Quinn made an off-the-cuff remark, "Poor Joan". Joan of Arc, was a young French teenage girl who was inspired by God to remove the country's English overlords during the Hundred Year War (1337 - 1453). She was captured and burned at the stake in Rouen, some claimed for being a witch. She was revered by the people for fighting alongside them during the conflict and was canonized as a saint in 1920.
At the gathering organized by Genet, the crowd sang the French National Anthem "La Marseillaise". The song glorifies the unity of France and equality of its citizens. The song was inspired by the chaos of the French Revolution (1789-1799) , when in 1792, foreign armies were threatening to invade France to restore Louis XVI to his throne, 516 young Frenchmen answered the call to protect France and as they marched from Marseilles to Paris they sang their favourite war song, (composed by Claude-Joseph Rouget de Lisle). They entered the gates of Paris on July 30,1792 .
Deux Amours translates to "Two Loves" in English. It also refers to the song "Jai Deux Amours" by American expatriate Josephine Baker, played at the beginning of the episode, who thrived in the nightclubs of Paris, despite the color of her skin.
The scene where Isabelle and Laurent were in Genet's Office, to the left of them was an 1830 painting by French artist Eugène Delacroix called "Liberty Leading the People", It commemorates the July Revolution of 1830, which overthrew King Charles X, where people from all walks of life participated in overthrowing an unjust king.
