Silly, sexy and entertaining
bazzer-576632 December 2023
Well that was entertaining.

Let's get the serious stuff out of the way. Evie's descent into vampish insanity is very nicely done, with a backstory involving a scarily crazy evangelical Christian father to help explain. And she's sexy, especially in the green outfit (see it, it's a great scene). Who'd've thought it of worthy, goofy Demelza Poldark?

Becka is more ostentatiously hot in her Lycra and crop tops and so is her eye-candy cop hubby Danny (who, as well as being ripped, zooms around on motorbikes and has a shady sideline working for what Line of Duty would call an OCG; basically he is totally implausibly hunky).

Hugh Dennis is satisfyingly toe-curling as the pervert across the street who is obsessed with Becka.

But my favourite character by far is Demelza-hubby Pete's delightful work colleague Sophie, a bubbly bisexual who does all the dangerous investigative stuff like climbing up drainpipes while wimpy Pete just sits in the car waiting for her.

So we've got entertaining characters and sexy sex. But now for the silliness.

Just what is the point of the gangster sub-plot? There is no resolution, it just fizzles out as the net closes in on a couple of corrupt cops who are surely headed for jail.

It's just daft that the two couples (a police constable, a primary school teacher, a local journalist and a yoga instructor) are living in such ridiculously posh houses.

And those houses: the estate is clearly not in Leeds, nor anywhere in the UK (it looks American but is actually in Eindhoven). It's hard to focus on the Yorkshire-accented neighbour-mayhem in the street when all you are thinking is just how incongruous the setting is.

Nice idea to have buff Danny bolstering his action-man credentials by whizzing around on bikes but someone should've told the production team that BMW's are not sexy. They just aren't.

And I laughed out loud when pervert Alan descended from his upstairs creep-lair to be utterly surprised that his disabled wife had a stair lift installed while he was up there. Were the installers silent? Did they glue the apparatus in place? Maybe he was just so engrossed in perving Becka that he simply didn't notice all the drilling and hammering.

But hey, it makes no pretensions to high art and if you don't mind a bit of silliness it's an entertaining, sexy watch.

It starts off strong, however....
mjxcgbqj28 November 2023
I was looking forward to this series and couldn't wait to see what it had to offer due to the exciting trailers. At first I was not disappointed as there was a sizzling buildup- however sub plots began to develop which left me wondering where this was all going. The problem was the sub plots didn't really go anywhere or have anything to to with the main event. Then we had to make some huge leaps in suspension of disbelief as it soon becomes absurd. All in all a good start but it could have been much better if the plot had been focused and not all over the place. So I'm afraid I feel a little disappointed.

I really wanted to like this series
TVwatchr20242 December 2023
I would watch paint dry if it featured Sam Heughan and I am keen to support any movie or series he stars in. He is a solid actor and nice to look at--a good combination in my books.

Equally, Eleanor Tomlinson is great to watch. She brings a breath of fresh air to any role.

Discovering that these two actors were cast together in The Couple Next Door, I noted the date in my calendar and counted down the days. I was excited.

And really, the anticipation was the best part of this series. To me it just didn't strike the right note and some parts of the storyline just didn't work for me. Sometimes a point was laboured (yes, I got that...move on) and other times the characters just, well, didn't stay in character.

I am disappointed. Hopefully Sam will be cast in a role that matches his talent in the future.

Writing this while watching - because I'm boooooored...
S-L-Dee30 November 2023
Aww, I so wanted this to be good!

The trailer looked great, but so far (just started episode 2) it's cheesy, lame and a bit - well, boring.

I love a good Harlan Coben, which I thought this had vibes of, but noooo....

The most entertaining thing so far , is that the neighbour guy bloke looks just like the geezer from Eastenders (don't know his name, just remember him from when my Grandma used to watch it - wish she was here so I could wind her up that it's him 😂) aside from that, yeah, I'm bored....

I'll stick with it, who knows, maybe it's a slow burner... I'll update later if it gets any better 😊

Had SUCH potential...
mmiceli09241 December 2023
Man, with most of the cast this had so much potential. I knew Sam Heughan and Elinor Tomlinson from the few episodes of, "Outlander" that I have seen, so I was on board. Plus the title made it sound intriguing.

Jessica De Gouw is someone I have seen but, she didn't have that instant name recognizability to me, but funnily enough played the best character of this tale.

The story is basically a new couple moves in across the street, from De Gouw and Heughan who are married. They all become closer and "swinging" is in the mix.

Alfred Enoch plays "Pete" who is married to Tomlinson, and boy, is this the worst acting or character briefs he was given with the roll, but by minute seven of a 6 episode series, he is detestable. You couldn't root for him if you tried hard. Props to Hugh Dennis as the creepiest neighbor you've ever come in contact with.

This could been decent at 4 episodes. Still, not bad. It's a good one to watch if you have a lot of laundry to fold.

Good at first but then got annoying
sue-062391 December 2023
Warning: Spoilers
I'm not keen on Eleanor Tomlinson as an actress mainly because her extremely wide, simpering smile gets annoying - and it's often on display here. I knew I'd end up hating her character when she killed the pond fish.

This wife swapping scenario was always going to end in tears and, to be fair, Evie's descent into a kind of madness is well played. Sam Heughan is gorgeous as always but oh how I missed his sexy Scottish accent - there are people from Scotland who live in Yorkshire so surely he could have kept it!

Hugh Dennis is good as a creepy voyeur living across the street.

There are several plot strands running alongside the main sex plot - the big local villain and Danny's involvement, Evie's religious nut father and Danny's secret son - so it does get quite busy at times.

Alfred Enoch gets a bit over-dramatic in the final episode.

So, despite the fact that I didn't like any of the characters, especially Evie, I'd still say it's worth a look!

It's bad, very bad
alexholmes-417297 December 2023
The only reason I don't give this one star is because it's so bad it's almost entertaining.

Slow boring story with terrible acting set in an eternally warm, sunny, tropical location that's apparently in Leeds.

There is one attempt at a Yorkshire accent but Joey Tribiani could do a better job.

It also seemed to be filmed with 80s soap opera effect.

Nothing erotic about it and a very strange time scale, days, weeks and months seem totally interchangeable.

The more I write the more I wonder if this is in fact actually a very clever comedy that I just don't get

Hugh Dennis was the only saving grace but even that was touch and go - non pun intended.

The Art of Making Abysmal Drama is not dead
markfrost-605202 December 2023
Warning: Spoilers
It would impossible to create a worse drama than this. Unbelievable/unlikeable characters; ridiculous plot; terrible conclusion; loose ends galore. It was melodramatic nonsense from start to finish. Why Kate Robbins and Hugh Dennis got involved is a mystery. Their story line was irrelevant and added nothing. There was even an over the top nosey neighbour. Slow motion 90s style sex scenes were ludicrous and absolutely none of it was believable. After 6 episodes the writer (give it up whoever you are) had no idea what to do so just had a shoot out as they couldn't think of what else to do. Please, please do not waste any time watching it as I did. There must be some paint drying that you could watch somewhere.

... don't be thinking of who they played before.. this a very different genre
bjarias1 December 2023
... it's the Danny-Evie-show... from the moment both first meet locking-gazes, there's palpable chemistry between them, which heightened when she learns about his extra-curricular activities... that physical attraction building across early episodes, reaching an intensely sexual crescendo which will leave you extremely hot under the collar... this pair feels heat together not far short of a-'hard-core' quality-variety

... besides the sex, and there's enough of that, there's a very-creepy-neighbor & his unknowing-wife, a school-teacher-story, a cop-caper along with numerous-bad-guys, yoga-time, pregnancies, a-second-family, mothers-fathers in-law, et al ... there's no want for scene-changes

... you might tune in to watch alluring-Tomlinson-Heughan... this guilty-pleasure-series no-doubt is addictive... one critic writing.. "With its intriguing characters, nuanced dynamics and surfeit of narrative dominoes just waiting to topple, Channel 4's latest is a sexy, surprising success - suburbia never looked so much fun" ... another saying.. "The Couple Next Door isn't just about sex, but that strand of the story is by far the most entertaining... interplay between the two couples makes for addictive viewing, most viewers won't be able to look away as that dynamic continues to evolve.. The Couple Next Door won't sweep the board during awards season, but it's an incredibly moreish series that will keep you coming back."

Atrocious
rborealis1 December 2023
It's difficult to imagine a drama with a poorer script, direction and acting.

The storyline was ludicrous in the extreme, the characterisation paper thin and the acting so unconvincing that it would fail a first year student at any drama school. The dialogue was laughably weak.

It's amazing that whoever commissioned the series allowed it to be broadcast as it will damage their reputation and that of all of those involved.

I've tried hard to think of any redeeming features and I've been unable to do so.

It's shameful that this gets broadcast when there are talented writers and directors around.

Surprising, compelling TV
IluvBrary28 November 2023
I actually don't like "sexy thrillers" and I expected this one to be as predictable and boring as many others before. What I didn't expect to see was such a surprising and exciting story and such wonderful acting. The whole cast is incredible and the twist and turns are fantastic. I went into it, believing we would see a nice couple and their creepy neighbours and in a way we did, but in the end it turned to be all upside down. Neither the sweet innocent, the nerd nor the stupid but hot af cop turned out to be what they seemed at the beginning. Only the swinging hippie Becka stayed actually true to herself. I was glued to the TV and many layers, many surprising character developments later I was afraid to start the last episode, because I rooted so much for my favourites and didn't want them hurt. Great show and compliments to all.

Passed the time
peterrichboy30 November 2023
I notice there are some 10/10 reviews here. Well it's Hardly in the same league as Line Of Duty! It's a totally ridiculous story of a middle class suburban neighbourhood, that starts when a young attractive couple move in to one of the houses. They become friends with a couple across the road and this leads to a an affair and it all starts to kick off, especially when a creepy resident from across the road played nicely by Hugh Dennis starts spying on them through a telescope.

There are several other sub plots along the way including corrupt police, diamond smuggling and a local online paper trying to catch a major criminal.

To be fair they cram hell of a lot in these six episodes and it moves along at such a fast pace you don't stop to think how daft the plot is. 6/10.

What a waste of good actors
barbieks841 December 2023
What an absolute waste of good actors.

It was poorly executed, poorly written, poorly directed.

It felt like they didn't want to know which direction to take with the plot. Oh, and what is with the script? Describing it as pedestrian would be an overstatement. It was so flat, so banal, so basic.

I really wanted to like this, I like a few of the actors and other shows they've been in. But this show did them a massive disservice.

I think I read this was adapted from a book? Not sure if that's true but hopefully the book is a better read! :D

Oh- and that location is supposed to be Leeds? Hahahahaha.

Liked it at first but the ending puzzles me

Liked it at first but the ending puzzles me

The first episodes were promising although the many sex scenes dragged on uneccesary long.

There will alwys be characters you dislike but Evie was a bit too much. Her relationship with Pete didn't convince me one bit.

I still enjoyed the series but it went more unrealistic twards the end. And the end, I really need somebody explaing the end!

Spoier alert!----------------

Who fired a rifle when they where in the cottage?

Did Pete shoot himself or did Evie manage that?

What happened to the guy follwing them with the rifle, did Evies dad kill him and why?

The end was really badly writen.

How it SHOULD have ended
scullytryhard7 January 2024
Warning: Spoilers
This series had so much potential but completely blew the ending. The problem was setting up Evie and Pete as the main characters/protagonists, and then destroying their story arch by making them villains in the end.

They hinted at Evie's descent into madness, but the last episode just makes her look calculated and evil, not sick. Shooting Pete after telling him she doesn't love him then crying about it was almost humorous.

I think a better ending would be if there was one last twist; Evie isn't pregnant. She suffers from that syndrome where you want a baby so badly she develops symptoms and the belief she is. Then Pete vows to help her back to sanity and both couples learn valuable lessons and try to repair their marriages.

Technically the couple across the road but...
waynehansford7 December 2023
Warning: Spoilers
Started off with potential... then just became nonsensical. Why would someone move diamonds around in a big van and why would they need a police motorcycle escort? Put them in a glove box of an inconspicuous car mate... and as if an off duty copper can just rock up and collect their police bikes and take them on a jolly... (I won't get into the CCTV located on a random tree on a forest back road!) And then there was the heist to regain the diamonds they lost, for heaven's sake, Dan couldn't have looked more suspicious if he waded in wearing a balaclava... and how easy and convenient was it to get a security van that matched the normal bank security van... it was all effortless. It had all the tension of a discarded thread of Cotton. Then there is Hugh Dennis's character Alan, who added nothing to the plot whatsoever, other than to give the director an opportunity to film him having a five knuckle shuffle in the neighbours bedroom... and omg, Hugh's attempt at playing a stroke victim was as hilarious as watching him on Mock the week, which he is far more suited for. He sounded more like a knackered android than someone with a slurred speech impediment. The bad guys henchmen comes on the scene in his old BMW which stands out like a sore thumb on the quiet suburban street, but the wyle old copper totally misses him across the street (that's probably realistic to be fair LOL)... but the stupidity just goes on and on... the end scene in the forest, people being shot everywhere, Evie's father goes to their lodge to sort out a domestic between his daughter and son in law and rocks up with a shotgun! Why!?!? But lucky he did because the henchman was there with a sniper rifle and then Evie takes the gun off Pete without him feeling it and shoots him point blank range, but he's all good... but then... the police arrive and all the characters are paraded around back in front of the lodge... so the scene is.... They all run deep into the woods, have a shoot out, the the law takes them back to the lodge... and Evie is stood watching Pete (who she just shot) be loaded into an ambulance, and the police woman casually comes to collect her... as she moves slowly back to the police car you can see Dad being marched off and Dan perched on a car with a gun wound to his leg... I mean what the hell... they would have taken them off site immediately. The story falls well short of what it might have achieved, it's a patch work of nonsense, trying to be suspenseful, but it's just laughable. The scenes are poorly devised, often without context, acting was pretty shocking and everything oh so conveniently fell in place.... I could go on about the child dan fathered with another woman, another pointless plot, but you probably get the gist that this simply is not good TV.

Started so well.
julietharper14 December 2023
I thought this series was very well done for the first four episodes. It was interesting and intriguing with a great array of characters and various elements to the drama which ticked along nicely in the first four episodes. The blonde guy Sam was very attractive and Pete was a sweet charismatic person and then by the end of the drama part five and six everything started to fall apart. In that I mean the story, the characters, pretty much everything which is a shame as I believe a better more twisty realistic ending would have made this drama much more memorable and popular than it will be. That's my take on this.

One of the worst dramas I've seen in some time
theskyhighatrist1 December 2023
Poorly directed with extreme overacting and total predictability

By the end of episode three I had grown to detest the main four characters. The acting was over-the-top from start to finish, and it was just too easy to see what was coming next. Hugh Dennis played a good part, as did his wife. Even the nosey neighbour who was one of the swingers in 'Benidorm' was reasonable, but I found everybody else to be quite wooden

There were decent side-plots throughout, but it was so badly directed, and so predictable, that it ruined what could have been a decent drama

I only watched it through to the end because I'd invested time in it and I felt it owed me.

Nothing original....best thing is Alfred Enoch!!
bevowen1 December 2023
I watched this hoping it would be good and the first couple of episodes were OK. It starts off fine but then loses its way with some unconvincing acting by everyone except Alfred Enoch. Why he agreed to make this series is beyond me as he is a superb actor of great strength (take a look at his work in USA) Alfred Enoch simmers under the shock behaviour of his wayward wife and I am surprised they were even together as they seemed so ill matched Make your own mind up but if I was given a choice I would have given this a miss! There are plenty of great shows and this just misses the mark as it's predictable and nothing new.....

Welcome to Moron Crescent!
corndollyjhs29 November 2023
Warning: Spoilers
Apparently nobody in this show can have sex unless the curtains are open and the lights are on.

The local pervert walks in and out of neighbourhood homes with impunity before pleasuring himself (with the lights on and curtains open)

The sex scenes themselves are truly awful- if you're thinking of partner swapping - watch this it will make you embrace monogamy!

It might help if anyone in this show looked remotely sexy. Every time Eleanor Tomlinson tries to look vampish and alluring she comes across as undernourished and demented. The cop is freakishly buff despite smoking, drinking and never working out.

Avoid!!

Must see TV
cgerard-3307927 November 2023
I wasn't sure about the subject matter at the center of THE COUPLE NEXT DOOR,however, as soon as I started watching it was clear this story is about much more than non monogamous couples. It's tender, compelling, intense and complex. Danny, played by Outlander star Sam Heughan, is a fascinating character, at times so much more then so much less than he appears on the surface. Eleanor Tomlinson, as Evy, Alfred Enoch as Pete and Jessica De Gouw as Becka, are equally complex and compelling characters and the story line twists and turns and offers multiple surprises.

The entire cast is spot on perfect but it was so refreshing seeing Heughan, who plays Outlanders Jamie Fraser with such skill, break out his full range of acting chops in this role. Well done Sam!

This is one not to miss as Dries Vos brings his unique directorial sense to the story line making it at once a thrilling, e empathetic and very sexy drama.

Awful
hondaman-407495 December 2023
Warning: Spoilers
I had a suspicion about this but agreed to watch it with my wife. Wow where do I start ? The couple next door live across the street. Apparently only 7 people live in the street as nobody ever comes out of their houses even when a motorbike is ridden around late at night. Where two police officers have so much time on their hands , they can steal two police bikes and work for a local crime boss ? The extremely sensitive warehouse owned by said crime boss is left unlocked and unattended. When aforementioned crime boss is exposed of millions of pound in fraud , a single police officer is sent to arrest him. The central female characters father shoots a complete stranger in the woods and then simply disappears until the end . The professional sharpshooter ( killed by the father ) decides it's better to stand and not lean against a tree when aiming for his target. I can't believe that money was provided to fund this utterly awful series.

Promises more than it delivers
xnzfjbgdsk28 November 2023
The premise of this show is intriguing and I like the idea of storylines that will inevitably intertwine.

The characters are well written and well acted but.....there was always going to be a'but'.

There are some things that don't add up.

The new couple move to a palm lined estate, where in England might that be?

They can buy a house like that on a teachers and local newspaper reporter's salary.

A policeman gets away with using his bike for nefarious purposes, surely they have tracking devices on them?

She is starting at a new school whilst he appears to have been at the newspaper long enough to produce a report on local corruption.

I read that some filming was done in Holland, which is where I assume the housing estate is, but the question is why go to the bother of doing that?

I know it's a drama but it is details that don't fit that ruin things for me.

Weak and unimpressive remake of the 2014 Dutch original
JRB-NorthernSoul7 December 2023
I watched the original Dutch TV version of this show which ran for 4 series 10x40m from 2014-2019. It was a bit cheesy at times but enjoyable with well-grounded characters and a dramatic storyline full of unexpected twists and some pretty raunchy scenes.

The remake seems to have been drained of drama and toned down and as a consequence comes a distant second to the original (Which was titled 'New Neighbours' but can still be found on C4 Catchup with subtitles as 'The Swingers'. If you haven't watched either definitely seek out the original.

The remake didn't feel authentic if felt tepid with a lot of one-dimensional performances, Hugh Dennis aside. For some reason it was shot in Leeds and The Netherlands and Belgium but meant to be set in Yorkshire, so a lot of it just looked plain wrong.

I'm afraid I very quickly lost all interest, it was naffly made in all respects, including acting, writing and direction.

Come for Eleanor Tomlinson, stay for Jessica De Gouw
frukuk29 November 2023
This is a moderately entertaining amuse-bouche, but best only for filling a 6 hour hole in your schedule that would otherwise go unfilled.

I was drawn to this by Eleanor Tomlinson, but the real revelation was Jessica De Gouw. The latter gave by far the best performance of the piece and her emotionally intelligent character, Becka, was by far the best written. Eleanor Tomlinson also deserves credit for an almost convincing performance, given her character, Evie, was rather unbelievably inconsistent.

All in all, this felt very much plot driven, rather than character driven: certain things needed to happen so the characters were forced to behave in less believable ways. It also suffered from having to tame down the key sex scene. While I understand most actors don't want to appear naked, I'm not convinced that after all the intense anticipation, very vanilla sex is what would have taken place.
