With his first case of the third series solved it is time for Luther to catch another killer; this time it is a vigilante who is killing those he thinks the law has treated too leniently. We first see him as he come to the rescue of a young couple being savagely attacked by a gang; he kills some of them and when questioned the woman he saved refused to help Luther; after all she sees him as her Saviour. It is clear that he is more than that though; he has left his calling card with each of the victims; it contains a web address and a time. At the appointed time be makes a streamed broadcast outlining his grievances; his own wife was had been killed by a man out on bail and it is clear that he won't stop until he is caught or killed. If that case wasn't enough for Luther Det Supt Stark and DCI Gray have approached his new girlfriend Mary and shown him the file of allegations against him.
This was a fine opening to the latest case and those concerned about the number of women brutally murdered on the BBC, including the previous case for Luther, will be relieved that none are killed in this instalment. The killer is shown in a light that initially makes him come across as more sympathetic than most screen killers after all he is killing those society wants behind bars. However it soon becomes apparent that he can't be reasoned with and seems to revel in the role he sees himself in namely an executioner removing the most reviled from society. This serves to make the story more interesting as it makes a change to have a killer who is more sympathetic than his victims. The investigation into Luther takes a bit of a back seat which to my mind is a good thing as the main case is more interesting; in mainly serves to stir up problems for Luther with Mary rather than anything else. There are plenty of tense moments; the initial assault on the couple was shocking and fairly disturbing as was the scene where a mob tries to prevent Luther from saving one of the vigilante's victims these weren't half as shocking as the end of the episode though I won't say what happens as I don't want to spoil it! Overall I thought this was a really good episode and look forward to seeing what happens next the preview certainly suggested things will get even tenser before the case is solved.
