Just before Spartacus & Crassus meet to discuss possible terms, a messenger approaches the rebel army on horseback. During shooting, the horse was much closer to Liam McIntyre than how it appears in the show. At some point during shooting, it accidentally kicked a small stone at Liam's left eye. The stone gouged out a small chunk of Liam's cornea and he could not see with that eye for several days.
When Matellus informs Crassus that Pompey would be named victor against Spartacus, Caesar angrily raises objection only to be silenced by Crassus who agrees to the rise. He tells Caesar that showing support of Pompey would make him their ally. He then states "...we shall be glorious and triumvirate." In Roman history, the First Triumvirate was an alliance between three Consuls: Julius Caesar, Pompey and Marcus Crassus.
In the beginning when Gannicus (Dustin Clare) threatens the slave owner, he says that he is Spartacus. Dustin was actually one of the favored actors in consideration for the lead role of Spartacus during the inception of "Blood & Sand."
Both Crixus and Spartacus were killed by Spears from behind just before they would have killed a Roman commander; Caesar and Crassus. Each of the four men made their marks on History. The rebellion posed a threat to Rome itself which can be said of no other uprising from within the Republic; some believe it to have been so much so, that it indirectly led to the formation of the Roman Empire under Caesar. (Who's patron was none other than Crassus.)
The opening montage where the rebel army leads a campaign of deception, pays subtle homage to the 1960 film "Spartacus." In the opening scene, the rebels attack multiple villas with Spartacus' most trusted leading the charge; all the while shouting "I am Spartacus!" In the 1960 film, there is a scene where Spartacus is asked to be singled out within a large crowd and numerous slaves (save the man himself) stand to shout "I am Spartacus!" This became one of the more memorable scenes in movie history.
