Insightful, near-classic Vespoli look at Lesbian life styles
Innovative in some ways but always seeming effortless, the 5th volume of this Sweetheart Video series is a terrific look at older and younger women exploring different lesbian life styles. I wish filmmaker Dana Vespoli would stick to creating memorable material like this, rather than indulging herself so often in gonzo nonsense.
One innovation worth mentioning concerns the auto driving aspect of this series. Vespoli has designed car-mounted cameras to open out the usually interior-limited sex film onto the open road and we learn in the BTS short subject that some of these driving (plus sex when the car is parked) scenes are shot with the cameramen and director absent, leaving the actresses to direct themselves as 3 carefully placed cameras roll. One Julia Ann/Celeste Star vignette utilizes this technique in very impressive fashion.
Star and her BFF out on a Kerouac cross-country road-trip indulge in some singing and gesticulating in an earlier scene that is only shown in the BTS, footage that exactly foreshadows the style and look of James Corden's famed "Carpool Karaoke" late-night skits, shot three years before he "invented" it. Another brief moment has Vespoli using a front shot of Julia and Celeste in which their shoulder-strap seat belts take on a symbolic overtone -great filmmaking (even without the auteur present).
Story develops four interesting character in typical Vespoli minimalist fashion. Julia Ann is an OBGYN doctor living with Vespoli, latter a struggling screenwriter (how close to home!) suffering through endless rewrites. She's been on a losing streak of rejections from the studios of late, so Julia's the breadwinner.
And she must be very successful delivering babies for the couple to live in the "Immoral Proposal" mansion, immortalized by Nica Nicole with her Sweet Sinner feature of that name starring April O'Neil. When folks aren't driving around, the mansion is shot beautifully as a backdrop to sex.
Julia picks up the pair Celeste and BFF Karlie Montana when they suffer car trouble, and brings them home like a couple of puppy dogs to stay for a few days while repairs are being made. This strains her relationship with Dana, as latter is fed up with Julia treating her in a subservient manner, and of course frisky Karlie makes all sorts of childish noise while Dana is trying to work hard to meet her rewrites deadline.
Sexual pairings are well-sequenced, beginning with loving Julia and Dana, the epitome of mature lesbian lovers, followed by Julia humping Celeste in the backseat (no pun intended), Dana succumbing to pesky Karlie's beauty, and finally Karlie and Celeste celebrating their good fortune in an "Immoral Proposal" mansion bed, both having been initiated into the joys of Sapphic sex by an older woman. Film's coda sees the kids back heading out on the road, while the bickering old folks retire to the comfort of their mansion and the straight life, i.e., as opposed to the beatnik/hobo approach. Both life styles are celebrated in Dana's paean to a Lesbian universe.
For some reason Mile High, parent of Sweetheart Video, dropped this quality series after just one more episode was released back in 2013. A dumb move, and even Nica Nicole only did one more version back in 2012 (oddly enough starring Vespoli) called "Hitchhiking Lesbians" for her ill-fated Girl Candy label.
