Bait and switch of the most VILE sort.
roger-gray29 November 2023
This starts out wonderfully if a little naive. It then descends into a nasty piece of Xtian propaganda. I must admit, as Xtian movies go it tries to hide it's missionary (lol pun intended) position under a very serious message of human trafficking and sex slavery, and I will give it 100% for this part of it's agenda. The text at the end is a salutary reminder that slavery is worse now than at any other time in our history as a species, BUT the shifting boundaries of the leads autism and the saccharine denouement leave a nasty taste in the mouth (again pun intended). The first 30minutes of the film was a solid 7, the rest a minus 7!

Thoroughly misguided mish-mash of rom-com, autism, and human trafficking that is a complete mess tonally and thematically
IonicBreezeMachine30 April 2023
Autistic young man Shawn (Jason Trevino) is an engineer for a dating app company living with his grandmother (Jan D'Arcy) and determined to find a woman to be his wife before his grandmother passes, but hasn't had much luck in dating as his idiosyncrasies tend to scare off his dates. Eventually Shawn does find a woman willing to spend more time with him named Violet (Cora Cleary) whom he thinks is an actress when in reality she is a prostitute who is the victim of exploitation and abuse at the hands of her pimp Anton (Michael E. Bell). Over time however Violet finds charm in Shawn beneath his idiosyncrasies.

The Sound of Violet is a romantic dramedy written and directed by Allen Wolf and based off Wolf's novel Hooked. According to Wolf's official website for the film, the story was inspired by his own experiences of ups and downs in the dating world which he then incorporated with exploration of neurodivergent individuals and victims of human trafficking after originally writing the character as an archetype previously seen in other films such as Milk Money and Pretty Woman. I'm sure The Sound of Violet has its heart in the right place, but in execution the final film is a massive mess that feels like someone stapled a Pure Flix rom-com to material from Dateline or 48 Hours.

In terms of the setup for this movie, Shawn isn't all that well written as someone on the autistic spectrum. I can understand the character misreading social cues and situations, but the fact that Shawn doesn't seem to know or understand what a prostitute is doesn't feel like a case of him misreading the situation, it feels like a case of Shawn being written as an idiot for the plot to work. And given that Shawn works for a dating app company you'd think he'd be at least a little aware of the concept as dating apps and other social media have standards and mods addressing that sort of thing so there's no good excuse why Shawn shouldn't know these things even if you want to say it's maybe because of his grandmother sheltering him. I will at least say that Cora Cleary does have some charm as Violet despite the baggage of the role and the rather judgmental attitude the movie takes about her. But when the movie attempts to dive into the ugliness of sexual exploitation and human trafficking it massively clashes with the bubbly airheaded tone of something that feels like it should be playing in the background of your grandmother's house.

I really didn't like this movie and with its awkward subject matter, stilted dialogue, and massive tonal clashes this is probably slightly worse than Milk Money because at least for as stupid as that was it was competently made.

I did not like this at all
jmvscotland29 November 2023
I learned a lesson again today when I saw this movie rated 7.9 on IMDb. So, decided to dig it out to watch it.

Now, first I must say that I don't normally review a movie that I haven't watched all the way thorugh. But, this time, I just couldn't do the full 107 minutes. What I did manage was about 40 minutes of one of the dumbest movies I think i've ever seen.

The plot of the movie is in the IMDb short summary so I don't think I'm contravening IMDb policy on spoilers when I say it's just unimaginable that most of the characters in this silliness appeared to be oblivious to the obvious fact that Violet is a prostitute. They therefore failed to alert the autistic main character, Shawn, to that simple fact. Perhaps he would still have been interested in her had he known what trade she was in, perhaps not. That knowledge might have made for a much shorter and possibly a lot better movie.

I see now that the rating of 7.9 was based on a total of.94 ratings. But, importantly, ony eight people before me bothered to write a review.

I must try to avoid paying to watch a movie simply on the basis of a good over all rating here on IMDb. A rating of 7.9 probably indicates that a movie is great, or at least well worth watching. But, regrettably, as here, not always. This one was rubbish.

JMV.

Time I'll never get back
machar-472412 December 2023
Trying to think of positive things to say about the movie, which is quite difficult.

The low budget, poor caliber acting and dreary storyline made for what you see... a listless film which I failed to get through (20 minutes from the end I had to stop the misery).

Nothing discernible to cling on to - nice idea maybe? Poorly executed, whole thing was very amateurish....noticeable bad sound quality on more than one occasion.

Take all the average 'quirky' love story films and merge them together, here is your end result. Save yourself the trouble and go seek out another film that doesn't rip the life from your body in one sitting.

Warm, witty, and profound

Loved it. I laughed, I cried, and I was challenged to consider autism and human trafficking in ways that were new to me. If there's such a thing as a thought-provoking date night movie, this is it. Well done.

Emotional powerhouse!

A touching and well crafted film that explores the power of the human condition. Pain, isolation, joy and compassion is all on display in this poignant, beautifully told story. A film about hope-it's a soothing balm in these turbulent times!!! Highly recommend!!

Amazing Cast
lanesend30 April 2022
Refreshing new faces creating some excellent craftsplay here. A prostitute, an autistic kid, concerned brother and grandmother, and of course the trafficker. Unfortunately they stereotyped with the black badass pimp, with no other diversity in sight, and went a bit longer than necessary, but beautiful! Seattle shots and excellent acting. Some laugh out loud moments, some tears, surprisingly no! Profanity or overt sexuality. Saw lots of tears in the audience, poignant, and surprisingly believable. Well done, shout out to local Seattleite Kaelon Christopher!

Deeper Expansion of Pretty Woman's Love Tale
castlessaloon29 April 2022
Warning: Spoilers
The film portrayed a unique lens into the lives of someone with autism looking for love and a trafficked young woman who'd lost hope in love. These two lives intertwine and remind us what it's like to be human in uncomfortable circumstances. It took me a short time to feel engaged with the film and its characters, but once they had me, they had me and I enjoyed the journey.

My reference to Pretty Woman touches upon this film's similarities of romance and circumstances. The Sound of Violet goes deeper with layers reminding the viewer of today's trafficking challenges, the uncomfortableness of dating, autism's POV and more importantly, the love that can overcome struggles.

Cora and Cason's performances were moving and tugged at my heart strings. Demonstration of vulnerability and overcoming tremendous obstacles was truly a reminder of the power of human spirit.

It dances with serious topics and is light enough to bring a smile and maybe some tears for nice date night.

Such a beautiful story
jmbowell28 January 2023
I found myself really drawn into this story. It is not the typical characters we see onscreen but they are so human, I couldn't help but find myself rooting for the unconventional love story. I even found empathy for Ruth and Colin, who, I had initially been so upset with. Their love of Shawn can be a bit protective and stifling while simultaneously shining such harsh and unfair light on those around him. They feel they are doing what's best but they just can't see what this is really costing all of them. The story takes the viewer on quite a ride and is unlike anything I can recall seeing. It is rich in character development and story telling, alike. I attribute this to Allen Wolf and his care for these characters. I could see his heart and passion for this story really shine through. I thoroughly enjoyed it and found it refreshing and unlike anything I can remember seeing. A really beautiful, heartfelt film with some talented young actors.

Great Story, Great Cast, Beautiful Settings(Spoiler Alert)
henrygjose30 April 2022
Warning: Spoilers
I love the diversity mix of people and background of people in the story. Between an Autistic individual trying to fall in love, concerned family members, a prostitute, a trafficker/pimp. The actors did great, played their roles very well, specially Cason Thomas who played Shawn the guy with autism. The story caused laughter, crying, some anger towards the pimp or even at a point about "old fashioned judging relatives". The Seattle background sceneries were great (kinda biased being from Seattle. A lot of good messages in the movie. No profanity or visual violence too. A MUST SEE!

Realistic and Hopeful
jlabc30 November 2023
I did not expect to be moved by this movie but it did. Actors were really good. Violet brought a very sensitive and presence when she admitted to being a little different from everyone. I enjoyed the storyline of acceptance, the important subject of traffic of a young woman, and the spectrum of autism in adult male. It was sad and at the same time gives hope that people can be seen as more than what meets the eye. The point of view from a relative who is protective of her young grandson to a support system from unexpected places. The ending was just right. My heart had a tear. I think this teaches life lessons to people.

A great little film with a lot going on
lorichristine-4924714 January 2024
A beautiful tale told in a unique way. I liked the movie and would recommend it to others for a date night or girlfriend time. I like that he hears colors. I met one person who also described tasting colors. It helped me understand the film and the person better. I loved the main character, Shawn does not know that Violet is a prostitute. I enjoyed his take on the things that she does. It has a few bumps that cinematographers would notice, but the general population will not see them. I believe it is a great little film with a lot going on. Have some imagination with the film. You will hear the Sound of Violet too.
