Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson recently made his grand return to wrestling with the WWE, but the star might be taking his "heel" persona a little too far these days.
There's absolutely nothing unusual in Hollywood when it comes to the delicate art of managing high-profile egos -- just ask Vin Diesel, who knows all too well from his days bumping heads with his famous co-star during the "Fast and Furious" saga -- but things seem to have escalated to a whole new level on the set of Amazon Studios' upcoming Christmas film "Red One." That's the latest scuttlebutt according to extensive reporting by Umberto Gonzalez of The Wrap, who paints an alarming picture of habitual lateness, deeply unprofessional behavior, and producing inexperience in several crucial roles. All of these factors seem to have come together to turn what was initially envisioned as a straight-to-streaming original and a potential franchise starter...

New data from Ampere Analysis shows how much HBO titles like ‘Band of Brothers’ and ‘Insecure’ have risen in popularity since becoming available on Netflix.
It’s been nearly a year since reports first surfaced that Warner Bros. Discovery was in talks with Netflix to send some HBO original titles to stream on that platform, while at the same time remaining on Wbd’s platform Max. At the time the move was considered somewhat controversial, as the prevailing wisdom at the time held that media companies should keep their prized content in order to draw viewers to their own services. But months after the licensing deal between HBO and Netflix became official, new data from Ampere Analysis shows that many HBO shows doubled in popularity after being sent to stream on Netflix.
“Ballers” saw the biggest jump in relative popularity, quadrupling its score in the month after its Netflix premiere.

The 2024 NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament demonstrates a rising trend of sports simulcasts. Can alternate broadcasts help streamers differentiate?
Even for casual sports fans, it’s hard to ignore the number of options you have for watching just one sporting event these days. Take the 2024 NCAA Men’s and Women’s Basketball Tournaments, for example. The national championship game on the men’s side will air on TNT, TBS, and stream on Max, while the women’s championship will be broadcast on ABC and streamed on ESPN+. Sports rightsholders are doing their best to meet fans wherever they are, and as customers struggle to find which channel or streamer is carrying which sport a new question for providers comes into focus: how do they differentiate themselves from the competition as sports games become more available in more places? One popular way that broadcasters have increasingly embraced in recent years is the alternate broadcast.

There is no denying that theaters are losing their charm thanks to streaming platforms like Netflix. People now would much rather prefer paying a monthly fee and enjoying more content than ever before in the comfort of their own homes. Now, it takes films like Barbie and Oppenheimer to drive people to theater halls and experience cinema first-hand.

Judd Apatow was not happy with Warner Bros. Discovery’s decision last year to license a handful of HBO original series to Netflix. Many shows including Insecure, Band of Brothers, The Pacific, Six Feet Under, and Ballers were licensed to the streaming platform. Apatow described this move as scary because Netflix could buy around older shows and stream them to their audience, rather than investing millions on new shows. However, X-Men writer Zack Stentz couldn’t agree with Apatow’s views.

Judd Apatow is commenting on the trend of streamers licensing content from rival studios.
It was recently announced that Warner Bros. Discovery struck a deal to license Sex and the City to Netflix. Apatow is now looking ahead at the implications that these types of deals might have in the industry in the years ahead.

I understand why people like the comfort food of television,” Apatow told Vulture in a recent interview. “But it’s a scary thing as a creator of television, because of all the streamers going, ‘Wait a second. Judd Apatow spoke to Vulture in a recent interview about the current state of television, including why the trend of rewatching older series and licensing pacts between streamers is “scary.”
“I’m of two minds,” Apatow said. “There’s a part of me that’s an audience member: I’ll go back and rewatch ‘Deadwood’ or ‘NYPD Blue’ or any of the David Milch shows. The “This Is 40” writer-director continued, “They realize, Oh wait, Netflix can just buy shows from HBO, and I would assume they’re cheaper than making new ones.

We live in an era where we all know exactly what “content” means – or, rather, what it has transformed into. But is it something that is harmful to the industry as a whole or do the benefits outweigh that? Well, Judd Apatow has a few things to share…

Judd Apatow is opening up about the current state of television and why he finds it “scary” that Netflix can license shows from HBO.

Judd Apatow is warning against the rise of rewatching and the implications it has for streamers not to greenlight new series.

Anna Camp and Griffin Matthews have been cast in “You” Season 5 at Netflix as series regulars, Variety has learned exclusively.
The pair are the latest additions to the cast of the popular show’s fifth season, which will also be its final season. It was previously announced that Madeline Brewer would also appear in a series regular role.
Camp will play both Raegan and Maddie Lockwood, twin sisters-in-law to Joe Goldberg (Penn Badgley). The characters are described as follows: “Raegan is the cunning, cutthroat CFO of the Lockwood Corp who has her eyes on the throne and will crush any adversary…be them family or not. Maddie, on the other hand, presents as the unserious twin, a thrice-divorced socialite whose job is ‘vaguely PR.’ But make no mistake, a master manipulator lies underneath Maddie’s frivolous façade.”
Matthews will play Teddy Lockwood, described as the “snarky yet loyal brother-in-law of Joe Goldberg.

A year and a half on from the project’s announcement, the valet-centric Ferris Bueller spin-off flick now has a director, but its script still isn’t finalised, according to reports.
It was all the way back in August of 2022 that we heard that the iconic 1986 comedy, Ferris Bueller’s Day Off, would be getting a spin-off movie. Apparently, the film is set to ‘follow the two valets who took Cameron’s father’s cherry red Ferrari on a joy ride through Chicago and had their own adventure on that fateful day back in 1986.’ If you watched Ferris Bueller’s Day Off then you know exactly what we’re talking about.
If you’ve never watched Ferris Bueller’s Day Off, then why are you here reading this when you could be watching Ferris Bueller’s Day Off for the first time?

Ted Lasso went out on a high note at Apple TV+.
According to Nielsen, the series was the most-watched streaming original last year, despite the fact that Apple TV+ has the fewest subscribers among the streamers that saw their content ranked in Nielsen’s streaming Top 10.
Apple’s small footprint didn’t keep the Jason Sudeikis-fronted series from putting up 16.9B minutes across all 24 episodes in 2023. That’s 2.5B more than second place, which went to Netflix’s The Night Agent. In fact, Netflix claimed most of the ten most-streamed originals last year, only giving away two more spots — one to Prime Video for Jack Ryan and another to Disney+ for The Mandalorian.
Ted Lasso snuck to No. 1 with consistently strong, though not eye-catching weekly totals, only ever surpassing 1B minutes once, after the Season 3 finale debuted.

And just like that, "Sex and the City" is being licensed to Netflix by Warner Bros. Discovery, parent company of HBO and the owner of its own streaming service, Max. The ground-breaking series about 30-something single women struggling to find love and happiness in '90s New York is finally making its way to the streaming platform that started it all in early April of 2024.
The licensing deal includes all six seasons of the series, but it does not include the two feature films or the spin-off series "And Just Like That..." which streams exclusively on Max. The original show will stream on Netflix only in the U.S. and several European countries, per Variety. "Sex and the City" originally aired from 1998-2004, starring Sarah Jessica Parker, Cynthia Nixon, Kristin Davis, and Kim Cattrall. Licensing is what allowed Netflix to grow into the largest streaming service in the world, and the company is looking to invest heavily in it again.
Netflix built its throne as the largest streaming service in the world primarily on its reputation of being the central hub where you could find all of the TV shows and movies that you could ever hope to watch. However, as the service grew and became an increasingly powerful player in the entertainment world, fewer and fewer competing media companies were willing to part with their content as they were afraid that it would only increase Netflix’s dominance in the burgeoning streaming space. However, now that streaming has settled into an era where growth is important, but no longer the primary measure of success, an increasing number of studios have been willing to return to or increase their licensing deals with Netflix.

And just like that, one of HBO’s most iconic hits is heading over to its biggest streaming rival.
All six seasons of the Emmy-winning comedy Sex and the City are going to stream on Netflix for the first time. The show will reportedly be added to the platform in April as a co-exclusive with Max (so Satc will still be available on HBO’s streaming service as well).
The licensing deal is part of a content agreement that HBO parent company Warner Bros. Discovery made with Netflix last July, but Satc was not originally announced as part of that package.
While Netflix is getting all 94 episodes of the original show — which launched in 1998 and starred Sarah Jessica Parker, Kristin Davis, Cynthia Nixon and Kim Cattrall as four friends in New York City — the streamer is not getting the Sex and the City movies or its current sequel series, And Just Like That (at least,...

Carrie Bradshaw and the rest of the “Sex and the City” coterie are heading to a binge-watching date on Netflix.
Netflix has inked a deal with Warner Bros. Discovery to license all six seasons of the popular HBO dramedy, comprising all 94 episodes, Variety confirmed. “Sex and the City” will land on Netflix in early April 2024.
The deal is not worldwide: The series will be available in the U.S. and several other European markets, sources familiar with the pact said. In addition, the deal does not include the two “Satc” feature-length films, nor does it include the recent spin-off “And Just Like That,” which is currently streaming only on Wbd’s Max.
In “Sex and the City,” which originally aired on HBO from 1998-2004, Sarah Jessica Parker stars as Bradshaw, a New York writer who “finds inspiration for her column from the genuine, emotional and often humorous exploits of her friends and lovers.

Updated: And just like that, Netflix is close to tying up another major content licensing deal.
Netflix will start streaming Sex and the City as early as April after reaching an agreement with Warner Bros. Discovery, Deadline has confirmed.
A deal for Sex and the City would be a major coup for Netflix. It is one of HBO’s most important library titles and has a modern spinoff series in the shape of And Just Like That… The latter is set to remain exclusive to Max.
For Netflix, these licensing deals can unlock old titles to many millions of its members, as was seen with Suits, which became the hottest show of last summer. For Warner Bros. Discovery, licensing is increasingly seen as a way of sweating its assets as Netflix cements its dominance in the streaming game.

Netflix has had a big twelve months when it comes to licensed content.
Deadline revealed in June that Warner Bros. Discovery struck a deal to license a number of titles including Insecure, Ballers and Six Feet Under and in December it inked a wide-ranging deal with Disney that sent titles including Lost, This Is Us and How I Met Your Mother to Netflix in example for securing Grey’s Anatomy on the Disney-owned platforms.
This comes after the hottest show of the summer was Suits, a legal drama that started in 2011, thanks to appearing on Netflix, prompting a new spinoff, as revealed by Deadline.
Now, Netflix Co-CEO Ted Sarandos wants more.
“I believe because of our our distribution heft and our recommendation system that sometimes we can uniquely add more value to the studio’s IP than they can. Not all the time, but sometimes it does, and we are the best buyer for it,...

As we head into Oscar balloting on Thursday, let’s not forget about Chloe Domont’s Fair Play which reawakened the erotic thriller, and specifically spoke to the Me-Too era. The MRC and T-Street production went into Sundance last year under the radar and became the fest’s first big deal with Netflix scooping up the Alden Ehrenreich and Phoebe Dynevor movie for $20M.
The movie further propelled Domont from being a working TV episodic director on shows such as Billions, Ballers and Star Trek Discovery, to auteur status with this original screenplay she had been “compounding for years.”
You can listen to our Crew Call interview:
Fair Play tells the story about a promising, young, very successful couple, who are engaged to marry — except they work at the same Wall Street hedge fund. She winds up getting a promotion over him, which leaves the man spiraling as his fiancée...

The November streaming slump finally ended during the week of Thanksgiving, as audiences in the U.S. had some extra time to catch up on film and TV.
There were three titles with over 1B minutes viewed from November 20 to 26, as well as two with over 900M. In first place was the Adam Sandler animated Netflix film Leo, which racked up 1.5B minutes viewed and also dominated Netflix’s Top 10 as the streamer’s biggest animated film debut ever.
Squid Game: The Challenge was in second place with 1.4B minutes viewed. Despite all the critiques about the Netflix reality competition series missing the point of its scripted predecessor, audiences’ interests were clearly piqued.

The revival of Warrior at Max turned out to be short-lived: The Warner Bros. Discovery streamer has canceled the show after its first season as a Max original and third overall.
That said, the series — based on writings by Bruce Lee and set in 19th century San Francisco — will potentially get in front of more viewers beginning in February 2024 as all three seasons will stream on Netflix. Warrior will continue to be available on Max as well, similar to other non-exclusive streaming licensing deals Wbd has made with Netflix for HBO shows like Six Feet Under, Band of Brothers and Ballers.

After a decorated career in television, The Family Plan director Simon Cellan Jones has returned to feature films for the first time in two-plus decades.

Four of the aforementioned shows were executive produced by Mark Wahlberg, and when the actor needed a filmmaker to direct March 2024’s Arthur the King during the pandemic, he gave Cellan Jones a second go-round in the feature space. Since it first started distributing movies and shows over the internet in 2007, Netflix has enjoyed an enormous head start over its competitors. Rival entertainment companies got sucked into an all-out arms race in 2019 and 2020 as the pandemic closed theaters and people around the globe kicked back in front of their streaming devices. But as entertainment companies struggle mightily to make their streamers profitable, they’re turning to their old rival for help. And now, Disney is letting Netflix stream some of its shows. With this retreat, Netflix now looks invincible over the long haul.
In a 2022 interview, then-former Disney CEO Bob Iger spoke of how he felt when he realized how his company’s content was making Netflix rich. “I woke up one day (in 2015) and thought we’re basically selling nuclear weapons technology to a third-world country, and now they’re using it against us,” Iger said. “So we...

What part of writing do writers actually enjoy? The answers from the six panelists on the 2023 THR Writer Roundtable — Fair Play’s Chloe Domont, All of Us Strangers’ Andrew Haigh, American Fiction’s Cord Jefferson, Poor Things’ Tony McNamara, Killers of the Flower Moon’s Eric Roth and Past Lives’ Celine Song — run the gamut from “everything” to “none of it.”
The answer to that question is not the only thing that differentiates the participants. Three were born in America, while one hails from South Korea (Song), another from Australia (McNamara) and still another from England (Haigh). One has been writing screenplays for more than a half-century (Roth), while three had never written a script that was turned into a film (Domont, Jefferson and Song). Two of their 2023 films were original (Domont and Song), while four were adapted from books (Haigh, Jefferson, McNamara and Roth). And two handed their scripts...

Endeavor CEO Ari Emanuel expressed hope Wednesday that “the strike ends in the next couple days,” referring to the SAG-AFTRA impasse still paralyzing Hollywood.
Even after the expected end to the historic dual walkouts by SAG-AFTRA and WGA, he said during the company’s third-quarter earnings call, many productions would need time to regroup and get back up and running. The early part of 2024 the likely window when shooting would fully resume, Emanuel said, with the process of scheduling actors creating a frenzy in the final weeks of 2023.
“There’s tons of pent-up demand, lots of stuff on the runway,” Emanuel said.
CFO Jason Lublin estimated the Hollywood strikes had a negative impact of $40 million-$50 million in the third quarter. His assessment came after the WME parent reported mixed third-quarter results, with sports gains lifting revenue but the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes hampering the company’s Representation unit.
