Filmed over a three week period across four different countries, 'Breaking Spain' tells the story of Liverpool based psych rockers 'Mugstar' as they embark on their first ever, official tour of Europe. Featuring a wide selection of tracks taken from the bands first four albums, the film starts in Liverpool as the band load up the van and set off on what was to become a 6,000 mile journey through France and Portugal down to the southern tip of and Spain.
The film features live concert footage from every single gig of the tour, allowing the viewer to glimpse the variety of venues a tour like this takes in, from the trendy clubs of Barcelona and Madrid, a sixteenth century monastery in Cadiz, to a squat high in the mountains of the Basque region of Spain. It also includes footage from their Paris show at the 'Cantina De Belle ville' where they were joined on stage by ex 'Loop' and 'Godflesh' front man Robert Hampson.
The narrative is taken from individual interviews filmed with the band less than a week after returning to Liverpool and really gives you a sense of who they are and how they really felt during the tour.
The film builds up to their big show at Monkey Week near Cadiz where the band met with fellow performers and personal heroes the legendary 'Hawkind'.
Filmed in the style of a road movie the film takes you on the journey with the band. The way the camera gazes out the window of the van as the countryside rolls by helps get across the miles travelled and the fantastic differences in the landscape they encounter as fields and vineyards change to open plains and deserts.
This is a film not just for rock music lovers, but for anyone interested in the real life rigours of life on the road in southern Europe.
