- Bob and Becky Klosterman were a model couple, fit, attractive and well spoken. Wealthy and well connected, Bob, a retired high ranking Navy commander and later shipyard executive, and Becky, a busy homemaker and Navy wife, lived in an upscale Virginia neighborhood. In public, the Klostermans seemed sophisticated and engaging, but privately, Becky suffered and, ultimately feared for her own life.
Bob and Becky met at a Virginian beachfront club in 1974. Robert Klosterman was a handsome 28 year-old naval helicopter pilot back from combat in Vietnam. Rebecca Coffield, 22, an attractive divorced mother of one, swooned over the swaggering fighter pilot.
They soon married and moved to a naval base in Florida. There Bob quickly climbed the Navy career ladder. A Naval Academy graduate, Klosterman flew A-7s, dropped bombs on Libya and led sailors in Desert Shield and Desert Storm. By the early 1990s, the couple relocated to Norfolk, Virginia when the Navy handed Klosterman command of its new nuclear carrier, the John C. Stennis. Bob was aiming for the high flag rank of navy admiral, one of the highest ranking positions within the US Navy Command.
And by his side stood Becky, the ever charming and beautiful Navy wife. Becky threw herself into the duties of an officer's wife, joining the wives clubs and hosting parties. Becky understood the subtle politics behind even the most commonplace Navy ceremonies. Her role grew as her husband's rank increased.
Klosterman pushed his way toward admiral but was never awarded the coveted rank. In 1997, he decided to retire from the Navy and landed an executive position working for Newport News Shipyard.
It was around this time that their marriage began to show signs of strain.
