Cycle 1: Short start which is enjoyable and show promise
I sort of binged on this show when I found it – partly because it is easy to do what with it being so short and free to view, but mainly because it was very well made and enjoyable. This first season (or 'cycle' as the show itself terms them) is not the best of the show thus far, but it shows itself as a good idea, with a good grasp of what it wants to do even if it does feel like it is just starting out. Unlike later seasons, 'the guy' is fairly central in these first 3 episodes. He visits a very uptight woman buying for her demanding boss; he visits a man who is in a great new relationship; and he visits a pair of woman who are having mouse problems just before he arrives.
All three of the episodes in this cycle are very short (generally around the 5 minute mark) but they do the job. The characters in each are instantly engaging even if the viewer is outside of the world in which they live. For me I do not smoke at all – maybe a few times many, many years ago, but the show is not really about that so much as using it. Likewise 'the guy' is just an excuse for the series to be in these people's homes. The opening two episodes have style and energy but for me the main one is the third which, although none of them are really strong, it is the one that makes the most of the characters beyond it being a bit of a sketch. It is still that though, but less so.
The production values are very high. The episodes look good, make great use of locations and have great music and style. The writing is good even from here because even within these shorter sketches, we get a good sense of character and lives in these few minutes. A good cycle that is enjoyable for what it is but also offers more to come.
