the fantastic movie voting of adolescents and countries with a population of over 1 billion. This series received very good marks and comments from the foreign audience, especially. You were standing alone in the middle of a deep well. Then you saw that light you have been waiting for for days. Think about the moment you came out of the well and keep patience Don't forget We learned good from evil, life from death ....

I'M ENJOYING THIS AS I HAVE ALL THE TURKISH SHOWS I'VE BEEN WATCHING!
Peanut71399 December 2018
This is very good and you will binge watch once you start. I enjoy the characters and the story-line. This is a good write and long enough for you to not say, "That's all"! I like the long running so I have plenty to watch. I'm enjoying all the crazy people in this show. "THEY ARE CRAZY"!. This show is making me laugh, cry and overall I have know idea where it's going. I like that but I'm still watching and enjoying everything so far. This is a good watch if you want different and all over the place with this series. I am loving the imagination of the Turkish and what they come up with for stories. I'm not having to see nudity and overall sexual scene all throughout the show. Thanks for having excellent scripts so you don't have to fill the show with that. Very good again.

A MUST WATCH SEE

Yagmar is playing the Sabah character
the_doofy25 June 2019
Amazing TV drama mystery series

Very low budget

NOT corrupted by politically correct hollywood, and their predictable plot threads and characters

Issues get answered as the the series goes, U don't just get left out hanging on a limb. A viewer can tell the whole thing was story boarded from the onset, and some Beta/alpha testing group is not dictating outcomes

Melisa Sözen is playing two completely different characters, Amazing performance

THANK YOU Onur Unlu

Can be watched again
aykutciftci17 April 2024
Its subtle messages, detailed scenes, well-thought-out project, especially camera shooting angles, are such that it can compete with many legendary TV series. It is a series with very successful character development. It is quite surprising and deserves to be watched, especially since the characters' lines do not change and they are full of secrets. The sad thing is that such projects do not have 40 episodes, in fact, it could have been longer. These series can be watched again after not watching them for a long time, and they have such structures. I recommend it to those who do not have time to watch it, it is a very suitable series to watch. It may also be in your top 5 TV series.

A bit unique.....
peteramartin20 March 2021
Warning: Spoilers
I wasn't sure quite what to expect with this epic series and, despite still not knowing what to make of it, even after the final episode, I found in a compelling tale.

My only reservations were (1) the very lengthy replays of the previous episodes (which I fast forwarded) and, what I thought, was and unnecessarily number of episodes. For me, the story could have been told in 25 and not lost anything. (2) the slow motion shots which seemed excessive and (3) the totally unconvincing fight scenes.

That seems like a lot of criticism but, as I said, the storyline and most of the performances (especially from Melisa Sözen and Alican Yücesoy, with a special mention for Sermet Yesil) were excellent and my criticisms do not override my enjoyment of 'Subat'.

Subat Turkish Series
verigby14 September 2020
This show is a colossal mess! The writers of this show should be banned from writing. Poor insight! I have stopped watching in Episode 11, the show is the same place as the 1st episode. A waste of my time and energy. Netflix please choose your shows wisely. I would have given a zero (0) if it was there.
