A great laugh-out-loud show
Shopaholic352 February 2014
I know critics haven't been very kind with this show but as a viewer I really find it fresh and funny.

The cast is fantastic and the father-daughter relationship between Simon (Williams) and Sydney (Gellar) seems genuine. I feel like this show allows you to see the comedic genius process that happens behind closed doors for Robin Williams. It may feel insane and extreme at times but it comes across as a real workplace.

I think this show will continue for a while as each episode feels new and there will always be a new client for them to base the episode around. It's a really enjoyable show and makes me laugh each week. I will definitely stay tuned.

So much potential, so little realized
zapdude22 September 2014
I rarely notice anything on the old-guard networks, so I was completely unaware that this series even existed. After the unfortunate passing of Robin Williams I learned about The Crazy Ones and watched it.

Robin Williams had a set of characters. These were him. Just like my grandfather, he could call up an appropriate character and bring it into perspective. I'm absolutely certain that every day on the set of The Crazy Ones involved a lot of laughing, a lot of fun, and a LOT of material that couldn't possibly be used on network television. What we got was a mediocre but entertaining show.

Robin Williams as the 63 year old elder agency head is perfect because of these things, they are not faults. He's older, more mature, more experienced, definitely more jaded. The younger ones are learning at his knee, as it should be.

As a requiem for Robin Williams' career, this series is a tragic and amazingly funny summary. They're all there. There's a bit of Mork, a bit of Mrs. Doubtfire, some Adrian Cronauer, you'll recognize the Genie, and the Indian Chief, and more. Yes, Robin's career was stale and he was essentially doing the same shtick as he was doing in the 70s. But it was good. He was fast. He was an amazingly funny man, filled with heart and care. We loved him for it. Maybe the younger generation will never get Robin, but anyone over 30 should have.

If I had left behind the body of work that Robin Williams did, and that included this little unpolished gem, I'm certain I could have left this planet fulfilled. We will miss him.

A good mix
Zubacz4 October 2013
I don't quite understand where the low rating comes from. I thought this show delivered very good comedy. There is some cheesy humour, but there are also great metaphors and references to films. I found a lot of the dialogue to be smart and well written. Robin Williams carries most of the comedic value, as can be expected. It often seems a lot in his scenes is spontaneous, which works out great. Sarah Michelle Gellar does not deliver many laughs on her own, and her acting seems a bit stiff, but then again this demeanor fits her character. The other cast fit well, although it's difficult to get used to Hamish Linklater in a role so different than in Newsroom. Overall, definitely one of the better comedy shows on TV.

Secret Sauce,,, THANK YOU
handplow12328 September 2013
I know this show will not be everybody's cup of tea. That said, I think I'll have another helping! I used to work as a copywriter at a radio station; the crazier we were, the better it was. I worked with people like Simon and Zach as well as Sydney. My 14-year old looked at me and said, "Oh, my gosh, Mom, Simon is YOU!" Sooo, I guess you know who I was in the little equation at work!

I love the relationship between the elder statesman (HA!) -- Simon -- and the young Jedi trainee -- Zach. I love the off-the -cuff repartee. I love how they think on their feet. And I love the fire-rapid dialog.

I want to get to know more about these characters. I want to see them develop.

All I am saying is: Give "Crazy" a Chance....

David E Kelly at his best!
artdumoi26 September 2013
The pilot was really fast paced, the 20 minutes felt like 5 but I already love all the characters. Definitely Ally Mc Beal 2.0. A bunch of Crazy people with a lot of heart. Can't hardly wait to know them a little bit more and to explore their universe. All the actors have great chemistry together especially Robin Williams and Sarah Michelle Gellar. James Wolk was a nice revelation and on top of that Kelly Clarkson was hilarious. Yep, this is great TV. The show has so much potential, I hope the writers will meet my expectations. The next episodes should focus a little bit more on the father / daughter relationship. This is where, IMO, The Crazy Ones could stand out of the crowd and became a nice "dramedy".

Robin Williams' return cut short
SnoopyStyle10 May 2014
Simon Roberts (Robin Williams) is the wild inventive advertising icon and he's working with his organized proper daughter Sydney (Sarah Michelle Gellar). They are still working on their father-daughter relationship. Also working in the firm are the ladies man Zach (James Wolk), the nerdy Andrew (Hamish Linklater), and the flaky assistant Lauren (Amanda Setton).

It's the return of Robin Williams to TV and this role is tailor made for him. He's quite good in this where they allow him that free flowing humor that is his bread and butter. SMG does a good job as his slightly uptight daughter. The supporting cast is all there. However Robin's schtick does wear a little thin as the season went on. They added Brad Garrett late in the season to spice things up. I'm not sure it achieved anything. It got canceled after one full season. I wish the network would give Williams a little more leeway especially since he seems to have the support early on.

Warning: Spoilers
It's sad that this show ended. At least Robin Williams was able to do one more small screen role before he passed away.

Liked it, but would prefer a little Slower pace
alley_m30 September 2013
Warning: Spoilers
I was drawn to this show when I heard it had Robin Williams and Sarah Michelle Gellar (I grew up watching Robin Williams movies and Sarah Michelle Gellar was in the peak of Buffy fame and teen movies when I was a teenager).

I thought it was funny, thought Robin and Sarah work well together, they are both extremely likable and nice to see Hamish Linklater from old Christine in there too.

However it was a little too fast for my liking. I felt like every time I blinked I missed so much. It was only 19 minutes, felt like it would be more enjoyable as maybe an hour show, maybe then I would have had more time to digest jokes and laugh, it just moved so fast, not just dialogue but very quick cuts of shots. Maybe people will like that but I would prefer it just a little slower paced.

I thought it looked really nice aesthetically. Nice and bright lighting, nice production design and the camera was pretty smooth, I'm glad they didn't go the shaky route. What really made me like the show was the heartfelt story. That's what hooked me in, I miss that in a TV show.

So overall I liked it, feel it has a lot of potential, just please slow it down a little so we have more time to digest. Would love to see Sarah and Hamish get a little more screen time and maybe have some time to get to know the characters as well in between the jokes?

Hope they keep up the good work!
OldFashionedYoungster27 September 2013
I decided to watch this show only because of Sarah Michelle Gellar and Robin Williams and didn't have any expectations. But I am very happy with what I got.

The Pilot was over before it started which can mean only one thing-I didn't get bored. It was constantly funny, but not laughing out loud funny,it was subtle and constant.

Robin is his usual self,I think there is a lot of improvising on his behalf and I like it.

Sarah is very natural in her role and I can see her as updated version of Ally McBeal. She has a comedic bone in herself but didn't get much chance in The Pilot to prove herself in that area(although there was a great moment where she is watching some McDonalds executive fall for her colleague's charm and she makes a face,it was so funny). But in every dialogue with Robin there is so much chemistry. Especially where there is only two of them in the scene. It's like they know each other their whole life, just like father and daughter. (Not very usual to see these days on TV)

The rest of the cast will hopefully get to shine in next episodes but I will mention James Wolk's character which is very likable.

I really hope they keep up the good work and get people to know them better.

Enjoying this new series
bookworm476431 October 2013
I don't actually know any of the actors in this except Robin Williams... and I have to be honest and say I was really only interested in it because I read that Josh Groban will be appearing in an episode! I thought it would help to watch the first few episodes to 'set the scene' and have been surprised how much I like it! American comedies don't normally 'do it' for me, and I saw some other much less favourable reviews beforehand but thought I'd still give it a try - I'm glad to say it had me laughing out loud almost straight away! It's manic and risqué, but I think it has promise, and I'm looking forward to watching the remainder of the series (especially Josh!).

You have to be crazy to watch it
jordan224011 October 2013
It's funny how the first few reviews are quite negative and nearly all after are more or less stellar. As for my wife and I, we've watched three episodes and nary a smile has reshaped our lips. Seems like they are basically depending on Williams to ad-lib the funny stuff, and either he's just not that funny anymore or he has nothing to work with. And to make matters worse, they try to ad some sap at the end (as is so common in today's sitcoms) to tug at your heartstrings. How 'bout just going "It's Always Sunny in Philladelphia" people and trying to be nothing more than funny? I realize people have different tastes, so I imagine some do legitimately like this show, but as for my wife and I, we won't be making an effort to watch any more episodes. I suspect there won't be many more anyway.

Williams and Gellar are back on TV and it's looking good again!
Tyrant_Lizard_King26 September 2013
I watched the pilot and had a good time! I thought the writing and acting were way above what we usually get in network television shows. I usually only watch cable weekly series because the writing is smarter and has more depth than the networks. But I thought this show had pretty decent writing. Although, I am almost certain they're letting Robin have a lot of improvisational play room! So far I'm mostly liking everyone in it. I'm only having a slight problem with Amanda Setton's character, the pretty dark-haired assistant. Her repeated "fake" laughs at almost everything Robin's character says could get annoying. As far as the two leads, I think both Robin and Sarah are well-matched. They both seem comfortable and natural in their parts individually and with each other. Robin's always been very quick with his delivery, but Sarah's a smart actress and is keeping up with him fine. (BTW, I didn't see her one-season-only flop last year. But I loved her in BTVS and in all of her movies I've seen.) Besides the comic timing needed in this, it also looks like they'll be dealing with some honest real-life-like touching moments. Sarah has always been brilliant at that and Robin's acting in that department can also be very heartfelt.

I think the show's off to a pretty good start and has a decent shot at some longevity, especially with David E. Kelley as its creator and exec producer. He's had tons of success in the past with shows like Picket Fences, Chicago Hope, The Practice, Ally McBeal, Boston Public and Boston Legal. Not a bad resume! So I wish this one luck and will definitely be tuning in to see where it goes. BTW, I loved Kelly Clarkson's bitchy side in this episode. LOL! I hope they have other known celebrities making cameos in future episodes! It could keep the story lines fresh from week to week, kind of like what they're doing on Web Therapy. (OMG, I just compared a network show to a well-written cable series! Well, maybe it does have a pretty damn good chance!) I gave this pilot a rating of 8/10 stars.

I'm afraid I thought it was awful.
zee-382 October 2013
We began watching with such high hopes and were so disappointed when, 10 minutes in, we couldn't bear to keep watching. It is full of cheesy, obvious, tired jokes. Robin Williams (whom I love) has simply succumbed to being a parody of himself. Why not just have a 20 minute Robin Williams stand-up routine - clearly they thought that putting him in as the star was enough to "make" the show. Sarah Michelle Geller looks lovely but she and Williams have no chemistry as father and daughter. Her comedic input not only falls flat but is also completely overwhelmed by William's shtick. The supporting cast adds nothing to enhance the experience - none of the relationships are properly introduced or embellished so everyone seems completely one dimensional from the get go. I was bored and uncomfortable and far from entertained. I'm so disappointed, I was really looking forward to this.

Fast, smart, and brilliant comedy with very poignant moments.
mail-essence27 September 2013
Robin Williams is finally back to doing what he's always done best -- off-the-cuff riffing on whatever subject you put in front of him. He's brilliant. While America's sense of humor has changed a bit since Mrs. Doubtfire, Williams' ability to turn his incredible sense of humor into a source of drama (it's obvious that his characters' silliness is a response to his own desperation) shows that as an actor, he's gone from silly to serious and come back out the other side with a remarkable ability to showcase the two simultaneously and sensitively.

Sarah Michelle Gellar is perfectly cast in her role, as a foil for Williams. Her ability to (act like she can) see the serious and important sides of absurd and silly situations -- honed to a keen point in Buffy -- is exactly what Williams' character needs to have the truth of his tragicomic situation highlighted.

Also, this is the first show that I've ever seen where the unabashedly promiscuous person (Zach/James Wolk) is a guy -- and it's AWESOME! The way that everyone treats him (the line was something like "Zach, lose a layer. If it goes badly, two.") is perfect. ("To be safe, I'm going to need some meat. Zach! Vaya con queso, amigo!") I realize that Zach is theoretically supposed to be the main character of the show, and honestly, he's *almost* able to hold his own next to Williams and Gellar. Give him a few episodes, and he'll shine. He's pretty and obviously a great actor, and I can't wait to see him blossom.

This show isn't going to appeal to everyone -- it's paced like Scandal, has the emotional volatility of the Newsroom, and the pop culture references of Franklin & Bash. ("Lopez wants to be paid in diamonds, Aidelle is British...and Pink threatened me.") The problem is that it's billed as a zany comedy/Mad Men with Robin Williams, but the truth is that it's actually a very dramatic story hidden beneath zaniness, and a lot of people are going to have a problem with that.

Great Ensemble Comedy
cherylk224 October 2013
I don't agree with the reviewers who said that the actors in this show have no chemistry or that Sarah Michelle Gellar has no knack for comedy. After watching two episodes of this show, I think it's a great ensemble comedy, and I think that Gellar has some incredible comedic moments and works well at times as a "straight man" for Robin Williams. In her first starring role as Buffy, she had a few opportunities to be funny (such as the "Buffy wants beer" episode) that showed her potential. At times, "The Crazy Ones" reminds me of "WKRP in Cincinnati, which is a huge compliment for me. I guess this show isn't for everyone, but it looks like a big hit to me.

How I feel about The Crazy Ones
fuzzybootsf14 November 2013
I love the show. It's kind of like the old times when comedy ruled. Too many reality shows on TV these days because they are cheap to make. I miss the time when there were a lot of comedy's. Robin Williams is very good he would be better if he had more leeway on the show. Too many cop shows also and dramas just not enough laughter in the world these days. A show should make you feel good. Tonight's show was hilarious. I especially like the little add ins at the end of the show. I just wish there was more family comedy on television these days also wouldn't hurt to put something in like Carol Burnett or laugh in on the channel I am sure you would get better ratings. People want to laugh there is too much seriousness in this world. We need laughter.

Highly under-appreciated
ich_david_und_gott8 October 2013
Warning: Spoilers
I registered just to write this review because I think this series is highly under-appreciated. Robin Williams is simply brilliant. He always has a slightly tragic ring to his acting but this is what makes it great. If you like him you will like The Crazy Ones for sure. It's a light- footed heartwarming comedy that makes me smile and sometimes laugh for 20 minutes every week. It makes my week a brighter and happier one. The supporting actors vary between OK and pretty awesome. Sometimes I get the feeling some of them are only there to support Williams and Gellar and their jokes but some of them really are funny beyond that. Especially in episode 2 I had a good laugh when watching the whole duck business. My recommendation: Watch it!

Another show claiming to be in Chicago. This is not Chicago!
tommyz30 October 2013
Another show claiming to be based in Chicago. This show is not filmed in Chicago and it shows. There was a driving scene and nothing looked like Chicago.

People from Chicago don't refer to it as Lake Michigan, it's "The Lake" It drives me nuts when shows do things like this. If you're going to make a show based in Chicago, make an effort. Heck film the show in the town, it will be so much more real and better.

Look at Chicago Fire, CF screams Chicago. They did there homework, and they film there. Makes the show real and you get the feeling of the town.

Aside from the horrible non-Chicago feel, the show is OK. Some of the jokes are funny.

I really like Robin Williams and it's too bad he got caught up in this.

If you're listening "The crazy one's" do a little homework and make the show real.

Only saw the second episode!
Sylviastel5 October 2013
Comic legend Robin Williams has returned to network television in this unlikely sitcom. In this comedy, he plays head of a Chicago advertising agency and his daughter played by Sarah Michelle Gellar. Hamish Linklater plays Andrew Kenneally, one of the associates. Gellar isn't slaying vampires but she has to play the straight daughter role to Robin Williams' antics and comedic performance. Williams always seems to be performing and naturally like on stage. Hamish Linklater is handsome, wonderful, and memorable in his role and I loved him as Christine's younger brother on "The New Adventures of Old Christine." The show still has some things to work on like continuity and character development. Still with Robin Williams, it's hard to see him do wrong. Here, Williams' character is very much the respected veteran and the cast and crew all appear to be in good spirits and having a ball. Welcome back to television, Robin Williams, it's been a long time since your Mork and Mindy days but we'll be happy with you in any role especially comedy that is your gift.

Dull boring dross
Rusticcrayon17 April 2014
Warning: Spoilers
My wife and I were invited to watch a secret screening of a show while we were staying in Las Vegas, which turned out to be an episode of "The Crazy Ones".

I will say straight of the bat that my wife and I are British so this does mean we may not necessarily agree with how Americans may see this show.

Anyway we both watched the episode where the office gets a cold and they have to launch a doll. We had to track how much we laughed or found the script entertaining from 0 - 10, with 0 being get me out of here this is the worst, through to 10 were everyone should be laughing out loud. Anyway after watching the show for what seemed like an age it ended and I realised I hadn't even moved the dial to more that a 4 which was when the credits came up as I felt relief that this show was over. I asked my wife whether I had missed something as I didn't find the show funny in the slightest and the humour was extremely basic, almost virgin on what I might expect my children to watch on a Disney channel show. She also agreed that this was very basic and unoriginal and didn't laugh at all through the show.

This was a real shame as Both my wife and I like Robin Williams, but the script in the show was just so weak not even he could lift it to any level. As for the rest of the characters neither my wife or I can remember any of them as they didn't engage us at all and we really didn't care what happened to them.

The show tries to be clever but approaches things in such a childish manner it fails badly. Unfortunately this show sums up the stereo type view of humour the British have of American sitcoms - childish, basic and predictable As it happens this show hasn't made it to British shores which I guess means at least someone filtered this dross from spreading any further. But maybe this show reflects American culture and we Brits wont get it, after all the our shows, such as the Office, Inbetweeners, Queer as folk etc..... didn't translate well into US series.

Loved it!
cbsodile28 September 2013
I'm a die-hard Robin Williams fan (he's a comedic genius) and now a new fan of this show. I thought it was funny, witty and fast-paced. I wanted it to be an hour long, not 30 minutes! The relationship between Williams and Gellar as father and daughter works; he's nutty and she's not, but they both can change. Even the assistant ("Smell my shampoo") is hilarious. If the next few episodes are as good as the pilot, I'm sold. There were so many quick throw-away lines that we watched it again, and laughed even more. If/when they cast Pam Dawber as SMG's mother, it's perfection! Good supporting cast too, and more star cameos would be great. "The Crazy Ones," a comedy spin-off of "Mad Men," get it? Much less dark and bitter, more milk chocolate than bittersweet. Thanks, David E. Kelly! Loved it!

Great Entertainment
lennart-914-77107110 January 2014
The first two episodes of "The Crazy Ones" were not so good, but after the second one, it gets better and better every week. It has it's really funny moments and bloopers at the end of every episode is also a great idea. My favorite episode so far is "The Face Of A Winner" (1x13), which was laughing-out-loud funny and incredibly original.

Sarah Michelle shines in this series and the cast has great chemistry together, which is kinda hard to find these days on TV. I never was a familiar with Robin Williams work until now, so I was surprised how good actor he is. Really hope "The Crazy Ones" gets another season and keeps up the good work. :)

Embracing the craziness
upyou250919879 November 2013
Warning: Spoilers
I'm not a fan of sit-com, but decided to give it a shot because I absolutely love Sarah Michelle Gellar and I think Robin Williams is a really good actor, so I was curious about it. Now, five episode in and I love it!! The pilot was so funny I watched it five or six times the same day and I couldn't stop laughing. Sarah Michelle Gellar and Robin Williams totally SLAYED it, and even though I'd never seen the rest of the cast before, I liked them straight away. The pilot was something quite refreshing and funny, and I couldn't wait to see more. I gotta say my favorite episodes so far are The Pilot, e3 Bad Dad and e5 She's so European. e3 Bad Dad got me bursting into laughter while I was having lunch, I almost chocked on my spaghetti, because there were a few situations that really reminded me of me. Not gonna say what situations they were, don't want to give you any spoilers, but I don't remember the last time I laughed so hard, so I definitely recommend watching this show. The cast is really good, there's good chemistry on the set, and I love it. One more thing that I like is that there is no annoying laughter in the background: it always just makes me mad when people laugh and I don't find it funny. I can just laugh whenever I want, and trust me, I laugh much more than with any other sit-com. I love that Robin plays a wacky Simon, while Sarah is his down to earth daughter Sydney, who occasionally shows her crazier side. Them two make a great team and I just can't wait to see what crazy things they'll come up with. This show really deserves 10 stars, and many more seasons!

A tour de force by robin Williams
jonas-ua1 November 2013
This is a great and funny show and a true tour the force by robin Williams, but also a strong showing from Sarah Michelle Gellar as well as Hamish Linklater. I see it as a series that may take over from such comedies as HIMYM. This is a series where Robin Williams returns to his comedy to the likes of Patch Adams and flubber. Sarah Michelle gellar proves that she does have some comedy chops even with many really bad movies behind her. Maybe this will be her triumphant return to the spotlight since Buffy. Hamish Linklater should only take such roles as this as he is a perfect fit for them. All in all it just works, and That is why it'll probably get cancelled, because the funniest shows usually do. Watch this if you liked better of Ted, as it may go the same way.

I miss the old Robin Williams
snowbell3828 October 2013
I am so disappointed with this series. I was looking forward to the Robin Williams I grew up watching and was hoping for a series my kids could watch and laugh at. I don't even dare turn on the episodes unless they are not even in the house. It is completely full of inappropriately disgusting sexual innuendo.

I couldn't finish watching the latest episode. I was trying really hard to give it some time but I am done watching. So sorry this was the best they could come up with for Robin Williams. :( Terrible plot, too. The daughter should not have to try and suck up but she be honored for the qualities she can bring.
