- "Nashville" - "I Saw the Light" - April 3,2013
It's "Nashville" in New York City tonight as the tour rolls into Brooklyn for three nights at the Barclays Center.
While Rayna, Tandy, and Daphne and Maddie marvel at Rayna's huge billboard in Times Square, Juliette is livid when she looks at it.
So Rayna has big plans to sightsee and eat out with the girls and Tandy but they talk about wanting to hang with Juliette and Maddie announces that she wants to be a singer. When Rayna balks at this idea, Maddie is upset. Tandy and Rayna talk and she points out that the girls idolize her and want to be like her and that her refusal to even consider letting them perform smacks of when Rayna complained that Lamar didn't support her dreams. This cuts Rayna who just hopes to protect them from the evils of the business. So, she wisely explains that she wants them to live their lives, have fun, cultivate their talents and they'll see but for right now, she's giving over her sound check to them so they can get the thrill of performing on her big stage. They play "Ho Hey" by the Lumineers, which Rayna's band has sweetly learned to play to back them, and they are adorable and sound great and get a huge hand from the band crew and assorted audience members including Bucky, Deacon, Tandy and Marshall Evans who gets a gleam in his eye and asks Rayna if she wants to sign them to her label. She tells him, playfully, to back off. It's a lovely scene.
Juliette meanwhile is trying to get to a Zen place with Dante and her mother but is too angry about the Rayna billboard. Dante, who you may recall was a corporate business type, tells her to do something about it. So she asks Marshall to find her some corporate sponsors. Under Dante's tutelage, she presents herself to a headphone company board room and explains her amazing Twitter/FB/Tumblr stats and achievements and admits she's made mistakes but is now a grown up ready to make everyone some money. She clinches the deal.
When her mother isn't exactly jumping for joy about this Juliette is confused. Since she has essentially hijacked Dante-- telling her mother to go to the crew AA meeting-- to strategize and has been grumpy about Rayna, she's been ignoring her. Her mother said she wished that Juliette could care for her as much as she does her career. Later that night she dedicates her new single to her mom onstage.
Even later, she dedicates her body to Dante, convincing him that since he's seen the real her they can make a good team. He tries, pretty weakly it would appear, to point out how complicated this would make things but she won't take no for an answer and they go to town.
Deacon asks Stacy to join him on the road and she, and Sue the dog, happily agree. But when she discovers that Deacon has "history" with both of the headliners and didn't tell him she is none too pleased, especially after awkward encounters with both Rayna and Juliette. He apologizes, admits that his history with Rayna is complex but says it's just that. And after some contemplation he says he's going to leave the road. She says not to do it for her, but he says he's ready to come home and there's plenty for him to do there.
Scarlett and Gunnar have a hot new neighbor, who comes in the welcome form of Chris Carmack from "The O.C." Of course, he's a musician. Scarlett invites him over for a get to know ya dinner. But he has come at an inopportune time. Scarlett's contract with Rayna's record label has shown up in the mail and she finally tells Gunnar what happened. He seems angry and that bleeds a little into their dinner with the new guy. Musically, however, he is a kindred spirit and he and Gunnar stay up late playing and singing together. He finally asks Gunnar why if they sing, write, and live together Scarlett got a deal and he didn't. Gunnar explains. The next day Gunnar tells Scarlett he is not mad she got a record deal, he's mad she kept it from him. He explains that he is not a jealous son of a bitch like Avery. He is proud of her, excited for her, and he loves her and he wants her to sign. They kiss and make up.
Avery goes to Haley to offer her new songs for his publishing deal but she informs him he's in breach of contract and either needs to pay back his deal or find another record deal pronto because the publishing company signed him as a performer. He doesn't know what to do since he gave all his money to Domino. So...he busks. His old buddy and bass player comes to hear him play and, graciously, offers him the phone number of a guy that can hire him as a roadie. At the end of the episode we see him getting in a cab and head for the airport telling the driver he's going to New York. (Will he be Juliette's new roadie? Then replace Deacon when he quits? Then become Juliette's new boyfriend?)
Lamar bumps into Coleman at the Hermitage Hotel, tries first to reminisce with him, then when that doesn't work belittles him, and then threatens him, all in an effort to convince him to persuade Teddy to reconsider about the stadium. Coleman is unmoved. Lamar goes back to his crony who suggests a more personal approach since they have discovered who leaked the Teddy-Rayna divorce news to the tabloids.
Peggy shows up at the Jaymes-Conrad family home in nothing but a trench coat. Teddy enjoys this but says no one can know she was there while Rayna was out of town.
Later when Teddy is gone, Lamar confronts Peggy. It turns out that she was the one who leaked the information about Teddy and Rayna's divorce, and lies about Rayna cheating, to the tabloids. Lamar convinces Peggy that Teddy would not be happy to hear this news so in exchange for not sharing her dirty deeds she is tasked with convincing Teddy to build the stadium on Lamar's land.
Cut to Peggy trying to do just that. Teddy rebuffs her saying he doesn't want anything to do with Lamar but she notes he's a big power broker and there is more room for expansion on his land. Teddy seems justifiably confused by this line of conversation.
After Lamar pressures Peggy he heads home and calls a crony to tell her that she's in the tank for them. But just as he toasts his new baseball stadium he drops his drink and clutches his chest. Lamar, it would appear is having a heart attack.
