Wasn't expecting that.
W011y4m51 April 2023
Warning: Spoilers
A surprisingly strong blockbuster - surpassing my initial low expectations (I'm not even slightly a gamer, don't know the source material & am well aware adaptations usually tend to falter when put to the big screen) - so despite my inability to comment on accuracy when translating ideas from one format to another, I am genuinely impressed by the strength of "Dungeons & Dragons" (in terms of judging the piece solely as a movie, in & of itself), from first impressions.

Although far from being a masterpiece, the fantasy film doesn't necessarily have to be in order for it to be an entertaining watch (or valid, as "Honour Amongst Thieves" isn't trying to be profound - quite the opposite; revelling in the fact that it never takes the story too seriously - resulting in some honestly amusing moments that triggered audible laughter from the audience, repeatedly) & there are a plethora of attributes to appreciate; the genuinely funny, self referential humour, sharp wit, continuous narrative pay-offs, effective utilisations of practical FX throughout (blended amongst VFX for maximum impact) & ingeniously inventive magical sequences (of pure cinematic spectacle) that advance the plot brilliantly & enhance fight scenes - in ways no previous filmmakers have seemingly ever thought to try before (despite the existence of numerous / similar brands like "Harry Potter", "Doctor Strange" etc. The wizardry here is actually uniquely realised & visually original) & therefore, I seriously recommend seeing the release at the cinema - since it's well worth your time.

A tremendous addition to the fantasy genre
kevin_robbins31 March 2023
Warning: Spoilers
Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves (2023) is a movie my wife and I watched in theatres this evening. The storyline follows a father who is left to raise his new born daughter on his own after his wife is killed due to his mischievous ways. He meets an outcast, Holga, they become best friends, and they raise the baby together. When they set out on a mission to find a magic stone to bring the mother back to life, they are caught, imprisoned and the daughter is taken by a friend to raise her. The father and Holga will need to find a way out of jail, track down the daughter and restart their life...

This movie is codirected by John Francis Daley and Jonathan Goldstein, who worked together on Game Night, and stars Chris Pine (Wonder Woman), Michelle Rodriguez (The Fast and the Furious), Regé-Jean Page (Bridgerton), Hugh Grant (Four Wedding and a Funeral) and Daisy Head (Wrong Turn).

We loved this movie. This reminded me of Guardians of the Galaxy in a lot of ways. There is a lot going on in this movie - but I adored both the good guys and bad guys. The three villains in this are tremendous and Hugh Grant was perfectly cast for this role. His facial expressions and body langauge was hilarious. The same could be said about Chris Pine, who was perfect as the lead character. The action choreography is out of this world. Every fight scene is tremendous. The CGI used for the magic and creatures was excellent and they did a great job of creating the universe with various creatures and species throughout the movie. The storyline has more depth than you may expect and the final fight was a 10/10. There's even some great jump scares in here you don't see coming.

Overall, this is a tremendous addition to the fantasy genre that's an absolute must see. I would score this an 8/10 and strongly recommend (my wife gave it a 9/10).

An Utter, Delightful Surprise.
The_Coffee_Frog4 June 2023
My 'Dungeons and Dragons' knowledge isn't very vast, but I have always really liked the idea of it, despite never playing the game, so, I decided to see 'Honour Among Thieves' on a somewhat of a whim, I felt like going to the cinema, this was playing, I heard good things, so, I thought why not.

This film was an utter surprise, my expectations were rock bottom, I thought it would be passable at best, but, instead I got one of the best blockbusters I have seen in years.

The film follows a thief called Edgin, played by Chris Pine, as he gather a crew to rescue an old artefact.

In a landscape dominated by some of the most abysmal of blockbusters, 'Honour Among Thieves', stands out as, while nothing exceptional, it showcases a level of filmmaking quality usually absent in these types of blockbusters, especially in DC and Marvel's recent efforts. There feels like there is genuine passion here, an effort to make something visually distinctive, it actually feels like a filmmaker's vision.

The script, while riddled with clichés and some pacing issues, is surprisingly tight, and most importantly: funny and engaging. This film has several great laughs, but more surprisingly some genuinely impactful emotional beats, which the comedy never intrudes upon. Its characters are all distinct and memorable, they don't feel like cardboard cutouts of film protagonists.

The cast are also great, and have great chemistry, Chris Pine in particular surprised me with his fun and charismatic performance.

In short, 'Honour Among Thieves' is by no means perfect but it is a throughly refreshing and fun blockbuster that felt lost to time, I would recommend to D&D fans and non-fans alike, it's a real winner that I would love to watch a sequel to.

Is to LORD OF THE RINGS what SHREK is to Disney Princess Films
PartTimeCritic12 July 2023
I heard some rumblings that this one might be better than it's early year release date and it has easily become my first real surprise viewing of the year and I think it deserves to be ranked amongst some of the best fantasy films in the genre. Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves is a fantasy film with a journey/heist at its center that takes a likable group of thieves (really just misunderstood heroes) through imaginative locations, encountering creative characters/creatures, and giving us some memorable action set pieces with castle chases and even pudgy dragon fights. Calling it a Guardians of the Galaxy for the fantasy genre is a bit simplistic, but it's also not that far off. Another way to put it would be that this is to Lord of the Rings what Shrek was to Disney Princess films. The director/writers here were the writers from 2018's Game Night so that might help give you a clue as to the layered humor to expect and also hope for a juicy Jesse Plemons role in a future sequel.

Three things make this fantasy-action-comedy stand out to me. First, it's just a fun story to watch filled with actors who genuinely feel like they are enjoying their roles. Chris Pine gives a charismatic lead performance here that brings a lot of comedy and still finds some strong dramatic notes. Pine plays the character a bit like if Jason Bateman had been cast as Star Lord in Guardians of the Galaxy instead of Chris Pratt. There's a moment Chris Pine breaks into a song and it's not just played for laughs - it's meant to be for levity and it really works. Hugh Grant, like in Paddington, gets to sink himself into another smarmy villainous role and there's even a delightful little surprise cameo that had me rolling. Second, the film is bursting with creative imagination and features plenty of practical effects to pull it off. There's lots of real-life locations, practical builds, and costumes mixed in with stages/CGI to ground the film. Also, you never feel like they over rely on magic just for the sake of getting some CGI moment into the trailer. Finally, the relatively simple stakes of the film, recapturing a lost family, are refreshing for such a big blockbuster. Sure, they backdoor a bit higher stakes during the overstuffed finale (some trimming and focus would have really helped to nail the landing here) but it's light and takes a backseat to the family stuff. On one hand, it's heartening to have only one entry here and just let this story and world be a one off. On the other hand, they've developed such likable characters and such an interesting and fun world that it would be a shame not to revisit it. If that's a problem, that's a pretty good one to have.

Wish I'd seen it in theater
vandykeu28 July 2023
D+D is what the adventure-comedy/fantasy genre needs to take notes from. In a world saturated by superhero films and remakes/retreads of old favorites, this was a breath of fresh air. It was fun, funny, and generally entertaining. The characters made sense, and the funny parts weren't focused on awkward or cringe situations that are totally unnatural, unlike most modern films.

The casting of Hugh Grant here is inspired. He's been doing some tremendous work in all of the films he's been in lately, and it is awesome to see him taken seriously as an actor beyond just his old rom/com days. He's good as a villain, and the rest of the story plays off of him very well here. Likewise, the main cast all does a great job playing both for and against type.

Admittedly, I don't know D+D lore, so I don't know how well this satisfies true fans, but I think it works well as a basic story/film. It reminds me a bit of Firefly/Serenity- a not too serious take on a well-worn genre that manages to do a lot more right than it does wrong.

For the most part, very entertaining
thrashingmad27 March 2023
I was lucky enough to catch a sneak preview of the Movie. I have played Dungeons and Dragons since the basic game came out in the late 70ies. So far, every adaptation I have seen trying to turn the D&D world into a movie has fallen flat on its face mostly because it was trying to appeal to way too many audiences and include way to much modern BS.

This movie was decent, It has a very adventurous feel and definitely played to both fans of the game and those who have never played the game. I like the fact that they didn't spoil the movie with any modern elements like the movies of the past had tried to do. It had a good story and great special effects. Is it the story I would have told? Nope but I don't have a $100,000,000 to make a movie and my movie would have catered more to the D&D world and player. It also most likely would have been a complete flop because it's a very small niche market! They don't call this the "movie business" for nothing and I understand that. Let's face it, we won't see another movie if it doesn't make money! I would definitely pay to see a series of this type of movie providing they stay on the same path they are on. The movie was far from perfect from a game player stance, but the movie has been the truest to the spirit of the game to date.

Game players will be divided on the movie's success but everyone else will most likely be entertained.

The SERIOUSLY 😝 Overweight SECOND Dragon Not Withstanding ...This Is A Very ! FUNNY AND NOVEL Picture... & One With Real Soul🌹, At That. Warning: Spoilers
A -{ B I G }- Screen Mini Review ; Viewed It -{ TWICE }-.

______________________________________________________

'Forge', To Chris Pine's 'Edgin' : "Ahhhh, I don't want to see you die."

P A U S E

Forge, { To Edgin, As Well As Sofina } : "And that's why, I'm leaving the room!".

______________________________________________________

Ok, so 'right off the bat': HUGH GRANT'S patently diabolical 'Forge', along with Daisy Head's 'Deliciously Evil Sofina', are absolutely, positively -{ BRILLIANT!!! }- . . . . & they drive the movie to a -huge- extent. And mind you, -every- single other 'Principal' { Chris Pine, Michelle Rodriguez, Regé-Jean Page, Justice Smith, Sophia Lillis, Chloe Coleman } delivers an impassioned Performance, that is -Not- far behind. Directors John Francis Daley & Jonathan Goldstein have helmed a STUPENDOUS production that is Un-equivocally . . . . "A True Labour Of Love".

A quick disclaimer though: I'm -Not- a decades long Dungeons & Dragons afficionado, in that I -Haven't- watched -Any- of the prior movies -Or- TV series ; -Nor- did I partake in the original role-playing 'Board Gaming Sensation' by Gary Gygax and Dave Arneson, first published in 1974. The sole reason I'm mentioning this ; is to let you know that I'm coming at this movie with a -{ COMPLETELY FRESH PERSPECTIVE }-. In other words, I came at it with a -Fully- open mind . . . And was Totally Blown Away ( "well, for the -Most- part, anyway" ).

So all things considered ...YES... as I -Just- alluded to above, I -Did- have a -Small- beef with the fact that in a picture calling itself something and "DRAGONS" ; it does feel like the film fell a TAD bit short on that rather obvious titular promise. Of the 3 Dragons shown in the -Entire- feature ; the 1st is 'Gone-before-you-know', the 2nd's 'Morbidly Obese', and the 3rd, { albeit fabulously realized for the big-screen in its truly -Resplendent- silver & gold adornments }, is ALSO a { relatively } brief presence, in the Grand Finale sequence. But did that matter in the final analysis? Hell, No!!

SUMMARY : "Dungeons & Dragons : Honour Among Thieves" is, in a nutshell, "An -{ Absolute }- Riot" . . . Ergo : 13 Marks Out Of 10 From Me, Hands Down! Oh, & -Do- keep a special eye out for the scenes involving 'the red smoke and the Red Wizards' ; the colours employed are just -{ Intensely }- Vivid, & 'Bewitching'. It's Charming, Delightful, Suspenseful, Thrilling ; and, most-notably-of-all . . . I found the momentous buildup -TOWARDS- and ( eventual ) 'Huge' payoff -AT- the very end ; to be Tremendously, & Magically ( Pun -Entirely- Intended- ) . . . . -{ " SOULFUL & BEAUTIFUL " }-. And if -All- that wasn't already -Enough- ; IT'S DELIRIOUSLY FREAKING FUNNY 👏 🤣 🤣 . . . . ENJOY!!!

Fun And Entertaining
ericgoldberg-5015923 March 2023
Warning: Spoilers
This movie is well done overall. It has a good story and characters. It's a fun watch with plenty of action and magic. It's good to see Hugh Grant acting again. He does a good job playing the manipulative villain. The movie is well casted and the main team complement each other well. I have always loved fantasy and this is right up my alley. The special effects are excellent and make the movie come alive. I am also glad the movie isn't three and half hours like some others. The length is perfect. Chris Pine is funny and Michelle Rodriguez kicks butt and takes names. This movie has the magic I am looking for.

The Die Is Cast In Favor Of This Movie
rgkarim31 March 2023
Warning: Spoilers
LIKES:

The Pace -The movie is not one of those that gets lost in the set up and meandering to get the character's introduced to help with controls.

-No, it instead picks up and gets things going right off the bat, as we get right into a heist and the adventure at hand.

-That adventurous pace works so hard for me, and it keeps that momentum going, a fantastic movement that feels like a compact adventure that is not devoid of sustenance.

-And maintaining that pace... it's hard, but Daley and the crew really achieved this goal for me and may have the best paced movie of the month for me.

The Visual Effects -And the visual effects have surprisingly really gotten scaled up in the decades since that first attempt.

-The costumes are stellar, homages to impressive cosplay and design that I just love to see made homage in the films and the fans that made the series what it is.

-While not LOTR, the movie really does have great character creations and I quite enjoyed seeing the engagement depending on the character's status.

-the CGI work is great, while not fully realistic or smooth, it does a hell of job bringing everything to life and making the fictitious world as lifelike as possible.

-Dragons, spells, and the non-human denizens, have fantastic design and animation, and I just love the investment in giving it familiarity but adding that touch of personality to make it belong to this movie. Such great details.

The Surprising Story -The movie is not the most original vision, and truth be told is very much hybrids of fantasy movies of the past.

-Yet, it blends so many things together that the cliché story really feels a tad fresh and just fun to enjoy and see what they pulled from the archives of this world.

-There is some heart to it definitely, an investment that might be as sincere as others, but still worked for me in the way they come together in this band of thieves.

-And yet, there is a lot of setting pieces for future installments that holds adventure, action, and potential stakes in the times to come. All with that dab of humor to help even things out.

The World Building -It's a movie that has to cater to both old and new fans potentially, and you know what... I feel it works.

-D&D veterans are going to know the map and intricacies more and find those easter eggs that you'll surely pick out with multiple viewings of this movie.

-New people though will get plenty of elements and a basic foundation without being too overwhelmed to remember every place on the map and how they connect.

-The way these creatures are built. Learning about the bad guys and cults, are all there to a simple level, but yet have enough bite to help make things stand out and give you that movie fell to it.

-I loved the introduction this movie serves and not getting lost in it that the movie lost momentum and just feel this movie did it right to always intrigue you to come back for more in this universe.

-Plus, the visuals just make it pretty and the editing only further helps with keeping the world building exciting to see what comes next.

The Action -The movie surprised me by how good the action was and not dropped into that pseudo action, comedy stuff that we get in these movies.

-But yet, this movie really surprised me by the things they did and the adventurous action that was contained in the movie.

-Sword fighting choreography might be a bit planned, but the flow is incredible and still containing savagery and risks that give it heat and energy with a little mixed martial arts into the choreography.

-Magic battles feel like advanced Harry Potter moves, where actual elements and advanced level castings blow the light show of the series away, but again has this element of edge that works.

-And even the survivalist running holds some merit to it, and I loved how it mixed with the other elements to give every exciting moment some splendor.

-So much, that I wanted more action to help give just a little more splendor and complete feeling to some of the built moments.

The Fun -The movie is indeed just that... fun.

-The humor shows how much fun the movie has with itself, ribbing, lighthearted, and lightening up a rather darker story that works to keep in theme with the energy of D&D.

-And yet, the movie often does not get so lost in that humor that it loses the fantasy/adventure element, nor the emotional spectrum the movie is covering.

-Together, the movie just really works for me in just how much I enjoyed it, and though not perfect, nor a mimic to everything about the world, it's a good shot of incorporating so much into one genre.

DISLIKES:

Cut Some Corners On The Story -I'll admit, my knowledge of the full lore is still in the works, but movie wise, there are noticeable cuts to the story.

-Predictability serves it well in that these simple explanations and clips help give you enough to piece together, but LOTR still shows the ideal balance of story and action delivery in my opinion.

-Still, it's not bad given everything else this movie contains.

More Of the Arena: -There is an arena in this movie and that's all I'll say, though you have seen some glimpses of it in the trailer.

-It's a decent part and time commitment, but something was missing for me that needed just a tad more oomph to maximize.

-Something about it needed this finish and a little more time to give a few more eventful moments that would have culminated in getting the full buildup of these games.

-Still, they did not skimp too much on it, and the gradual part it serves in the grand plan, really does work for me.

A Little Forced On Humor/Mid-Credit Scene -Some jokes did not work for me like others, mostly the ones I've been bombarded with in the marketing for this movie.

-Some were a tad used too long, and others were just too forced for me to be funny, but again few and far between in the grand scheme of things.

-The balance really helps keep most of the jokes funny, and the writing is mostly well crafted to fit into the film instead of being shoved in.

THE VERDICT: Wow... this movie proved to be much better and exemplifies how games turned movies can work with the right focus, attention to detail, and respect to the franchise. Honor Among Thieves is certainly one of the biggest surprises for me in just how much fun and how good the film is in the grand scheme of things. It's got this heart that just is one part comedy and one part adventure, in a world that holds so much lore and cultural icons. And for me... it just works to be one of the most balanced movies I've seen in a while. The visuals are there without robbing the story of the majesty of it, and the special effects look great and add this level of immersion. Fantastic world building with lore building, but yet not too stuffy in terms of delivery accomplishes so much in such a little time. And the action reads the moment and is diverse, but often does not feel cheap or an afterthought, making it really feel like a tabletop game loaded with exciting scenarios. This film sets up a great world to go play in, and I can't say I would mind another go into the world, whether with this band or some other group in the near future. Either way, this film is one of my recommendations for watching and preferably in theaters. It's a quest worth taking.

My scores are:

Action/Adventure/Fantasy: 9.0 Movie Overall: 8.5-9.0.

Fun & entertaining
georgewhittingham131 March 2023
Never played dungeons and dragons (though I've always really wanted to!) but without knowing anything about the source material, this was pretty good!

Very entertaining overall, great pacing, some laugh out loud moments, a few great characters. That's not to say it's perfect though, some of the laughs fall short, and my biggest criticism would be the lack of world building and character development.

Saying that though, it's a great Friday night movie. You really don't have to think too hard about this one, just sit back, be entertained, and enjoy the laughs and magic. Fun, but not fantastic.

Excellent D&D Adaptation
stevenhess-4359620 March 2023
Saw the sneak preview today with my wife. I'm a 43-year veteran player and DM, and she's never played. She laughed through the whole thing and was riveted by the action sequences, indicating that this is an excellent intro to the world of D&D for the inexperienced. I was enchanted by what they got right: the iconic monsters, the banter, the feeling of an organic adventuring party coming together combining their strengths.

Best of all, having lived in Neverwinter since 6/7/13 and the MMO's open beta, I got to see the Jewel of the Sword Coast North in all its glory.

I'll be bringing my 4H D&D club to see it as soon as possible, and we'll definitely be seeing it again on our own.

Should have been a TV series
matrobe20 December 2023
I really, really, wanted this to be good, and while it wasn't terrible, it didn't deliver in the way that I think many had hoped it would. It may be a fairly controversial opinion but I loved the first D&D movie that was ever made, at least the first half of it, and I wanted this to fall in that same vein of movie. While the movie stuck to the fantasy, action, comedy genre I never felt like the jokes hit hard enough for me to really enjoy the film.

While I was impressed with the amount of actual D&D mechanics they threw into the film, I think it made it a little harder to really follow the story. The biggest issue that I had with the film was that it seemed to have to much detail crammed into to short of a time frame. The story seemed to suffer as a result of not having enough time to truly develop any character arc or relationship; the movie relied on every classic trope it could use to fill the gaps in a very rushed setting. The end result of it left me with the feeling that it was like a game of D&D, but not in a good way; the characters seemed to just be thrown together, the story seemed jumpy and rushed, the big bad was hokey and anticlimactic, and it failed to convey the fantasy setting it should have.

Reviews make no sense
45clicksnorth9 April 2023
I am so surprised by the reviews here that I decided to sign up. The reviews suggest this is a fabulous movie. Now, I am glad people enjoyed it and found it entertaining but come on people a movie has to have a bit of something more about it than this. I went with my wife and 13 year old daughter. We were all excited having done a quick check of the rating on IMDb. We all thought the movie was a massive flop. I've read a few reviews here which compare the movie to Guardians of the Galaxy! It's got none of wit, humour, dialogue or interesting characters of that movie and I just cannot see what others obviously have. Someone even referenced LOTR! I get that people enjoy fantasy blockbusters on the big screen but this is so clearly a money grab with absolutely no original ideas and I would save yourself the money and more importantly the time. D&D deserves better than this.

It was alright...
missjanebrown14 October 2023
It was fine. It wasn't great. It wasn't as funny as it could have been. The trailer had me really excited to see it, but it wasn't as good as the trailer had me expecting. It had some good moments, and some fun fight chorography, but it's not going to stick in my head as a film I want to come back to. The structure of it feels slightly chaotic. None of the characters are particularly deeply explored. There are strong female roles which I enjoyed. All the characters are contextualized by their romantic interests either past or future, as well as by their primary skill that they contribute to the group. So it's nothing sophisticated - it's not meant to be - but for me it fell short of being as entertaining as it hoped to be.

A nonstop adventure full of epic fantasy, hilarious jokes and heart
giorgosstefanidis24 March 2023
Warning: Spoilers
So glad that this ended up being as good as I expected it . From start to finish , this movie is full of adventure and never loses its steam . The comedy is a straight 10/10 and I can say I am not the only one as the whole audience died from laughing in some scenes . The worldbuilding as I completely newbie in the world of D&D , is absolutely SPECTACULAR . The visual effects most of the times was gorgeous . What surprised me the most tho is how freaking well it was shot and how beautiful the cinematography was . "D&D honor among thieves" is packed with wonderful characters and action and is easily one of the most entertaining movie I have ever seen and I can't wait for the hopefully next installment.

It brought me hope!
vitinhaoriginal27 February 2024
This film brought me a different kind of happiness.

It's no masterpiece, but it's good to see that the foundation of what defines the fantasy genre is still alive. The elements that make the genre unique, the details, narrative, interaction, visual and story.

It's undeniable how Peter Jackson changed fantasy forever and this film is greatly influenced by him, but it proves that there is still a horizon for fantasy, one that makes you want to be in the film, be one of the characters, see yourself in the events.

With the right team, it can be adapted several times in the future exploring other adventure narratives from the world of D&G, with a shorter duration and a charismatic cast, the work stands out despite following the action adventure formula, but this allows us to be surprised by the execution.

It brought me hope.

Man! I can't believe how good that movie was!
subxerogravity20 March 2023
Warning: Spoilers
So, I heard that the movie is nothing like the game. That means nothing to me because I never played the game so I'm unfamiliar. I can only judge the movie for what it is and what it is a Fabulous adventure.

Far as I'm concern Chris Pine made it to the mountain top of fame playing Captain Kirk in the Star Trek Reboot and he very, very much so feels like the captain of a very different Star ship in this movie. He's brought that energy to the role and was really getting into it.

Michell Rodriguez also embraces what made her famous in this role. She's just the tough warrior chick and her fighting scenes are fantastic.

Also, a fan of Justice Smith who plays a Wizard and Sophia Lillis who plays...A shape shifter of some sort.

Oh, and I have to give props to Hugh Grant. He just did Guy Richie's new flick, Operation Fortune and plays a similar comedic and charming villain. Not too much of a side step from his romantic lead past.

As a movie it follows greatly the Role-Playing Game formula when it comes the characters and they picked some good actors to play each character.

The story, or should I say Adventure, was amazing. It was big and epic and there was a lot too it without being long winded. Technically, like a game they went on missions that leveled up as they progressed.

I never played the game so I cannot prepare and tell you its true to the game. I can only tell you this movie was so much fun and that's important to have fun in the movie theater.

This movie was gold, of course it didn't get promoted...
bobby-jack-bj20 August 2023
I didn't expect much, as I know nothing about the Dungeons and Dragons role-playing universe. The trailer was nice, so I thought I'd give the movie a chance, and it turned out to be one of the best films of the year! Everything is well-done - the actors, the story, the action, the twists, the universe, absolutely everything! And of course, for once a good original film comes out, there's no promotion, at least not in France... I read that the film is a box office failure, and it's all the producers' fault for completely missing what could have been a very profitable franchise...

Don't hesitate, go watch this movie, you won't regret it.

Not bad, but not great...
rdamian19635 April 2023
Warning: Spoilers
By far this is the best D&D movie to date, however it still misses the mark. The movie is well acted. It has a solid story line and a decent script. It is a bit over the top in its whimsical approach. This doesn't make it a bad movie, but given the cast and integrity to the game, it had the potential to be a bit more of an epic fantasy. The movie is fun and entertaining and is worth watching, even on the big screen. There is adequate back story development for most of the main characters, giving depth and allowing further character development. I am looking to further movies and series based on the game...

If I had told you today that the latest D&D motion picture was destined to become an epic fantasy classic, you might not believe me at first..among other skeptics whether in or separate from the D&D community.

I had already predetermined it going to be a much bigger production than their prior offerings, which to be pretty fair, spiraled off course and plummeted into the deep seas(perhaps devoured by Morkoth...) and based on the catchy previews I glossed over added to what I felt overall when walking into an early screening this weekend with a few friends from our current campaign. They were probably just as skeptical as I was, until right into the first five minutes of film, which is when I then knew that they had made something real special.

Brim-filled with visually stunning epic fantasy action, funny and irreverent, yet full of heart, this avoids the scheme of trying to be too cool for its own good. It embraces D&D's sometimes ridiculousness in a setting that is self-aware, and presents a story sensibly. Even in its hundred and thirty-four minute runtime, it gets the point across without cutting corners or dragging anything too long. I'm quite relieved they didn't rush anything, as it is done too often in feature films nowadays.

The party consists of three-dimensional characters that are complex, and exclusive in their own way, empowered by a wonderful cast(even the villains and some side-characters, who I shall leave unnamed for the sake of no-spoilers).

This further reminds me why we go to the cinema. It's things like this that are so refreshing and bold, yet keeping it's bright tone within it's boundaries without going to much into the extreme. This is D&D, and I'm certain longtime fans and newcomers alike will find Honor Among Thieves in all of us.

Good, fun, but misses some important details.
hootihoo24 June 2023
As an old D&D player since the 1st Edition, I liked that the movie brought alot of my favorite RPG to life. It was fun, witty, and worthy of the spirit of the game. However, some key elements were left out. The Bard, played by Chris Pine, had zero abilities, other than singing and being a sad, washed-up loser trying to rebuild his life, when Bards can add many benefits to a party's success. The Tiefling looks nothing like the racial class in the game description, and she really adds minimal contributions to the quest. Michelle Rodriguez was phenomenal as the female barbarian fighter, and her fight scenes were top notch. I didn't see any real purpose for the Paladin other than some comic relief, although he was well played. Finally, I think the whole "diversity" thing was overdone. I'm not opposed to diverse casting, but it looks like great effort was spent in getting as close to a 50/50 ratio as possible, which in my opinion is silly. If you want to go that far, Asians are noticeably absent. Maybe we should just keep the game multiracial and let various actors play those races as the are portrayed in the game?

Far Exceeded My Expectations!!
caspercapsicum24 April 2023
I went to watch this a few days ago with no prior knowledge of anything about D&D. I didn't even watch the trailer. It was extremely funny, I was laughing all through it. It was very silly, but it held itself together very well, similar to Thor Ragnarok. I can imagine that serious D&D players might not enjoy that aspect, though I'm not sure how serious the game gets, all I know is that it is meant to last ages. Cris Pine was great, Hugh Grant was fantastic, and everyone else was also super funny. The plot wasn't super original or anything, but I would recommend this to anyone, and I already have to about twenty people. It is well worth the money as it is a great action/adventure/fantasy/comedy. A bit of a cross between Indiana Jones, Lord of the rings and The Princess Bride. I was laughing out load for at least twenty minutes throughout. So go watch it. Definitely.

Fun movie. Would rewatch.

Warning: Spoilers
Overall very enjoyable movie. I'm not into DnD myself, but I imagine DnD players will like it. It did feel way more DnD'esque than that vanilla and boring 2000 flick. I think the core difference is in that this movie doesn't take itself seriously. It also feels more like an actual DnD campaign with random and bonkers stuff happening.

The main criticism this movie will receive is probably the characters. Holga and Doric are introduced as being capable and strong from the get-go. Meanwhile, Edgin and Simon are mostly incompetent and have to overcome their problems and grow as characters to be of actual help. Somewhat more emotionally for Edgin and overcoming low self-esteem for Simon. But, it's not that much of an issue. Not all men are emasculated or evil. For example, Xenk is an absolute war machine. And for Edgin and Simon it's part of their character development. Which makes them that much more likeable as characters.

Overrated
matthewdickson-1418021 April 2023
Despite its rich source material and an enthusiastic cast, the film falls flat in its execution, succumbing to a string of cliches and predictable story beats that leave audiences feeling underwhelmed.

The film's narrative structure is a textbook example of the "team of heroes" trope, complete with characters who possess specific skill sets needed to overcome various obstacles. However, the film's reliance on such a formulaic approach results in a sense of déjà vu for viewers who are familiar with fantasy adventures. To its detriment, the film fails to deviate from or subvert the expected conventions, leading to a predictable and lackluster experience.

The filmmakers' affection for the source material is apparent, but it doesn't translate into a well-crafted movie. The film's visual design lacks creativity, with Forge's city resembling a generic fantasy video game setting. The film's use of CGI is at times jarring, with magic-driven sequences feeling detached from the more grounded practical effects. The world-building falls short, and the film misses the opportunity to create immersive and visually captivating environments.

While the cast delivers competent performances, their efforts are hindered by the film's shortcomings. Pine's rough charisma, Rodriguez's physicality, and Grant's smarminess are all on display, but they are not enough to elevate the material. The film suffers from a lack of substance, and despite its lengthy runtime of 139 minutes, it feels devoid of depth and genuine emotion. The characters are constantly moving from one plan to the next, but the repetitive structure leaves little room for meaningful development or stakes.

A Fun Ride!
pakeeyaraj2 May 2023
Finally watched after it came out digitally. Never played the game myself , the film succeeds to entertain even the common audience.

Like the recent Shazam: Fury of Gods, the film does not take it self too seriously and explorers the new world and characters well enough to make you wanting more.

Would not mind a sequel, especially at this time when superheroes movies have started underwhelming audiences.

All actors bring their A-game and are very like-able. Actions are enjoyable . Plot is breezy albeit predictable but injects just enough amount of fun for it to be worthwhile watch! Join in for the ride.
