Could have been so much more
kmtackett22 September 2013
I wanted this to be so good. The concept was good and it's a subject that should be explored and played with.

Why was there an Instagram-ish filter on it? It had a black cloudy filter that made me feel like my eyesight was clouded. Very uncomfortable.

Acting wasn't very good but some scenes were filmed beautifully.

I think there was a mistake too. When Mark met Evelyn she said she had some files he could look at if he didn't mind a dirty basement. Then when they were down there, she said "I'll be downstairs" as if they were in the attic.

The effects were super cheesy. The cutting-out static effect they put on things was kind of lame.

if you can sit through this flick you are ready for the asylum
trashgang2 June 2014
I was afraid to start watching it and not for the scary parts if they were involved but for the title. It contains the word Paranormal and of course you are immediately linked to the Paranormal Activity franchise. And when it is written on the sleeve Inspired By True Events then you know you have to be carefully.

The first 15 minutes you start to know the main leads and it works but of course the activity is already there and it didn't look convincing. It is even done like the original franchise with Day 1 and Day 2 so you also know that it is going to be a slow movie. In the beginning the activity is done by sound. Later on the activity becomes more active in lights going on and off, windy area's, shaky cam shots. You have seen it all before but I kept watching to see more. Then the activity takes place in the camera itself and slowly it did lose my attention.

The ghost on the rail track was a bit ridiculous. And from there on it's clear that it was a low budget flick, where were the effects? The acting should show the possession but that just doesn't work that way. Here and there we had the fast movement of the possessed girl but after a while the movie fast forwarded too, I pressed the button on the remote. To be honest, the best part was after 65 minutes when Michelle (Laura Gilreath) was walking around in her underwear...and her face changing into a fake Goth, well it wasn't intended to be funny but it was.

Not so bad it's good, just bad
jmbwithcats19 September 2013
First sign this movie is going to be terrible... two guys go out to an old ruined home in the woods, one guy sees an old lady, the first guy says, why are you freaking out about old ladies? Second guy doesn't point out the fact that she doesn't exist? lol... The writing is just that bad... and that's the very first scene, so I have my trusty popcorn and my kitty cat, but it looks like this one is going to be really bad.

I love horror films, paranormal films that take place in an asylum so I gave it a shot, I don't mind independent movies, amateur actors, if the story is really good.

I was interested in the story being told here, but the problems are many.

The script is not very well written, the scenes are poorly utilized, such as when a guy goes to see archives, he doesn't seem to find anything and the whole scene comes off as worthless, adding no depth or tension or reason to the film.

Something begins to happen but then just cuts and it's over and no one's that impressed or surprised, which makes no sense.

Poorly written characters throughout.

No one has any chemistry, the friendship, the girlfriend? No one has any believable connection or emotion to the relationships they're supposed to be portraying... Laura Gilreath and Aaron Mathias do an alright job with the maddeningly bad script and direction.

I love when the half brother is giving Andy sh*t about borrowing his boat, and then when we finally see the boat it's a pretty cheap boat with cheap plastic back yard chairs tied together.

There's some decent story twists that I enjoyed, such as Mary finding him and getting taken back to the hospital and Aaron pursuing, showing you the movie really could have been better if they had just kept the story more human and not tried to be so "smart" with the dialog that really hurt the film.

Practically Unanimous Opinions
claudio_carvalho4 April 2015
After an unsuccessful experience as screenplay writer, Mark (Aaron Mathias) comes from Los Angeles to New York invited by his former college friend Andy (Nathan Spiteri). Andy lives with his girlfriend Michelle (Laura Gilreath) and the aspiring filmmaker expect to make a documentary about a patient of an abandoned hospital called Typhoid Mary. They investigate her case and interview people connected to her expecting to find the truth about the internee. Soon they discover that Mary was an outcast daughter and probably a guinea pig in the asylum where her father interned her. When Michelle performs a séance, she is possessed the spirit of Mary. Meanwhile Mark learns that Michelle, Andy and his life are in danger.

"Paranormal Asylum: The Revenge of Typhoid Mary" is an awful horror movie with a messy screenplay, terrible action and laughable dialogues and situations. This is one of the few movies that has practically unanimous opinions about. My vote is one.

Title (Brazil): "Atividade Sobrenatural: A Vingança de Mery" ("Supernatural Activity: The Revenge of Mery")

Worst movie of all time!
cats-856-38589827 November 2013
If you like watching movies like Grave encounters and come across this movie, DON'T WATCH IT!!!!!! It is absolutely one of the worst movies that I have EVER SEEN IN MY FREAKING LIFE!!!!!! The actors are HORRIBLE, the lines are so lame, the filming looks like you are watching freaking "Days of our lives", and there are no parts that I enjoyed. There are no twists in the movie, there is no suspense, and it has absolutely terrible special effects, which especially disappoints me considering the movie was made in 2013,this year, and I would highly recommend that you do not EVER EVER WATCH THIS HORRIBLE MOVIE!!!!!! I am begging you, DON'T WATCH THIS MOVIE IT SUCKS SO MUCH!!!

Poor ghost story, poor as found film, poor as paranormal.
suite9224 June 2014
Warning: Spoilers
Dan, Andy, and Michelle (Andy's girlfriend), decide to make a documentary about the real-life Typhoid Mary, and the final months of her life. They find some of the places where she stayed and met descendants of some of the people who knew her. They set up equipment to record events.

Michelle, while alone, tries a séance, and this does not go well. Dan keeps seeing ghostly figures. At least at first Andy does not see them.

There's a thread about the origin of modern psychotropic drugs; the film makers pursue this for their documentary. There is a thread about Michelle being possessed, and the consequences of this.

Will any of the protagonists survive this encounter?

-----Scores-----

Cinematography: 2/10 There were hand-held problems here and there. The fakery with the ghosts was just plain bad, and there was so much of it. Even the day light 'normal' scenes were de-colorized to look faked.

Sound: 3/10 Annoying from beginning to end. It sounds dubbed.

Acting: 0/10

Screenplay: 0/10 Hm, the usual for this type of film: no resolution in any thread. No 'moving on' for any of the ghosts, or whatever they are. No toe hold for logic or rational processes. Lack of exposition of motivations. No humour of any sort.

Don't Bother
mariajonasfahlsing1 October 2013
Warning: Spoilers
This movie suffers from many problems:

1) Plot holes large enough to drive a truck through. 2) Horrible acting. 3) Bad cinematography. 4) Lame script writing. 5) Confusing, convoluted plot line. 6) Flat, moronic characters that we never get emotionally invested in, because we are never given a reason to care about them. 7) Continuity problems. 8) Bad, boring soundtrack. 9) Boring story that is never fully explained.

There is more I would complain about, but I don't want to waste any more time on this terrible, horrible, no good, very bad direct-to-Netflix release.

Amateurish across the board
pmcguireumc18 September 2013
While Paranormal Asylum benefits from a wonderful concept, that of searching for the true story of Typhoid Mary, it suffers from three major problems.

1 - a ridiculous back story of the film maker trying to get out from under his girlfriend's family.

2 - filming quality that, while the coloring is lovely, it looks either like a college graduation film or a commercial for local TV.

3 - terrible acting. Across the board, terrible acting. No one in this film was even Disney level quality. While good looking and in great shape, while they had nice hair even, the range of their dramatic skills covered the gamut from a to b.

On the positive side - when the film sticks to the found footage genre (which I love!) it is above average. Unfortunately, it only uses found footage techniques for about 15-20 minutes total. This is unfortunate, because the tricks used in those scenes are excellent.

Ultimately, I was left dissatisfied with the movie, knowing that it could have been so much more which is a shame, because I enjoy most found footage movies. I give it a 3 for the few minutes of found footage techniques and the twists employed therein.

You owe me 1.5 hours of life
bwalker523 October 2013
If I ever invent a time machine I want to go back to 2 hours ago when I rented this movie so I can stop myself.

Worst acting I have EVER seen, worst effects, worst suspense, worst script. WOW.

Let's start with the continuity. I felt like I was watching those "real" ghost videos on youtube (that teenagers make) all stuck together randomly.

Misc stuff: There is no character development, no emotion, no story line. 1. The dude watching folks get killed doesn't call the cops or even tell the people he is on the phone with about what he just saw. 2. The men are chasing girlfriend as she slides down the hall. The camera stays on them and they just quit running. Then we find girlfriend in another room. How did she get there and why didn't the guys chase her into it? 3. Why did this dude record about 3-4 ghosts and never check his camera to see if what he thinks he saw was there? I don't think he was actually ever recording.

Every time Mediterranean guy tells white guy (I honestly couldn't be bothered to learn or even look up their character names) random bits of hate like "you just want to sleep with her" or "why is a girl like her dating me!!!" I kept asking myself why these two guys are even friends. No emotional connect to each other. Much less with me.

Audio: It was about half way through the movie that I finally understood this wasn't a foreign film badly dubbed. The audio matched the lips and this film was made in the US. It just had flat and emotionless audio to go along with the acting. I think Mediterranean guy may have actually dubbed his whole performance in post processing which is why, even when he is freaking out, he sounds like he is sitting in a warehouse watching this film instead of acting in it.

This entire thing reeks of college course credit that accidentally got made into a feature film. wow... just wow.

Acting: Every performance was punchable and cringeworthy but none more than the guy who tested the drug. I couldn't tell if he was trying to crank up the flamboyant meter or if he was just "acting at me" but someone needs to dial him back down by about half.

Plot: I'm just going to say this about my suspicions for the origin of the plot. I picture two drunk guys around a camp fire with one saying "we should make a movie about typhoid mary" and the other saying "like.. uh. yeah. And she should be a ghost or whatever". They work for 1 hour and the script is done.

Ps. it is obvious the guy who rated it high is brothers with the director or something. Or maybe he saw a different film.

Even Brain Soap won't erase this
Jvaneng9 August 2014
Words cannot express how terrible this movie was. I have it ranked as the second worst movie I have ever seen (Dracula 3000 being the worst) Some of the positives on this movie - Michelle had nice white teeth, the men had nicely brushed hair, and the story of Typhoid Mary of course has potential. I think the biggest problem with this film (as everyone else has pointed out) is that there was no chemistry at all, and all the interactions seemed forced and very unbelievable. You can fault the terrible acting, the struggle to remember their lines, or the hokey side stories. Any scene with struggling in it ... wow ... bad doesn't do justice. All in all - the biggest issue was everything. To quote my wife - "Why is this movie lasting so long?" (it runs 89 mins) We watched this for *free* on Netflix, and still felt ripped off (you can fault us for not turning it off I guess)

If you are tempted to watch this film ... don't. Grab a camera, some friends, heck - even grab a few drinks, and make your own version, it will be better than this!

Paranormal Investigation - Done Right ...
mikehaberfelner18 September 2013
Paranormal investigations have long become a popular and well-respected horror sub-genre, attracting big budget Hollywood, micro budget and even documentary filmmakers alike, and the results ranging from the dead serious to the trashy to the utter spoof - and only the fewest filmmakers seem to get it right. Enter PARANORMAL ASYLUM: THE REVENGE OF TYPHOID MARY: Neither is it a big and pointless special effects fest à la big budget Hollywood, nor yet another crappy "found footage" exercise (even if the movie's story might suggest just that), but telling a proper, engaging story with plenty of interesting and unexpected plot twists, carried by fleshed-out characters and atmospheric images - and you simply can't ignore the perfectly creepy locations, either ...

A cheap knock off of Grave Encounters
FemalefanLotR18 September 2013
Warning: Spoilers
Paranormal Asylum: The Revenge of Typhoid Mary tells the story of Typhoid Mary who in the early 20th century was kept in confinement at a mental institution in New York when it was thought that she was responsible for spreading the fever. Decades later two friends and one of the friend's girlfriends decide to investigate and film her story, however they discover that Mary's ghost is out for revenge. My issues with this movie include: Poorly written script and awful acting from the main cast. At some points it was slow moving It was a cheap knock off of Grave Encounters including the ending This is not a movie worth watching and I give it a 1/5

Bad
tessaashe29 October 2013
Warning: Spoilers
The very first hint that this movie is not up to par is in the summary. The legend of Typhoid Mary is so easy to find any modern seven-year-old could look it up. Early on in the film, they make up a new, special story for Typhoid Mary that has only three points in common with the original story: Typhoid Mary worked as a cook, the approximate time line, and the fact she was an immigrant. I remember learning this story in grade school, so hearing the new and not so improved story was jarring. Then, near the end, they randomly change the time line.

The dialog is, at best, awkward, and the characters are uniformly stupid in different ways. The leading male waffles between believing and not believing in ghosts, even in the last few scenes of the movie.

The absolute best part of the movie is that it takes the best parts of found footage films and mixes it with asides from a non-shaky-camera perspective. The absolute worst part? It feels disjointed and lacks an element of fear. The scariest scene, aside from the very end, is watching the vegan eat meat.

If you like movies based on actual legends, don't watch. If you like films set in asylums, don't watch. If you like ghost stories, watch with caution.

Plain and simple, this movie sucks monkey balls. I've lost IQ points sitting through this travesty. Blah blah stupid plot Blah blah pi$$ poor acting Blah Blah too many plot twists going no where Blah Blah craptacular Blah blah slit my wrists this sucks. I am writing all this gibberish because they demand 10 lines when it barely deserves 10 words. This movie is horrible. what you have just said is one of the most insanely idiotic things I have ever heard. At no point in your rambling, incoherent response were you even close to anything that could be considered a rational thought. Everyone in this room is now dumber for having listened to it. I award you no points, and may God have mercy on your soul.

Awful
amandajmoore28 January 2014
I was warned - but I still watched it.

Plot ruined by terrible acting, terrible effects, terrible dialogue and character interactions. They could have foregone the badly animated effects, particularly the ghost on the train track which looked like the Pilsbury Dough Man without a head, and spent it on better actors. Having a ghost at every turn could be replaced perhaps with long pauses where the viewer's imagination creates a sense of something. The two main characters, film-makers, had no discernible relationship as friends, the one with darker hair was just angry all the time and completely ignoring the fact that his friend had seen ghosts even though he was setting up cameras to find ghosts. There are other emotions in life. Perhaps they should have been two less emotional college friends studying film. The taller one was also not a very good film-maker anyway as he didn't seem to film anything.

The camera filter was also odd, sort of dark-edged, not either good quality and saturated or just hand-held home camera. The sound was also strange as if it had been dubbed, the position of the source didn't seem to match where people were standing sometimes.

I also think that the makeup artist hired to turn the main female character into an angry spirit thought that she was preparing Marilyn Manson for a gig.

Horrible movie that is not believable in the slightest
tabithazietlow0047 October 2013
Warning: Spoilers
I usually don't write reviews on movies but this movie was so horrible I just really needed a place to vent about my frustration. I love B horror movies but this movie isn't even good enough for a B rating. Here are the top problems with the movie:

1. The acting is horrible. And when I say horrible, I mean atrociously horrible. 2. The writing is worse than the acting. The dialog between the characters is unbelievable and doesn't flow. And the film could have flowed a lot better and made more sense if the characters actually communicated. Like when Andy was denying that the chick was at the hospital he could have pulled his friend aside and told him right then and there what was going on but he didn't and it just created an annoying fight that was pointless. The two best friends seem to have a lot of annoying fights that are pointless and don't do anything for the film except slow it down. 3. The chicks wig when she is "possessed" by Mary. You can see her blonde hair sticking out and her boyfriend was like "you dyed your hair" when all he had to say is "why are you wearing that wig?" Very distracting. 4. Andy witnessed three people dying. Mr Schefield jumped off his balcony and Brooks gets shot (why and who he got shot by was never explained)and then his friend gets stabbed....and he never calls the cops for any of these deaths????? 4. And now for the ending....wtf. It made no sense why these ghosts were still after Mary. The whole movie was pointless and a waste of time. DO NOT WATCH THIS MOVIE!!!!

Meh - Don't Bother...
rebeccakatielouisexo9 December 2014
Firstly, I will applaud that this film does have a great idea behind it, being based on a fact, but it wasn't executed in the best way. Other then the no scares at all, it was a very timid horror/ghost film, I've ever seen, which I did not expect from the title: Paranormal Asylum.

The film's quite obviously made on a budget, with obviously poorly done graphics, and special effects which makes the film scream fake. The storyline had so many holes in it, and was not fluent.

All in all, if I could I would not rate this film anything, surprised it's been given like 2 stars. It's not worth watching or taking the time out of your day to watch.

However if you do decide to watch the film, you have been warned! @RebeccaKLxo

A real 'B' movie
Leofwine_draca5 June 2018
Warning: Spoilers
PARANORMAL ASYLUM is a straight-to-video found footage horror flick made on a tiny budget. It doesn't have much sense and plays out just like every other example of the genre that you can think of. A couple of aspiring student filmmakers investigate the legend of a local 'Typhoid Mary' and soon find themselves pursued by her spirit in numerous cheesy scenes. This has a glossy look and feel to it which doesn't really match with the stilted performances and dreadful CGI effects. It's not the kind of film that you can get excited about.

The Movie Doesn't Make Any Sense
timothygartin26 October 2019
So, Typhoid Mary comes back from the dead and she: 1) dyes her hair, 2) cooks breakfast, and 3) sleeps. Terrifying. Overall, if this is as exciting as a possession gets, the afterlife is really dull.

The acting is poor and I had a hard time following the story as they moved from scene to scene. The twist ending was really pointless and took away from the story.

The effects were hit-and-miss. Sometimes, there was a really good effect, but mostly they were Sci-Fi Channel level effects.

I do not recommend this one.

Awful visuals, audio, screenplay, writing
scottyhotty200229 February 2020
Please do not watch! This film has the worst visuals I've ever seen, it's like a kid just got a new computer, wants to try everything but still doesn't know how to use it. The writing and acting is dumb. There is no explanation for anything that happens. The audio's are dubbed over in parts and sound awful. Other audio is out of sync in parts. Such a slow burner with stupid side stories with again no explanation

What a mess
hoytyhoyty25 October 2014
What a mess.

This film is a good example of the axiom, 'The Story Is King'. The story is indeed of paramount importance, so you'd better include one. These guys forgot to.

I've seen some very good low-budget non-mainstream horrors recently, such as 'Absentia' and 'Afflicted'. This isn't one of them.

Annoyingly, this film starts out with great promise. Whoever was fiddling with the video-toolbox managed to get some great effects out of it, and even the occasional momentary scare.

But then the complete lack of a plot destroys the whole thing, and you end up watching it to the end - I'm assuming the reader got that far - purely on a train-wreck-fascination basis. The story makes no sense at all.

And what's with all the historical inaccuracies? Surely a good ghost plot could have been cooked up around the strange tale of the real Mary - the truth was bizarre enough by itself. This fiction was just silly. The bits with the girlfriend, the kitchen, the modified voice, the basement and - particularly - the recipe, were just sooooooo irritating.

Well guys, I hope it didn't leave you completely broke. Analyse your mistakes, and write a story before you attempt your next effort.

Sickening victim blaming.
sicklittlebunny10 November 2020
I was hoping for a little entertainment and a ghost story based on one of the most famous women in history. What I got was truly disgusting!

Mary Mallon (not Malone as repeated used in the film) is know to have directly and knowingly infected at least 100 innocent people, killing several. She is also thought to be responsible for the typhoid outbreak that infected thousands with an incurable, deadly disease. Knowing she was contagious Mary got a job cooking in a maternity hospital, infecting a majority of hospital staff, killing doctors and nurses.

The film claims Mary was abused by her first employer. A man who gave her a cushy job working in a holiday home and had his household infected by her in return. (In fairness I should say she didn't know she was infected at that time) They claim that Mary was employed as a nanny by a family who wanted their "crippled" son to catch typhoid and die. She never worked as a nanny and hid her status as a carrier from all her employers. They claim Mary was unfairly arrested and locked up. She was quarantined in relative comfort in a house given to her for the purpose. It's claimed that Mary's father had her locked up. She traveled to America alone and was quarantined as a risk to public health since she knew she was infecting people through their food but refused to stop working as a cook. Even using an alias to get work as it had been made public that she was a carrier so she wouldn't have been able to cook for and therefore infect entire households.

Mary was never a victim, but she was a killer and it was not the fault of her father, her employers, the doctors trying to stop an epidemic, or anyone else the film makers slander in an attempt to make an awful film remotely interesting.
