Fans of Insomniacs After School will have gotten a secondhand glimpse of Nanao, the city in Ishikawa Prefecture where Makoto Ojiro's series takes place. And anyone who's seen the live-action film will have witnessed the city's annual Seihakusai Festival, during which volunteers and attendees can help pull impressive floats called dekayama. The festival is usually held May 1-5; however, due to the Noto Peninsula Earthquake earlier this year, the traditional event has been postponed. In its place, fans are invited to a support event centered around Insomniacs After School , as part of an effort to raise funds for disaster relief. Exhibitions of artwork from the manga, stills from the anime, and props from the film will all be on display. Ojiro has drawn postcards for the event, which will be handed out to visitors. I am not sure if it has something to do with the release of another Miyazaki film this year, but the whole anime industry actually seems to experience another surge, with the titles of quality coming one after the other. That this level actually applies to series that continue, new ones, based on manga or original, remakes and relaunches, and the streaming ones is probably the most astonishing feat for 2023, in one of the best seasons in anime we have seen lately.
Without further ado, here are the best anime of 2023, in reverse order, in a list that includes titles whose season or the whole series ended in 2022.

Based on the slice-of-life homonymous manga series written and illustrated by Makoto Ojiro presents a rather unusual romance in its premise, but at the same time, is as Japanese as a title could be, particularly in the way it presents the ‘will-they-won't-they' aspect, which is one of the most central in the story.

The story takes place in a small rural city, where Ganta Nakami, a highschool student, is suffering from chronic insomnia, that has led him to a number of issues in his life, particularly a constant crankiness that has made his classmates avoid him for the most part, and a series of dozing-offs that frequently lead to injuries, usually treated by the school nurse, Ms Kurashiki. Raging Grace (2023) by Paris Zarcilla
There's quite a lot to like with “Raging Grace.” Among its brighter aspects is a solid central setup by writer/director Zarcilla that makes for a wholly engaging scenario. The first half explores quite heavily and naturally the desperation Joy feels at keeping her life in order, despite it all crumbling down around her. This ranges from the struggles of finding housing for her and Grace, facing racism and misogynistic abuse for the work she does, and the natural indignation of being a single mother. This gives the new job opportunity with Katharine such a sense of importance for Joy which she can use as a means of escaping this lifestyle only to end up stumbling upon a far more dangerous threat inside Katharine's house which gets uncovered slowly during her employment. This is handled incredibly well for a great start to things. (Don Anelli...

Canada’s Fantasia International Film Festival has announced the opening film of its 27th edition: Pascal Plante’s “Red Rooms,” about a high-profile case of a serial killer and the woman (Juliette Gariépy) obsessed with him.
“It’s a film of enormous emotional force, unbelievably controlled and smart, with a staggering performance from Gariépy. Pascal is one of the greatest talents of his generation in Quebec cinema and among the strongest filmmakers in the country right now,” says festival’s artistic director Mitch Davis.
“In a sense, it’s an unconventionally grim note to open a festival on. It’s a profoundly disturbing film. But I know the audience is going to be left completely breathless by it.”

“Dark rumors about what befell the members of the astronomy club keep people away from the school observatory, and that's what makes it the perfect sanctuary for Nakami and Magari to get some much-needed rest. Unfortunately, the school faculty can't allow its unsanctioned use. But if there were a new astronomy club, maybe these two insomniacs could have a place to call home!” (Viz Media)

Capturing the malaise of insomnia, Makoto Ojiro's “insomniacs After School” transfers the listlessness of both stumbling through one's informative years and sleeplessness into a charming slice-of-life romance. Furthermore, after winning the Mando Kobayashi Manga Grand Prix 2023 and with an upcoming anime adaptation, the series is perfectly poised to be one of the breakaway titles of spring 2023.
In many ways, the title presents a typical love story in the manga format, with two...
