Appleton is -NOT- a small, or rural.
Appleton is a city of about 70,000 people surrounded by a dozen communities, all told more than 150,000 there.
Greenville is mentioned and is a small town sort of like the idea that the movie is portraying Appleton to be. Appleton is such a small town, it has an international Airport, where visiting NFL teams fly into and lodge when they play the Green Bay Packers, taking the Interstate highway to Green Bay 25 minutes to Lambeau field.
The farms seen around Appleton had to have been shots, several miles outside the "city" limits, or somewhere else. Traffic noise alone from any Appleton Avenue, or Interstate highway, or major highway bypass, at all hours of the day and night, would have ruined the movie.
Small Towns have big secrets, yeah like where they actually filmed this, because it wasn't Appleton, about the only thing they got right was, that Appleton is in Wisconsin and in Wisconsin it snows, and it was cold enough to see the actors breath outside in some scenes.
