While the fall movie lineup continues to shift due to studios adamantly deciding not to fairly pay the writers and actors responsible for them being in business in the first place, not much has changed when it comes to August. Aside from A24 yanking Julio Torres’ Problemista from its August 4 opening, the rest of the calendar has stayed intact and here are the films that should be on your radar.
13. What Comes Around (Amy Redford; Aug. 4)
One of the most divisive films to premiere at TIFF last year was Amy Redford’s What Comes Around (formerly titled Roost). Led by Grace Van Dien, Summer Phoenix, Jesse Garcia, and Kyle Gallner, the thriller tracked a young love affair that becomes a menacing game of cat-and-mouse where nothing is what it seems. Jared Mobarak said in his review, “What Comes Around is a tricky film to talk about without massive spoilers unless,...

After Rory O’Connor reviewed Kamila Andini’s Before, Now & Then some 18 months ago at Berlinale, where it picked up the Silver Bear for Best Supporting Performance, we’ve been awaiting a U.S. release, which finally comes this month. Set amid the political violence of late-1960s Indonesia, the film follows Nana, the beautiful wife of a wealthy plantation owner whose inner life remains with her deceased first husband, murdered in the civil war a decade prior. A survivor, Nana values her safety and material comforts, but carries out a haunted existence, dreaming of her lost love. Forced to confront her husband’s blatant infidelity, Nana makes an unusual connection with his younger mistress, Ino. The two women, sharing their secrets and desires, discover a newfound freedom and intimacy withheld from them both by the strictures of patriarchal society. Ahead of an August 25 theatrical release from Film Movement, the first trailer has arrived.

With its list of new releases for August 2023, Prime Video is relying on a heaping dose of fun library movies.
The first of the month brings a big influx of worthwhile flicks, including Galaxy Quest, Saw, F9: The Fast Saga, and Jurassic Park (the last two via Amazon’s Freevee free streaming option). Then some other recents hits arrive later on like the appropriately titled Cocaine Bear on Aug. 15 and the Chris Pine-starring Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves on Aug. 25.
August also sees the arrival of a major Amazon Original movie in the form of Red, White & Royal Blue. Based on a New York Times bestselling book, this LGBTQ romance follows a U.S. president’s son and a British prince. Over on the TV side of things, Prime Video subscribers can check out the Sigourney Weaver project The Lost Flowers of Alice Hart on Aug. 4 and Harlan Coben’s Shelter on Aug.

In a random scene of director Vincent Shade’s The Unseen (2023), a character asks another character if he has been able to find the Zodiac Killer. That is more than a clear homage to the iconic David Fincher movie. And the reason is that the director is attempting to pull off something that is cut from the same cloth. Except it just isn’t what he hoped for it to be.
Spoilers Ahead
The whole point of the non-linear narrative format is to elevate the quality of storytelling and essentially make a film more engaging for the audience. This movie uses that just for the sake of looking cool. Everything is so random here, from the acting to the writing to the abrupt changes in tone. For a larger chunk of its runtime, we don’t even get what is really happening. And we don’t really care about it either.

One can observe a growing trend in recent films where a previously ignored aspect in relation to women and their insignificance is taken into consideration and used to change the plot and narrate an impressive story. The insignificance of women, therefore, turns out to be their strength. In “Immerstill,” we had Hannelore Schiller taking her chances to make people aware that women exist despite society considering them unimportant. She wanted society to take up the responsibility for their women. In “Unseen,” we are told through Zenzile Mwale’s life that her insignificance comes of great help to her to reach her beloved husband, irrespective of the murders she commits in her defense.
In “Mrs Undercover,” Anushree Mehta uses the insignificance of Durga (Radhika Apte) to spy on and crack a murder mystery. Durga is reminded by her patriarchal husband (Saheb Chatterjee) that she is just a housewife and knows nothing else.
