Cheap Trick: The 35th Anniversary of Budokan Live (2013)

*** (out of 4)

Cheap Trick filmed this concert on April 30, 2013 at the El Rey Theatre in Los Angeles, CA in support of the anniversary of the Live at Budokan album. There's no question that fans of the band will enjoy this as there are some rarely played tunes as well as many of the classic hits like "Surrender," "I Want You to Want Me," Ain't That a Shame" and "Goodnight." Other tunes include very good versions of "Hello There," "Come On, Come On," "Can't Hold On" and "Oh Carolina." Having recently seen Cheap Trick live, it's really a shame that they haven't become much bigger because they really are one of the best live bands out there and they've got plenty of great songs and they know how to put on a show and have a good time with the fans. The show here is certainly a very good one as everyone in the band is in fine form and you can see all that energy they bring to the stage as well as the passion they show towards the fans. The camera-work throughout is good, although there were a few too many times where they went for some swooping shots that really didn't' add much. The audio mix was extremely good with the perfect balance between the vocals and the music. Fans of Cheap Trick are going to enjoy this show clocking in at just over 90-minutes and if you're new to the band then this here offers up a good look to what makes them so special.
