- It is the day that Larry and Janet Colfer are due to move out of the home on the Heygate Estate in Elephant and Castle, London, where they have lived in for 37 years. As their dog, Lady, sleeps, we see them packing up, ready to go. The film cuts to a month earlier and we see them sitting on the sofa, reminiscing about moving onto the estate in the seventies and how it seemed like paradise to them. The estate's original architect, Tim Tinker, tells us of the original vision for the estate, trying to create a community, and laments the council's failure to maintain the estate. The removal men arrive, but have problems moving Janet's bed. Larry argues with the council officials who come to oversee the move. Eventually they agree to make sure the bed can be moved into their new home in East Dulwich. Janet has to sign over the house to the council officials. She takes them to task for the promise of new homes that the council made but did not keep. The removal men finish packing the van, and they hand over the keys to the council officials. It is time to leave, but Lady does not want to go, and has to be dragged away from the house. As soon as they are out of sight, council workmen move in to seal up the doors and windows so that it is no longer habitable. A year later, we see Larry and Janet on the sofa in their new home in East Dulwich. We learn that Lady died shortly after the move. They don't want to move again, they say. But, says Janet, if they rebuilt their old block on the Heygate Estate she would move back.—Patrick Steel
