Tiger Moms, Home Alone

Warning: Spoilers
Holy moly, Fargo Season 5 Episode 2, aka "Trials and Tribulations," just kicked things up a notch, and I'm here for it! First, let's talk about the fantastic Jon Hamm (Roy Tillman) - the dude is killing it in this episode, bringing that A-game charisma.

Roy's out here trying to reset the "natural order of things," Lorraine's side-eye game is on point, getting more suspicious by the minute. It's like watching a game of cat and mouse, but with way higher stakes.

And can we talk about the Easter eggs in this one? "Tiger Moms, Home Alone" is like a treasure hunt for movie buffs. There are nods to different films and callbacks to earlier seasons that make you feel like you're in on some secret cinematic club. Love it!

The tension in this episode is off the charts. It's like the characters are chess pieces, and we're just sitting on the edge of our seats, waiting for the whole board to erupt into a bloodbath. You can practically cut the suspense with a knife.

Once again, Fargo Season 5 proves its pacing game is on fire. No time wasted - straight into the drama, weaving a plot so intricate it's like unwrapping a mystery gift with each episode. The suspense and tension are dialed up to 11, leaving you hungry for more. I'm telling you, each episode is a rollercoaster you don't want to get off.

Maybe Pushing Things Too Far
Hitchcoc27 November 2023
I am so in love with the off-beat, the weird, the overdrawn character, that I am willing to forgive a few shortcomings. The Sheriff is still made of flesh and blood, and he is tempting fate. I'm sure he will be responsible for about thirty deaths, including many of his own people. His deputy is a dangerous Barney Fife. I agree with the Home Alone references, with the traps being set. We know a little more about Dot. She is probably a sociopath, but she makes very good pancakes. The scene at the gas station that ends the second episode is really striking and we know there are several forces at work. All three crazies, and Dot is included, will not shrink so the Coen Brothers are setting things up for a grand encounter. Oh, while the accents are fun, they really aren't very subtle. Maybe they could have pulled them back a bit more.

Supremely acted and intoxicating

Warning: Spoilers
Wow, I can't say I expected anything less but damn, Juno Temple is outstanding and Jon Hamm is his usual spectacular self.

Jon Hamm's Roy Tillman is my kind of Sheriff. Mr. And Mrs. Ja Queen, FBI agents, really have no idea who they are dealing with in Roy but it looks like they will soon be finding out.

I loved Dot's dialogue with Wayne's mom (Jennifer Jason Leigh). Looks like Dot and Roy's marriage makes perfect sense. No wife is Roy's is going to be mild mannered helpless Dot that Wayne thinks she is.

I'm curious now if Roy really knows who Dot really is and was before their marriage. It's clear he is very old fashioned in his beliefs based on what took place with his daughter and son-in-law at the diner.

I am really looking forward to the rest of this season playing out, already i can tell this is going to be excellent and well worth the long layoff from the air.

The stakes are high - fantastic episode

Wow. I love Juno Temple and Jon Hamm, so watching this season and absolutely loving it has been a no-brainer. Episode 5 was amazing. The thriller aspect, the dark comedy, Jennifer Jason Leigh (she's phenomenal), just leaves me on the edge of my seat and wanting more. Also the pacing - quick and straightforward. So well done. The web these writers weave from beginning to end is tense and suspenseful. Jon Hamm can play comedic and dramatic with ease. His acting is incredible. Same can be said for Juno Temple in my opinion, after watching her for 3 seasons in Ted Lasso. She takes you on a totally different journey here. Excellent.

Fargo's Home Alone

Warning: Spoilers
Two episodes into Fargo Season 5 and I can see that Noah Hawley has lost his passion and imagination for writing or at least telling us an interesting story. I was stunned Hawley wrote these episodes. Or did a team of interns write it and he slapped his name on them to give them weight? Season 5 so far has been (and will continue to be based on the "coming up this season" previews) part Home Alone, some MacGyver and add in some Sleeping With the Enemy. It takes from those different premises minus any engaging or charismatic characters and replaces entertaining writing with the usual agenda: Men are bad, mad, weak or goofy, not heroic and not worthy of admiring or respecting. Only the female characters are smart, strong and important. It's all so repetitive, predictable and boring and it's in most shows and movies since about 2016. Jon Hamm is great as always. Here he's the perfect archetype of the toxic, alpha male for Hollywood writers since about 2016, and while everything he says makes common sense and therefore true, he is the villain and will predictably lose in the end. We waited three years for this? And why was a moment of silence given to a little daughter having a "wedgie"? It felt gross and unnecessary. Juno Temple plays a likeable and sympathetic woman on the run, but the bad writing lets her down. The direction and cinematography look great, as per Fargo standards. Season 4 was so bad I had to quit as well and I wasn't the only one. The ratings started at 1.22 million (a 14 percent drop from Season 3) and dropped to 851,000. Day 1, Season 1 fans like myself have abandoned Fargo and Season 5 has no interest in bringing us back.

Warning: Spoilers
We finally got a little glimpse into what Jon Hamm's Roy Tillman character will be and it is....very familiar to villains in the past on Fargo and in premium TV shows.

There is not much originality there, and while I am confident that he can pull off the role, it just feels kind of repetitive here.

They definitely need to beef up the supporting cast in the next season, but this isn't working. That is traditionally a high point of TV shows like this and it just was not so far.

I am hoping that Fargo returns to form, but so far this season is just weird. Juno Temple being the lead certainly is not helping.
