- In North Carolina, Stephanie Powell-Anderson's convenience store shift ends in bloodshed, as part of a larger pattern of violence plaguing the area. With the assailant at large, the heat is on to make an arrest before he kills again.
- Raleigh, North Carolina, April 10, 2008: Stephanie Powell-Anderson, age 39, a mother of three grown children, arrived to work at the "Wilco-Hess Gas Station and Convenience Store" at 1741 Trawick Road, Raleigh, NC. (The location is now a Speedway Gas Station.) As Stephanie was unlocking the front door, she was ambushed by an armed robber. In his attempt to rob the store's safe, he murdered Stephanie with a gunshot to the chest area. She was discovered by her fiancee, Russell Hewitt, aka Fred Russell Hewitt, who frantically phoned 911. Raleigh Police Department went to work immediately to capture the killer. They ultimately locate the perpetrator by appealing to the public with "wanted" posters. A former girlfriend stepped up and identified the killer. In the end, Armond Devega was arrested on October 24, 2008. His trial did not begin until February 2014. The long delay of over five years was due to the overwhelming amount of evidence that the prosecutors had collected on Devega, all which must be shared, by law, with the defense attorneys in a legal process called "discovery". Devega, now age 32, was found guilty and sentenced to life in prison with no chance of parole for the murder of Stephanie Powell-Anderson. Another 72 years was added to his sentence for the attempted murder of a woman in the Mexico Lindo check-cashing service on Wake Forest Road on September 10, 2008, plus other various crimes and robberies that this dangerous serial criminal had committed.—Suzanne
