A Modern Marvel of Greek Tragedy
This video is just pregnant with symbolism and dramatic irony. With the retrospect of a modern viewing, the stage is ripely set for the tragic downfall of this tortured character.
Dax's pride in the beginning of the video is a stark juxtaposition to the utter shame, despair and defeat he exudes at the beginning of the following episode, providing a contrast to the audience between triumph, victory, success and crushing defeat - failure.
Furthermore, Dax dressing up like Superman - The Man of Steel - provides further symbolism of the heroic figure he feels he represents. He's not just going to dress up for this day at school. He's going to be the untouchable, the indestructible, the infallible. Superman represents the heart and soul of the American people, the invincible and incorrigible sense of patriotic glory that showers the very fabric of American culture. Dax Flame, in these short moments, IS America.
The beautiful construction of this piece means it can be enjoyed as a standalone piece of media - an Internet video - but when considered as part of a series, you can see the artful masterpiece it really is. This art is an incredible, unmatchable Greek tragedy. In fact, a subversive tragedy, as upon first watching it appears to be a comedy. Only on repeat watching with prior knowledge of the events to happen do the clues and cracks begin to show, dropping the blunt façade of being "funny" and showing itself to be truly emotionally complex, challenging-to-the-mind and thought-provoking. The complexities of tragic narratives intertwined with the heartbreaking mundanities of real life gives this piece a unique edge unlike any other. It truly, truly is a masterpiece that brings tears to the eye of any true enjoyer. Bravo DaxFlame. Bravo.
