A Nadir, Even for This Awful Season
You always know SNL is going to stink if an athlete is hosting. The jokes will be generic, the sketches will fawn over him or her, and the cast will generally phone it in. That was last night with someone called Travis Kelp or whatever. He mugged his way through a bunch of brainless skits with obvious jokes that weren't the least bit funny. But you wouldn't know it from the audience reaction. I don't think they've laughed that loud or that much since the last time some brainless no neck hosted the show.
The closest the show came to laughs was Sarah Sherman's Weekend Update redux, but it was just a rehash of better stuff she's already done. There was some unfunny junk about a White woman standing up an Asian guy so she could sleep with a White guy -- hey, racism is funny, right? This is the second or third time Bowen Yang has agreed to this kind of thing, so he must endorse it on some level. Looks like he's going the Gedde Wattanabe route for representation, and we saw how good that was for Asian men. Sad.
There was something about a dating show that was almost a line for line remake of Amy Poehler's many similar skits, right down to the disgusting blond as the baffling focus.
From the terrible opening sketch to the limp monologue to the uninteresting musical guest -- just a big fail.
