In its meandering way, Almost Friends touches on serious coming-of-age themes. Parental dysfunction, teen pregnancy and emotional trauma are some of the plot points in writer-director Jake Goldberger's third feature (after Don McKay and Life of a King), a comic drama that's sometimes appealingly gentle but more often frustratingly amorphous. There are instances of wit and sensitivity scattered through the screenplay, but they have no cumulative impact amid the lackluster direction and general dearth of urgency.
Though the actors create persuasive moments, there's plenty that's unconvincing in this story of Charlie (Freddie Highmore), a twentysomething who's stuck in neutral and gradually...

Coverage of Isa’s (international sales agents) resumed for The American Film Market. This segment follows leaders and innovation in the world of international film sales and distribution.
Sales veteran and President of 13 Films Tannaz Anisi launched her Los Angeles based distribution and finance company just a year ago at The American Film Market. Her expertise, honest work ethic, and keen sensibilities are widely respected in the industry and have helped her to start 13 Films with strong financial backing.
One year later, Tannaz shares the latest progress on this exciting venture:
I launched 13 Films a year ago, so this Afm marks my one year anniversary. It’s very exciting to see how far the company has come since its inception, as we continue to grow and build a full slate of films.
Given my background as a foreign sales agent, the timing was right to start my own company and I was able to secure strong investors to back my vision.
My aim is to seek cast-driven, commercial films with theatrical potential across all genres. Our eclectic state includes romantic comedies, action films, thrillers and family films.
We’re looking for about eight to ten films a year in pre-sales, peppered with a few finished films.
What is your background in sales?
For the last seven years, I was a freelance sales consultant and had the opportunity to work for some of the leading companies in the business - Voltage Pictures and Sierra/Affinity, to name a few.
Over the years, I developed great relationships and relished being able to work on high profile projects. However, I felt I was ready to make the transition from freelance consultant to having my own company and being able to immerse myself in my own projects.
Once I secured the financial investment, it was time to move forward with full force and determination.
How did you first get involved in the business?
I’ve been in the industry for about 18 years.
My very first job in the industry was working in production actually. I worked for PentAmerica Pictures, which was a partnership between Vittorio Cecchi Gori and Silvio Berlusconi.
Way back when I got the chance to work as an assistant at Afm, I fell in love with foreign sales from the very first moment. Since then, I was determined to succeed in the field and started from the ground up. I sought out the right opportunities to learn and absorb as much possible to reach the level where I’m at today.
My sales background started in television sales – I was fortunate enough to work for some of the bigger independent companies such as Win, Kushner-Locke and 20th Century Fox before moving into film.
What inspires you in your work?
What I love most is the face-to-face interaction with people from all over the world.
It’s truly fascinating and what drives me to continue doing this every day. The world is such a melting pot of different cultures, and being able to constantly meet and do business with buyers from across the globe is very rewarding. There’s never a dull moment.
Please talk about the 13 Films Slate.
We just announced our big, new project - "Voice From The Stone", which is a supernatural thriller starring Emilia Clarke from “Game of Thrones.”
It’s a haunting script produced by Dean Zanuck who also produced "The Road to Perdition". The film is currently shooting in Italy which is very exciting.
I have two other new projects too – an action film called "Extortion", which is a very fun project with Frank Grillo attached and set to start shooting by the end of November.
Another key title for us is the comedy "Loitering With Intent", which was well received at the Tribeca Film Festival this year and stars Sam Rockwell and Marisa Tomei. We showed the film for the first time to buyers here at Afm, and were thrilled with the response. It will be released theatrically in the Us by The Orchard, a Sony Pictures company.

"Wadjda"
What's It About? Wadjda, a 10-year-old girl in Saudi Arabia, desperately wants a bike of her own, and after a bunch of her own money-making schemes fail, she enters her school's Koran memorization contest for the prize money.
Why We're In: Writer/director Haifaa Al Mansour has crafted an excellent movie, but in addition to that, "Wadjda" is the first feature-length film made entirely in Saudi Arabia, and the first film written and directed by a Saudi woman.

“Just keep your eye on the end game — everything will fall into place,” Dennis Haysbert tells Cuba Gooding Jr. from a prison yard in the trailer for “Life of a King.” The independent film, which comes out in 16 theaters, on iTunes, Amazon and on-demand on Friday, tells the real story of Eugene Brown (Gooding Jr.), an ex-con who started a Washington D.C. chess club for underprivileged youth. But the making of the project tells a similarly interesting tale of popular Yahoo sports columnist-turned-screenwriter Dan Wetzel. Also read: NBC and Time Inc. var brightcovevideoid = '3065695027001'; Cuba Gooding Jr. shocked viewers on Thursday's episode of Watch What Happens Live when he stripped off his pants without provocation - though the show's open bar probably helped. The Academy Award-winning actor joined host Andy Cohen and fellow guest Queen Latifah on the Bravo show to talk about his new film Life of a King. The conversation soon transitioned from mild to wild once the guests were presented with free robes. Eager to try on his new gift, Gooding enthusiastically dropped his slacks and wrapped himself in the fluffy present. "I am in robe!" the...

You have seen this story before, ad nausea. A gutsy yet compassionate teacher takes a job working at an inner-city school and inspires a cast of potential addicts and dealers into model students. He or she equips them with the tools to combat the danger in their lives through some sort of reformation, like poetry, sports or a spelling bee. We have seen these tales told on the big and small screens so often that we know their didactic formula by heart. And therein lies the problem. If we know exactly what a story is going to provide, there must be a hook to engage us in the plight of the characters – both the educator and his or her pupils.
There is nothing wrong with watching a group of misfits find purpose and overcome adversity, unless the writer and director does little to differentiate their story from better works that have come before.

ICM Partners has signed Cuba Gooding Jr. No Oscar-winner’s path has been more confounding than that of Gooding. He seemed poised for great things after his performance as the wide receiver opposite Tom Cruise in Cameron Crowe’s Jerry Maguire, followed by his exuberant Oscar acceptance speech. Gooding has been in some decent movies since — Men Of Honor, Pearl Harbor, As Good As It Gets and American Gangster – but it also looked like he went for a lot of easy paydays and squandered his momentum. It also didn’t help that right after all the acclaim Gooding received for his performance as a player who stayed loyal to his sports agent, Gooding ditched his film agent right after, and has bounced like a tennis ball between talent agencies. He comes to ICM from CAA at a time when he has some momentum. He’s currently on Broadway in The Trip To Bountiful...
