It is so not giraffe noise.

One episode in and I have seen enough.

I want to spell something out:

When I first saw Futurama I thought "wait, isn't this just the Simpsons in the future?" And the answer was: "Yes. And it's even better!"

When I first saw Rick and Morty I thought "Isn't this just Futurama?" the answer was "No. It has it's own tone and humor and it's pretty respectable".

When I first saw Inside Job (the series), I thought "Wait...is this just Rick and Morty as a work place comedy?" The answer was: "Yes. But it has potential"

And now Mulligan. It's Inside Job without potential. Maybe it's something to do with the election of the 45th into the white house causing this reaction in American animation. I hate bringing it up because I was as mortified as they were. I'm more loyal to the US than my own country.

I like the premise, I really do. Beginning where so many movies have ended and showing the aftermath...super stuff. But...just like our protagonist, the writers need to consider "what now?"

This first episode is so derivative and flaccid, it clearly wants to wave the social justice flag like Bojack and Big Mouth but someone needs to tell them that while we all love progressive humor, it is not sufficient to just have humorous progressivism. Progressivism itself is not a joke. Well, some people make it look like a joke but that's another essay...

There are likable characters and I want to go easy on the episode for them. But why are they so peripheral? I cannot get behind our protagonist. I want him to be out of his depth but I want someone basically likable. It's asking too much that people just accept him as their leader.

Lame humor, sanctimonious messages and just generally unoriginal, as a wise Horse Man said: it's a xerograph of a xerograph and sitting through this first episode till the end was more chance than it deserved.

The best part by far is "Giraffe Noise" but it transgresses the parameters established. You see, while they establish that animals have their own language that they use to communicate among themselves, the very idea that a giraffe would say "giraffe noise" with a human voice is not consistent with this premise. So the best thing in this show is absurd in context.
