As the world's biggest, oldest, most influential and perhaps most colourful institution of any kind, the Catholic church has surely merited more attention than cinema has accorded it. Angels & Demons and Habemus Papam gave a hint of the possibilities, and that somewhat minor branch of pastoral activity, exorcism, has been more than adequately explored. With the Tony Awards still eight months away, it may be foolish to declare a winner this early, but here’s my gutsy prediction: Cherry Jones is a lock to win Best Actress in a Play for her performance as Amanda Wingfield in a revival of Tennessee Williams’s "The Glass Menagerie." Here's why: 1. Duh…she’s Cherry Jones! Jones is royalty in the New York theater. She won this race for "The Heiress" (1995) and "Doubt" (2005) and contended in this category two other times losing in 1991 for "Our Country's Good" to Mercedes Ruehl ("Lost in Yonkers") and in 2000 for "A Moon for the Misbegotten" to Jennifer Ehle ("The Real Thing"). She has also proven herself in television and film, even winning an Emmy in 2009 for playing the supporting role of the President on season seven of "24." 2. She is performing a classic role ...

New York — The slow, lingering demise of "Smash" has felt more like a punch to the gut to the folks on Broadway.
The TV series about the making of a big stage musical came with a flurry of attention and some big names: Steven Spielberg, Debra Messing and Anjelica Huston. It was going to be a valentine to Broadway.
Sometimes, though, love letters get sent back.
After a first season with a healthy-sized audience averaging 7.7 million viewers, it returned this year to such dismal ratings it was banished to Saturday night. It won't be back for a third season.
But while TV was finally focusing on Broadway, plenty of stage veterans jumped to TV during the two-year run of "Smash." Some flamed out, some are holding on and some still hope:
_ Three-time Tony winner Sutton Foster's show about ballerinas, "Bunheads," has been picked up for a second season on ABC Family.

Carla Gugino, is set to play the female lead in ABC’s upcoming pilot titled Doubt. She will join previously announced Steve Coogan who is already on board to play a charming lawyer in David Shore‘s legal drama. The good thing is that Gugino jumps in to star as Coogan’s intelligent, hard-working ex-wife who still has feelings for him and yes – you already know what that means – they still have a sexual relationship. Sounds promising! So, at this moment we know that Tommy Schlamme will direct Doubt from a script written by Shore, and as we said, the whole thing will center on Coogan’s...

Steve Coogan may be the star of ABC’s David Shore drama pilot Doubt, but there are more pieces needed to put this puzzle together. Coogan’s character, Vincent, has an interesting backstory as a cop leaving his badge behind to become a low-rent lawyer, using all his cunning, charms and street smarts to work the system for his clients while battling his own demons, but there’s plenty going on in his present that requires the work of other actors. Just recently, Carla Gugino and John Pankow joined the pilot, giving the story a more completed feel. Now I can see the picture forming.
According to the Hollywood Reporter, Gugino and Pankow are both playing attorneys with strong connections to Vincent. Gugino plays his ex-wife and current lover Linda. She’s an intelligent, hard-working and no-nonsense Ada with little patience for Vincent’s courtroom antics. She knows precisely how...

Mercedes Ruehl is set to co-star opposite Steve Coogan and Carla Gugino in David Shore’s ABC legal drama pilot Doubt. The project, from Sony TV, centers on Vincent (Coogan), a former cop who’s now a cunning but charming low-rent lawyer using his street smarts to work the system for his clients while battling his own demons and wooing his ex-wife Linda (Gugino). Oscar and Tony winner Ruehl, repped by Frontline Management and Innovative, will play Mrs. Syn Newman, a lawyer who works (and constantly bickers) with his husband (John Pankow) in offices they rent from Vince. Though frequently exasperated by Vincent, she also considers him a son and her frustration with him never dampens her desire to fight alongside him. After a long courtship, Carla Gugino has signed on as the female lead opposite Steve Coogan in David Shore’s ABC legal drama pilot Doubt. Also cast in the project, from Sony TV, is John Pankow. It centers on Vincent (Coogan), a former cop who’s now a cunning but charming low-rent lawyer using his street smarts to work the system for his clients while battling his own demons and wooing his ex-wife Linda (Gugino). Linda is a no-nonsense Ada who has little patience for courtroom antics, especially when it comes to her impulsive ex-husband. Despite their separation, they still hook up occasionally for torrid sex, and although she can no longer live with Vince, it’s apparent that Linda still has a deep affection for him. Pankow plays Mr. Syd Newman, an old-school attorney who works with his wife and fellow lawyer in offices that they rent from Vince.

House creator David Shore definitely isn’t reinventing the asshole wheel with his new drama Doubt, which follows a cop turned “low-rent lawyer” who uses his cunning “street smarts” to game the system, yet remains plagued by his own personal demons. In Michael Winterbottom's The Trip Steve Coogan stars as a slightly manically magnified version of himself. The film has a rather hilarious running gag, and then clever nightmare sequence, wherein the actor-comedian deflects an offer to star in a U.S. TV drama. Knowing this makes the news that Coogan has signed on to star in House creator David Shore's new drama pilot Doubt all the more amusing.Set up at ABC, Doubt has Coogan playing a cop-turned-lawyer, which as an idea on paper just sounds ho-hum, but in the hands of the smarmy/charming Coogan, and with the capably twisted and eccentric writing of Shore (who helped make Brit Hugh Laurie a "house"hold name in America), this could be damn good.If the pilot clicks with ABC execs,...
