The plantation scenes were filmed at the historic Sample-McDougald House in Pompano Beach, Florida.
Yankee Dan's crypt was built by the construction department, on stage but was moved to the Sample-McDougald location for filming. It had a large black tent built over it by the grip department to darken it and allow for it to be filled with smoke for atmosphere.
Although Niki Spiridakos played the ghost Martha Cooley for the close up shots, the ghost was CGI'd in. Niki wore white makeup to make her appear like a ghost.
The special effects department tied a thin piece of fishing line to Jim's golf club and then tugged on it off camera to get it to fall down.
Yankee Dan's skeleton was made of plastic (purchased from an anatomical supplier) and the rotting skin was created by special effects makeup artist Bill McCoy.
The painting of Yankee Dan was done by a Los Angeles-based artist who used the the vision described to him by the writer and show's creator.
