The song "Worst Brats in Town" is a parody of the song "Worst Pies in London" from the musical Sweeney Todd.
Among the storefronts include "Sondheim's Children's Place" (for Stephen Sondheim), "Schwartz Happy Family Portraits" (for Stephen Schwartz), "Herman's Hummable Tunes" (for Jerry Herman, a nod to Herman winning Best Score for "La Cage aux Folles" at the 1984 Tony Awards over frontrunner Sondheim for "Sunday in the Park with George" and in his acceptance speech claimed the "simple, hummable tune" was still alive on Broadway, which many believed was a dig at Sondheim's polyphonic score for "Sunday", although Herman denied this), "Ebb & Co. Apothecary" (for lyricist Fred Ebb) and "Kander Absinthe Cafe" (for Ebb's songwriting partner composer John Kander).
In the beginning of "Everyone's Gotta Get Naked," the group sings "Flooby wabba noody, Rizzo, Cha-Cha, Doody, Flooby nooby wicky, Zuko 'n Kenickie." Rizzo, Cha-Cha, Doody, Zuko, and Kenickie are characters' names from the musical Grease.
